Kinetic Model Data: Effect of Calcium on the Bioavailability of Dissolved Uranium (VI) in Plant Roots under Circumneutral pH

We integrated field measurements, hydroponic experiments, microscopy, and spectroscopy to investigate the effect of Ca(II) on dissolved U(VI) uptake by plants in 1 mM HCO3 − solutions at circumneutral pH. The accumulation of U in plants (3.1−21.3 mg kg−1) from the stream bank of the Rio Paguate, Jackpile Mine, New Mexico served as a motivation for this study. Brassica juncea was the model plant used for the laboratory experiments conducted over a range of U (30−700 μg L−1) and Ca (0−240 mg L−1) concentrations. The initial U uptake followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The initial U uptake rate (V0) ranged from 4.4 to 62 μg g−1 h−1 in experiments with no added Ca and from 0.73 to 2.07 μg g−1 h−1 in experiments with 12 mg L−1 Ca. No measurable U uptake over time was detected for experiments with 240 mg L−1 Ca. Ternary Ca−U−CO3 complexes may affect the decrease in U bioavailability observed in this study. Elemental X-ray mapping using scanning transmission electron microscopy−energy dispersive spectrometry detected U−P-bearing precipitates within root cell walls in water free of Ca. These results suggest that root interactions with Ca and carbonate in solution affect the bioavailability of U in plants. This study contributes relevant information to applications related to U transport and remediation of contaminated sites.

Urban Forest Effects Model (UFORE) to calculate forest structure and function from sample ground data. Two part set.

Within the City of Baltimore, 195 permanent 1/10 circular plots were established based on a stratified random sample among land uses in 1999. These plots were re-measured in 2004 and 2009 and will be re-measured again in 2014. On each plot, all trees (as defined as woody vegetation with a stem diameter at 4.5 ft (dbh) greater than one-inch) are recorded. For each tree, data are recorded on species, dbh, height, crown width, condition, crown competition, percent canopy missing and distance and direction to nearby residential buildings. These data are analyzed using the i-Tree model (www.itreetools.org) to assess ecosystem services and values. However, more importantly, these plots along with a comparable set of plots established in Syracuse, NY in 1999 are the first and most spatially comprehensive set of long-term urban forest monitoring data within cities globally. These data are being used to understand how urban forest structure and associated ecosystem services are changing through time in the City of Baltimore.

The Effects of Climate Downscaling Technique and Observational Dataset on Modeled Ecological Responses: Supporting Data Tables

These data have been prepared as a supplement to Pourmokhtarian et al. (2016; full citation below), where complete details on methods can be found. We evaluated three downscaling methods: the delta method (or the change factor method); monthly quantile mapping (Bias Correction-Spatial Disaggregation, or BCSD); and daily quantile regression (Asynchronous Regional Regression Model, or ARRM). Additionally, we trained outputs from four atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs) (CCSM3, HadCM3, PCM, and GFDL-CM2.1) driven by higher (A1fi) and lower (B1) future emissions scenarios on two sets of observations (1/8th degree resolution grid vs. individual weather station) to generate the high-resolution climate input for the forest biogeochemical model PnET-BGC (8 ensembles of 6 runs). This dataset consists of three files - 1) a zip archive file of all raw daily downscaled AOGCMs (csv format; years 1960-2099; delta method 2012-2099 only) which were used as input for PnET-BGC model, 2) a zip archive file of all PnET-BGC output files for each model run (csv format; years 1000-2100), and 3) a pdf document file that describes the content of the input and output files. They share a UTM zone 13 projection, NAD83 horizontal datum and NAVD88 vertical datum, with FGDC-compliant metadata. The DSM is available through an unrestricted public license, and can be obtained online or on DVD by request (see Distributor contact information below). Imagery available in this series includes orthorectified aerial photography for 1953, 1972, 1985, 1990, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.
