Optimizing Forest Restoration: a holistic spatial approach to deliver Nature's Contributions to People with minimal trade-offs and maximal equity

<p>The datasets in this repository are the results of the study titled "Optimizing Forest Restoration: a holistic spatial approach to deliver Nature's Contributions to People (NCP) with minimal trade-offs and maximal equity". The study shows that forest restoration plans aimed at joint achievement of multiple NCP have minimal trade-offs between the NCP, optimize areas evenly across the potential restoration area considered and have maximal equity considering socioeconomically disadvantaged people in India, when compared to single NCP forest restoration plans. There are 3 NCP considered- climate change mitigation (MtC), biodiversity value NCP (number of forest depenend mamm species of 56 forest mammals considered, who restoration area target will be met)) and people NCP (number of people to whom livelihoods, energy and housing contruction material will be delivered). Single NCP forest restoration plans aim at only one of the three NCP considered at a time while the integrated plan is aimed at joint achievement of all three NCP. The peer-reviewed publication will be linked here after the peer-review process.&nbsp;<br><br>There are 5 datasets in this repository. The first titled opportunearea_10km_resample.tif is the potential forest restoration area considered in this study. The pixel values indicate the amount of potential forest restoration area within that pixel in sqm. The remaining 4 datasets are zipped files indicating each of the forest restoration plans considered. In each zipped file there are 100 raster files (.tif format). Each of the rasters provide the forest restoration area (first dataset) optimized for the respective type of forest restoration plan in 1% increments of the total potential restoration area. The naming format followed for each of these rasters is Y_NCPtype_optimality.tif, where Y is 1-100 and NCPType is either Biodiveristy, People, Carbon or Integrated. The pixel values in each of the rasters have a range of 0-1, where 0 means that restoration area (pixel) is not optimized for delivery of the respective NCP for that increment of total potential restoration area and 1 means the entire restoration area (pixel) has been optimized for delivery of the respective NCP. Proportional pixel values indicate that the respective proportion of the restoration area is optimal.&nbsp;<br><br>All rasters have pixel dimensions of 10 km x 10k (333, 325, 1 (nrow, ncol, nlyr)) with raster extent 7590450, 10840450, 902100, 4232100 (xmin, xmax, ymin, ymax) and WGS 1984 Psuedo Mercator (EPSG: 3857) coordinate reference system.</p>

Specialized and generalized non-material Nature's Contributions to People at Mount Kilimanjaro using Twitter posts.

<p>This dataset was collected as part of the Kili-SES research unit, Subproject 2, Work Package 2, which focuses on understanding the elements of nature that support non-material contributions, such as aesthetic enjoyment, recreation, and spirituality. Using the NCP paradigm, non-material contributions of nature to people (NCP) were identified through an inductive approach, together with the entities of nature (EN) mentioned in Twitter posts.</p> <p>This dataset builds on https://doi. org/10.5281/zenodo.14217191 by including those specific EN (and human-made features) mentioned by tourists on their Twitter posts - in order to enable evaluation of NCP-EN associations.&nbsp;<br><br>Overview: this dataset was collected in October 2021 using the R package academictwitteR with Twitter&rsquo;s official Application Programming Interface keys (API; <a href="https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs</a>). These are publicly available Tweets targeting Mount Kilimanjaro National Park (Tanzania) and its surroundings from 10 years (April 2011 to June 2021). Data were manually filtered and cleaned to preserve tourists' Tweets of their nature experiences at Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. These final dataset contains 1255 entries, and each observation represents a Tweet that contains at least one non-material nature's contributions to people (non-material NCP) and one entity of nature mentioned by an individual.<br><br>Please refer to the README document to understand the data structure of this dataset, and the corresponding codes to characterize each non-material NCP as either specialized or generalized.&nbsp;<br><br>This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), Research Unit 5064: &ldquo;The role of nature for human well-being in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System (Kili-SES)&rdquo; (Project Number 428658210).&nbsp;</p>

Supplementary material from "Evolutionary dynamics of sustainability ideas in China: inferences from ecological and economic concepts usage in People's Daily"

