SBC LTER: REEF: Allometric Measurements of Giant Kelp

These data describe the allometry of 55 giant kelp plants collected monthly from three kelp forests near Santa Barbara, CA from May 2002 to June 2003. Included are values for the length and mass of each frond, distinguishing material in the water column from that found at the surface. Data on stipe diameter, number of blade nodes and blade mass are also provided for a subset of fronds. These data were used by Rassweiler et al. (2018) to develop relationships predicting the mass of giant kelp found in the water column and canopy as a function of a few measurements taken from each plant.

Point-Quarter Harvested Plant Weight Measurements to Estimate Shrub ANPP in a Chihuahuan Desert Creosote Shrubland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2007- present)

In an effort to better quantify NPP of Creosotebush in the Five-Points region, it was decided to test the Point-Quarter method against the standard 1-m2 quadrat method that has been in use since 1998. Transects were laid out across the 5 mammal trapping webs as well as across burned and unburned plots of the Mixed Shrub site (MS). Repeat measures of the same bushes are performed seasonally. Whole shrubs of various size classes are collected and sorted and weighed to develop regressions for biomass.

Wave and turbidity measurements, Fowling Point, Hog Island Bay, VA, Summer 2016

Time series of turbidity, water surface elevation, wave height and period, current, and water temperature were measured at sites along a bay-to-marsh transect along the east-facing margin of Fowling Point, Hog Island Bay, VA in summer 2016. The measurements were made to characterize suspended sediment concentrations in the water inundating Fowling Point marsh during high tides and storms, as a proxy for the availability of sediment for wetland accretion. The time series includes a spring-neap cycle and a wind-driven resuspension event. The measurements were made to support marsh depositional modeling being carried out as part of an NSF-sponsored Coastal SEES research project.

The full ACFs are then calculated by running merge.m to combine the simulation results, gordeyev.m to calculate the electron Gordeyev integral, Ji_calc.m to calculate the ion Gordeyev integral, and finally isr_Jtoneb.m to calculate the spectra. The resulting spectra are included and labeled as &#39;neb_sp12_Te_Ti.mat&#39; for the different electron and ion temperatures. The Brownian spectra for the same parameters are labeled as &#39;neb440_Te_Ti.mat&#39;. The frequencies used in calculating the electron Gordeyev integrals may be needed for plotting and are labeled as &#39;wJe_12_Te_Ti.mat&#39;.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The data are labeled by the date, Nov_2013, Feb_2019, or Apr_2019. An appendix of &#39;avg&#39; indicates the file averaged the ACFs across multiple range gates. The measured ACFs are all labeled &#39;acf_pos?_date_avg_fitted.h5&#39;, where pos? refers to the antenna pointing direction. The pointing directions and associated parameters are located in &#39;looker?_date_avg.csv&#39;. The IRI model results for each experiment are in the files &#39;iri?_date_avg.m&#39;.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The spectra from PIC simulations are included as &#39;k*_T1150_N5e10_nz.mat&#39;, where * is an aspect angle index. The matching k* and aspect angles in degrees are {k4, 0.8}, {k6, 1.2}, {k11, 2}, {k15, 2.8}, {k20,&nbsp;3.6}, {k24, 4.4}, {k28, 5}, {k29, 5.2}, {k34, 6}, {ky, 0}, {kx, 90}. Ancient Conical Sundial Measurements

<p>**ConicalSundialsMeasurements.json** describes the dimensions of the corpus and cone of ancient conical sundials with 3D-models which are cataloged in the repository of the &nbsp;Berlin Ancient Sundials Project (http://repository.edition-topoi.org/collection/BSDP). The dimensions were measured from the 3D-models in that collection. &nbsp;Besides, the database lists distances and angles of construction points (i.e., the shortest distance between the cone apex and the day curves). They were relevant to validate the geographical location for which the sundial was crafted, and derived values for the ratio between gnomon size and shadow length &nbsp;(g,s).</p>
