Measures of germination and seedling survival for Prosartes lanuginosa, Maianthemum racemosa, and Melampyrum lineareae in the French Broad Watershed, 2009-2011
We asked how performance and population dynamics of the temperate forest herb Prosartes lanuginosa differed between recently logged (20-40 years ago) and old (>90 years) logged forests in the Southern Appalachians, USA. We conducted a seed sowing experiment to determine whether germination and establishment differed with stand age. Germination and performance of individual seedlings was monitored over three years across 20 forest stands.
Weather Measurements from the metro area of Franklin, NC
This data set contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, and rainfall from sites located throughout the metro area of Franklin, North Carolina. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation are measured every 60 seconds with average, minimum, maximum, and discrete top of the hour values saved to the output data hourly. Wind direction is measured every 60 seconds with the average value saved to the output data table every hour. Hourly rainfall is totalized and a continuous 24 hour rainfall value is calculated. Calculations for evapotranspiration, dew point, heat index, wind chill, and wind vector are calculated hourly and saved to the output data table.

This project evaluates the damage and changes ice storms cause to northern hardwood forests in nutrient cycling. Ten 20x30 meter plots were established in a predominately sugar maple stand, with 4 icing treatments and 2 control plots. This data set includes gross ammonification, gross ammonium consumption, gross nitrification, and gross nitrate consumption monitored in the Ice Storm Experiment plots at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest from 2015-2017.

As the climate changes, it is thought that ice storms will begin to occur with increasing frequency. This project evaluates the damage and changes ice storms cause to northern hardwood forests in nutrient cycling. Ten 20x30 meter plots were established in a predominately sugar maple stand, with 4 icing treatments and 2 control plots. This data set includes soil nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations, microbial biomass carbon (C ) and nitrogen (N) content, microbial respiration, potential nitrification and N mineralization rates determined via lab incubation and in situ field incubations, denitrification potential, and organic matter content monitored in the Ice Storm Experiment plots at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest from 2015-2017.
Ice thickness measurements from the Ice Storm Experiment (ISE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
An ice storm simulation was performed at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to evaluate impacts of these extreme weather events on northern hardwood forests. Water was pumped from the main branch of Hubbard Brook and sprayed above the forest canopy in subfreezing conditions so that it rained down and froze on contact with trees. The experiment consisted of five treatments, including a control (no ice) and three target levels of radial ice accretion: low (6.4 mm), mid (12.7 mm), and high (19.0 mm). Two of the mid-level treatment plots (midx2) were iced in back-to-back years to evaluate impacts of consecutive storms. The ice accretion values reported are measurements made on passive collectors using both digital calipers and a water volume approach. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (USDA Forest Service): Soil Temperature Measurements, 1959 - 1998
Soil temperature data were collected approximately weekly at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest from 1959 - 1998. Colman temperature-moisture sensors were installed at one location west of weir 4 and replicated (1 and 2) at depths of 3, 8, 15, 30, 46 and 61 cm. Soil resistance was recorded using a manually-operated AC resistance meter then converted to temperature. In 1998 the battery needed to operate the meter to read the sensors was no longer available. No soil temperature data were collected from the last Colman reading in 1998 until the start of a new network collocated with the Colman plots. Two sets of hydroprobes run from a SCAN site (Soil Climate and Analysis Network operated by the NRCS) were placed at the original depths and as close as possible to the original location. Hubbard Brook SCAN data are now available at the NRCS SCAN website from 2002 – present and serve to extend the soil temperature dataset first initiated in 1959 in to the future. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER: Dissolved oxygen measurements in supraglacial streams on Canada Glacier, Antarctica, January 2019
We installed dissolved oxygen sensors in three locations on a supraglacial stream network on Canada Glacier in Taylor Valley, Antarctica in conjunction with a series of nutrient tracer injection experiments. This data collection was intended to provide context for respiration and primary productivity via dissolved oxygen dynamics during our nutrient tracer injections. Sensors were deployed a day before the start of the tracer series and collected on the last day of experiments. Over the course of their deployment, two of the three locations had issues with freezing around the sensor and produced large artifacts (swings) in the data.Â
Weekly CTD profile measurements of conductivity, specific conductance, temperature, depth, density, and salinity from Lake Hoare, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica during the 2012-2013 austral summer
As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, we investigated relationships between wind conditions and barotropic seiches within Lake Hoare, located in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, during the 2012-2013 austral summer. Temporal changes in the water column were measured using a rugged, handheld, CastAway CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth probe, manufactured by SonTek), deployed through the Lake Hoare Limno Hole (note, this is a separate instrument from the SeaBird CTD used as part of the MCM LTER core limnological monitoring program). The CastAway CTD directly measures temperature, electrical conductivity, and pressure at 5 Hz as it free-falls through the water column at a rate of approximately 1 m s-1 on the downward cast and approximately 0.3 m s-1 on the upward cast. The device calculates salinity and density using the International Equation of State for Seawater, called EOS-80. This data package provides 27 profiles of depth, temperature, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, and density collected between November 25, 2012 and January 21, 2013. In general, three profiles were collected over a ten-minute-period every seven days for 57 days. Five profiles were collected prior to the arrival of spring melt, four profiles were collected during the arrival of spring melt on December 7, 2012, and 18 profiles were collected after the arrival of spring melt continuing into late summer.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, meteorological data was collected from various locations throughout Beacon, Taylor, Wright and Victoria Valleys. These files contain data for the Beacon Valley meteorology station. These data correspond to the Beacon met station. Beacon ceased operations in the 2012 season.

The Upper Howard Glacier meteorological station was added to the McMurdo Dry Valley network in the 2001-2002 field season in Taylor Valley and removed November 8, 2004.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, meteorological data was collected from various locations throughout Beacon, Taylor, Wright and Victoria Valleys. These files contain data for the Garwood Valley meteorology station. This station reported data for about a year, during 2011. On January 11, 2012 the station was disconnected and relocated to the Miers Valley. Met data for Garwood can be obtained visiting the Garwood Ice Cliff Met Station.