<p>Previous cultural evolutionary analyses have exploited the use of neutral models, or random copying models, analogous to neutral genetic drift, as null models to distinguish the unbiased copying and biased transmission of neutral cultural traits, but the dynamics and underlying mechanism of non-neutral cultural traits have not yet been explored. Adopting an ecological perspective, we define ecological and economic concepts as non-neutral cultural traits constitute a complex ecosystem of meaning representing sustainability ideas. We analyse the frequency distribution, turnover and innovation rates of nearly 4000 concepts appearing in <i>People's Daily</i> from 1946 to 2015. The results reveal that, ecological concepts show stronger tendency towards random copying than economic concepts. The popular ecological and economic concepts may experience conformist bias and anti-conformist bias respectively. Semantic and pragmatic differences of popular concepts affect the variability which indicate stronger cultural drift in the ontological domain. The frequency change in popular concepts also suggests positive selection due to political strategy and governmental policy.</p>

Knowledge, attitude and practice of the local people towards human-carnivore coexistence in Faragosa-Fura landscape, Gamo Zone, Southern Ethiopia

<p>Local people's knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) have played an important role in human-wildlife coexistence and have received increased attention in biodiversity conservation. However, studies on the KAP of local people towards human-carnivore coexistence (HCC) are scarce, species-specific, or limited to the protected areas. Therefore, we investigated the local people's KAP towards carnivores' coexistence with humans, the problem of livestock, and mitigation practices in a human-dominated landscape of Southern Ethiopia. We collected the data from 352 households' interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire and photographic sampling. The respondents mentioned 13 carnivores coexisting with local people belonging to six families. Eighty-five percent of the respondents perceived carnivores as problematic species and expressed a negative attitude towards them, primarily due to the damage they caused to their livestock. Respondents who had better knowledge of carnivores also showed a positive attitude towards carnivores. The cluster analysis showed that the spotted hyena, serval, leopard, common genet, and black-backed jackal were grouped under a high-threat cluster. Chickens and goats were the most threatened livestock reported by respondents. The main predation control methods reported were guarding and fencing for larger livestock and keeping chickens indoors during the night. The regression models predicted that males and literate respondents had better knowledge of carnivores than females and illiterates. The respondents who owned more livestock experienced more damage to livestock, and females showed a negative attitude towards carnivores. Although the study area is the critical conservation value of the 13 carnivore species, livestock predation by carnivores, the local people's negative attitude towards carnivores, and lethal predation control methods practiced by local people were affecting HCC in the area. The findings call for conservation actions such as conservation education to raise awareness and develop a positive attitude and non-lethal predation mitigation measures to promote HCC in consultation with the local community.</p>

Ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants used by Ensaro people to treat human diseases

<p class="CxSpFirst"><strong>Abstract </strong></p> <p class="CxSpMiddle"><strong>Introduction</strong>: - People all over the world have been using medicinal plants to treat various ailments and diseases throughout history. It is still common in developing countries. Because is easily accessible, affordable, and trusted by the communities. Although there are several ethnobotanical studies on medicinal plants in Ethiopia, the number of medicinal plant species and indigenous knowledge documented is still low compared to the high diversity of culture and habitats.</p> <p class="CxSpMiddle"><strong>Methods: -</strong> Ethnobotanical data were collected during the 13th of February 2019 and the 26th of October 2020 through Semi-structured interviews, field observation, a guided field walk, and focus group discussions</p> <p><strong>Result: - </strong>the study documented 142 medicinal plant species distributed in<strong> </strong>125 genera and 56 families which used to treat 52 ailments. Most of these species were collected from wild habitats. The most used plant families were Fabaceae (14) followed by lamiaceae (9) and Solanaceae (9). Most of these medicinal plants were herbs followed by shrubs.</p> <p class="CxSpMiddle"><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p class="CxSpMiddle">The study revealed a relatively high diversity of medicinal plants that indicated the existence of indigenous knowledge of using medicinal plants to treat ailments and diseases. The findings of this study supported up the idea that indigenous knowledge of using medicinal plants is still alive in highly degraded areas. To make sustainable use of these medicinal plants in the study area, local people must collaborate with natural resource administrators to manage them before they become seriously threatened. Both ex-situ and In-situ conservation strategies should be combined and employed urgently for optimal conservation results</p>
