A Promising Concept for the Development of Means for the Prevention of Radiation Pathologies

<p>The problem of developing radioprotective means, capable of mitigating the effects of radiation exposure on the body, is associated not only with the danger of terrorist, military incidents or emergencies at nuclear facilities. An important area for the use of radioprotectors is space exploration, in particular, the need for crew members, protected only by a spacesuit, to enter open space. Furthermore, the solution to the problem of radiotherapy complications in oncology can also be the use of selective radioprotectors able to protect healthy tissues without reducing the effectiveness of tumor radiotherapy. An example of such approach is the use of amifostine in radiotherapy of a number of head-neck tumors.</p> <p>It is important to understand that the developed means should be well tolerated not only by healthy volunteers, but also by people of different ages, physical conditions, including the elderly and debilitated cancer patients. In particular, the adverse effects of amifostine in its effective radioprotective doses lead to a significant limitation of its clinical use.</p> <p>The solution to the problem of radioprotector safety can be the development of combinations containing several radiomodifying substances in small doses. Such compositions are capable of providing a synergistic radioprotective effect and good patient tolerance.</p> <p>Compounds capable of selectively inhibiting endothelial and inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS) could be the base of such combinations. We have shown that NOS-inhibitors, in particular, N,S-substituted isothioureas, are highly effective in relatively safe doses. For example, the optimal radioprotective dose of one of them, T1023, with dose modifying factor (DMF) of 1.6 - 1.8, is 1/5-1/4 LD10.</p> <p>It has been shown that T1023 and its derivatives are highly effective both for parenteral and oral administration.</p> <p>These compounds provide pronounced prophylaxis of bone marrow and intestinal forms of acute radiation syndrome. Moreover, they are capable to effectively, with a DMF of 1.45, provide the prophylaxis of early and late complications in mouse and rat models of single and fractionated radiotherapy of solid tumors. It is important that the use of these compounds does not reduce the effectiveness of radiotherapy.</p> <p>The radioprotective effect of these compounds is realized by a specific molecular mechanism - by suppressing the endothelium-dependent eNOS/sGC/cGMP pathway of vascular relaxation. The mechanism of radioprotective activity of NOS inhibitors brings them with vasoactive radioprotectors - &alpha;1-adrenoreceptor agonists and 5-HT2 serotonin receptors. Therefore, their combined use is accompanied by a synergistic radioprotective effect. This opens up prospects for the creation of highly effective and safe radioprotector combinations.</p>

When expansion stalls: an extension to the concept of range pinning in ecology

Identifying the factors modulating range expansion is essential to accurately predict changes in the spatial distribution of populations. By preventing population growth after dispersal, Allee effects can lead to front stops in discrete space, called 'pinning' if permanent. However, other mechanisms, such as positive density-dependent dispersal, have also been shown to affect the rate of range expansion and generate discrete-space front stops, albeit temporarily. In this study, we investigated the stability of the front stops generated by such mechanisms in relation to the carrying capacity of the environment. To this end, we performed artificial range expansions in discrete space using stochastic simulations and microcosm experiments. Simulation results confirmed that density-dependent dispersal alone can generate sustained front stops, albeit for a limited range of carrying capacities. We also highlighted the synergy between Allee effects and density-dependent dispersal on pinning emergence. Experimental results, obtained using a model species known to exhibit density-dependent dispersal, but without Allee effects, confirmed the model results. Furthermore, our study raises the issue of carefully considering the conditions for pinning stability, in a stochastic context and depending on the time-scale considered.

Molecular systematics, species concepts and myrmecophytism in Cecropia (Cecropieae: Urticaceae): Insights from restriction-site associated DNA

<p><em>Cecropia</em> is a group of fast-growing pioneer trees that are important in forest regeneration and a common ant-plant mutualism in the Neotropics. To investigate the evolution of mutualism between <em>Cecropia</em> and associated ants a phylogenetic framework is necessary. <em>Cecropia</em> species are difficult to distinguish morphologically and conventional genetic markers are insufficiently variable to resolve phylogeny. Our study aimed to infer relationships in approximately half of the species in the genus using restriction site associated DNA (RAD) sequencing. RAD sequence data resolved and supported species level relationships, despite potential introgression based on D-statistic tests. Our results support a deeply divergent non-myrmecophytic clade including <em>C. sciadophylla </em>and African <em>Musanga</em>. Results from geographically widespread and morphologically heterogenous <em>C. obtusifolia</em> and <em>C. angustifolia</em> suggests that current synonymy lumps together genetically dissimilar lineages. Reconstruction of ant associations on the highly supported <em>Cecropia</em> phylogeny inferred equal probability of the ancestor of <em>Cecropia </em>being myrmecophytic or not. More intensive genetic study is needed to refine species concepts in <em>Cecropia</em>.</p>

