ASCAT-ERA5 and ASCAT-MERRA-2 Antarctic Peninsula Daily Surface Meltwater Production (2007-2022)

Estimates of daily surface meltwater production across the Antarctic Peninsula over 2007-2022. These data were generated using a random forest model combining enhanced resolution ASCAT C-Band radar backscatter, ASCAT-detected surface melt presence (https://zenodo.org/record/7995998), and ERA5 or MERRA-2 reanalysis sensible and latent heat fluxes, downward shortwave and longwave radiation, and 2-m temperature. Initial model training was undertaken using meteorological observations and surface melt estimates from surface energy balance modeling at several Larsen ice shelf automated weather stations (Jakobs et al., 2020), before scaling up to the Antarctic Peninsula region using ERA5 or MERRA-2.

Note that the ASCAT-ERA5 melt estimates here are updated to v2 using a revised random forest melt prediction model.
The ASCAT-MERRA-2 melt estimates here are the initial release (v1).

This record will be updated upon publication of a forthcoming manuscript.

Please reach out to Luke Trusel with questions!

Earthquake catalogue for the Taupō Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, 2007–2024

These files contain information on the earthquake catalogue presented in Illsley-Kemp & Mestel (2024). This contains earthquakes which occurred in the Taupō Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, between 2007–2024. For detail on methodology please refer to the original publication. There are two types of file; an xml file for each year which is in QuakeML format, this can be read with ObsPy, there is also two csv files, one for the absolute location catalogue, and one for the relocated catalogue.

All methodological details can be found in the associate paper, which can be found here: https://seismica.library.mcgill.ca/article/view/1490

If using this dataset please cite the orginal paper:

Illsley-Kemp, F. and Mestel, E., 2025. MPAS-Albany Land Ice model simulations of Humboldt Glacier, North Greenland, from 2007–2100

This dataset contains model input and output in netCDF format, model code, and analysis scripts for simulations of Humboldt Glacier, North Greenland, through the 21st century (Hillebrand et al., 2022) using the MPAS-Albany Land Ice model (Hoffman et al., 2018). We calibrate parameters controlling basal traction, iceberg calving, and submarine melt against observations from 2007–2017. We then explore the glacier’s sensitivity to climate forcing, iceberg calving, and basal conditions in an ensemble of 24 simulations from 2007–2100. We further explore its sensitivity to uncertainties in ice-shelf melt, bed topography, and calving rate limits in targeted sensitivity experiments. Input files include surface mass balance, ocean thermal forcing, and subglacial runoff forcings provided by ISMIP6 (Nowicki et al., 2020; Slater et al., 2020). Output includes basal traction optimization solutions for the year 2007; annual 2D ice speed, basal shear and driving stresses, and geometry; annual 3D temperature; and grounded, floating, and global mass budgets at every timestep.

References:

Hillebrand, T. Dissertation, 31(1-2), 14–27. https://doi.org/10 .1007/BF03322148

Curated by T. Sawi for the manuscript (in submission): An Unsupervised Machine-Learning Approach to Understanding Seismicity at an Alpine Glacier; by T. Sawi; B. Holtzman; M. Nettles; F. Walter; J. Paisley; submitted to JGR: Earth Surface in August 2022.

This data set contains two-second records of shallow (<50 m depth) glacial icequakes (N=1,460) from the vertical channel of a Geospace GS-11D geophone operating in shallow borehole at Gornergletscher between June 14 and July 22, 2007. Sampling rate is 1000 samples per second, and the natural frequency of the instrument is around 8 Hz. An STA/LTA filter has been applied to attempt to remove records with more than one prominent icequake in them.

Waveform files are named after their event origin time in format 7{MDhms}. For example, waveform "70614004000.gse2" occurred on June 14 00:40:00, 2007.