Expanding the Concept of Comprehensive Area Ratio Parameter to the South-Central States: Towards Simplifying the Structural Evaluation of Flexible Pavements at the Network Level

<p>The surface deflection bowl data collected through falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is utilized by highway agencies in assessing the performance of the flexible pavement. However, a robust method to evaluate pavement sections utilizing FWD data from all the sensors is seldom developed. There is always a need for DOTs and highway agencies to have a simplified procedure, which can be directly implemented in agencies&#39; databases. This study focuses on expanding and validating the concept of previously developed area ratio parameters towards the pavement section of South-Central States (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas) in effectively analyzing the pavement performances. Simulation-based deflections are utilized to develop enhanced deflection-based parameters and to reduce the need for extensive FWD testing in the field. Ninety-seven pavement sections in these states are considered to implement and validate simplified procedures that will be readily available to various transportation agencies to evaluate their pavement conditions at the network level. Due to this purpose, a pavement ranking chart is proposed for the five South-Central states, which categorizes the pavement section into very good, good, fair, and poor pavement sections. Eventually, load-induced effects concerning developed parameters are effectively analyzed to predict the remaining service life of the flexible pavement structures. The developed methodologies will be helpful for DOTs and highway agencies to carry out the rehabilitation and maintenance work in time and estimate the budget required in these procedures.</p>

Psycholinguistic features of verbal representation of the concept of "gender inequality" by student youth

<p><strong><em>Goal. </em></strong><em>To present the results of a psycholinguistic experiment devoted to the study of verbal representations of the concept of &quot;gender inequality&quot; in the linguistic consciousness of young people.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Methods: </em></strong><em>a</em><strong><em>&nbsp;</em></strong><em>systematic analysis and generalization of literature on gender aspects of psycholinguistic research. Directed associative experiment (DAE) with the word-stimulus &quot;gender inequality&quot;; method of cognitive interpretation; questionnaire: to clarify the characteristics of the sample, comparative-descriptive and mathematical-statistical methods.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Results. </em></strong><em>The concept of &quot;gender inequality&quot; in the linguistic consciousness of student youth is represented by such frequent associations as: humiliate (6.8%), fight (4.5%), suppress (3.7%), insult (2.6%) and limit (2.3%). Differences in the most frequent reactions of women and men were revealed: women - to humiliate 42 (7.9%), to fight 32 (6%), to suppress 19 (3.6%), to limit 16 (3%), to insult 15 (2.8%) ), respect 11 (2.1%), solve 11 (2.1%); men: humiliate 11 (4.5%), oppress 10 (4.1%), insult 5 (2%), defend 5 (2%). </em></p>

Following Darwin's footsteps: Evaluating the impact of an activity designed for elementary school students to link historically important evolution key concepts on their understanding of natural selection

<p>While several researchers have suggested that evolution should be explored from the initial years of schooling, little information is available on effective resources to enhance elementary school students' level of understanding of evolution by natural selection (LUENS). For the present study, we designed, implemented and evaluated an educational activity planned for fourth graders to explore concepts and conceptual fields that were historically important for the discovery of natural selection. Observation field notes and students' productions were used to analyse how the students explored the proposed activity. Additionally, an evaluation framework consisting of a test, the evaluation criteria and the scoring process was applied in two fourth-grade classes to estimate elementary school students' LUENS before and after engaging in the activity. Our results suggest that our activity allowed students to effectively link all of the key concepts in the classroom and produced a significant increase in their LUENS. These results indicate that our activity had a positive impact on students' understanding of natural selection. They also reveal that additional activities and minor fine-tuning of the present activity are required to further support students' learning about the concept of differential reproduction. We also observed a low level of teleological predictions for both pre- and post-tests. --</p>
