User participation in digital accessibility evaluations: reviewing methods and objectives

<p><span>Although laws and standardization bodies promote user participation in digital accessibility evaluations, people with disabilities still consider themselves excluded from this process. One reason could be the lack of systematized knowledge about evaluation methods involving users. This article seeks to understand how and for what purpose digital accessibility evaluations with user participation were conducted in the scientific literature from 2018 to 2021. Three types of user participation emerged: 1) user-based usability testing to evaluate task accomplishment, user reactions and interface qualities; 2) interviewing users to assess the local and social factors impacting digital service accessibility; 3) using questionnaires or crowdsourcing to check the compliance of certain interfaces with accessibility standards. Participants are primarily chosen based on their functional impairments and, to a lesser degree, their project-related skills, biographical information, technology habits, among other criteria. The comprehensive user insights gained with these methods are judged to be positive whereas the lack of representativeness of the selected user samples is found to be regrettable. The article finally discusses the definitions of accessibility and disability that underpin these methodologies.</span></p>

PSM-AP Comparative document analysis data: Priorities and challenges in the policy and digital strategies of ten PSM

<p>The document consists of a list of 61 key policy and strategy documents analysed as part of the comparative work conducted in WP1 of the project Public Service Media in the Age of Platforms (PSM-AP). It also contains a series of selected quotes supporting the three key areas prioritised by the policies and PSM digital strategies: People (reaching audiences), Personalisation (developing the video-on-demand portal), and Prominence (of PSM services and content). The data was collected and analysed in 2023, from documents concerning 10 PSM organisations in seven media markets: Belgium-Flanders (VRT), Belgium-Wallonia Brussels (RTBF), Canada (CBC/Radio-Canada), Denmark (DR, TV 2) Italy (RAI), Poland (TVP), and the UK (BBC, Channel 4, ITV). All quotes were translated to English by the authors.</p>

African Red Slip Ware Digital (ARS3D) - Images (Features)

<p>Characteristic of the North African bowls, plates, and jugs are their pictorial decorations applied mainly by appliqu&eacute;s and stamps. As mass-produced image carriers and everyday objects, the ARS spread throughout the empire.</p> <p>The range of motifs includes mythological scenes as well as scenes from the Old and New Testament, circus, arena and hunting scenes as well as fish and plant motifs. The appliqu&eacute;s-decorated pottery thus provides insights into Late Antique imagination and its changes, as well as into the economic history of the period between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD in North Africa.</p> <p>Previous documentation methods were not able to capture the objects and their decoration in an adequate way. The digital recording of the RGZM&#39;s collections by 3D scans allows to compare potentially identical appliqu&eacute;s and to assign them to their negative forms and the corresponding stamps.</p> <p>Whereas vessel curvature previously falsified the assignment of appliqu&eacute;s and models, 3D analysis and visualisation tools now allow a comparison . Metadata created for each object increases the effectiveness and accuracy of determining image context and content. Issues related to the production of the ARS and the process flows within the workshops can be investigated through the analysis of the 3D data.</p>

Database of digital media publications on maternal (family) capital in Russia in 2006-2019

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>The database contains data from publications of digital Russian-language media of the Russian Federation on the topic of maternity capital in the period from May 10, 2006 to June 30, 2019. The database includes uploading general data on publications on maternity capital in .xls formats (UTF-8 encoding) . Full texts of publications are presented in .xml format.</p> <p>A specialized request was generated for the aggregator of publications of Russian-language digital mass media <a href="https://vk.com/away.php?to=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.ru&amp;cc_key=">public.ru</a> . In total, the database consists of 457888 publications of 7665 publishing houses from 1251 settlements in Russia on the territory of 85 regions. The selection of publications was limited to the time period from May 10, 2006 (Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin first announced the maternity capital programme in his message to the Federal Assembly, as one of the mechanisms to stimulate fertility and overcome the demographic crisis) to June 30, 2019 (until this date, the programme allowed full uploading of media publications without losses during the period of uploading publications from 01.08.2021 to 15.08.2021).</p> <p>Key words used to select articles on maternity capital: &ldquo;maternal capital&rdquo;, &ldquo;maternity capital&rdquo;, &ldquo;family capital&rdquo;, &ldquo;paternal capital&rdquo;. The publication had to repeat at least two phrases from the request, while the distance between the phrases had to be no more than 4 sentences. This excluded publications in which the topic of maternity capital was mentioned incidentally, indirectly.</p> <p>Duplicate articles were removed from the database. Duplicates related to publications that included a full repetition of the text of the publication itself, the publishing house and the municipality (location) of the publishing house. Duplications (reprints) of articles in other publishing houses or in other regions were not excluded.&nbsp;</p> <p>After lemmatization of the text (as well as after reducing the text to lower case, removing unnecessary spaces, numbers and punctuation), according to the RuSentiLex2017 dictionary (Loukachevitch N., Levchik A. Creating a General Russian Sentiment Lexicon. In Proceedings of Language Resources and Evaluation Conference LREC-2016, 2016.)&nbsp;unique positive, negative and neutral words and phrases (variables) were counted.&nbsp;Repetitions of tonal words (stances) are <strong>not counted.</strong></p>

Today, the GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) companies have gained dominance, not only in marketing and communication but also in other fields. Power asymmetries also have geostrategic implications in the rivalry between the United States and China. With data protection regulation, the European Union, Brasil, and other countries are pursuing a regulatory model in the digital realm. I will discuss the opportunities of this regulation for preserving privacy and democratic values in society.</p> <p>Ingrid Schneider is professor of political science in the center &ldquo;Ethics in Information Technology&rdquo; at University of Hamburg in Germany. With FGV, she is part of the EU-funded project PRODIGEES (Promoting Research on Digitalisation in Emerging Powers and Europe Towards Sustainable Development) which she will also present in her lecture. rmidura/emdigit: Early Modern Digital Itineraries: Itinerating Europe Article Appendix & Data

<p>This project combines history of the book with digital approaches to explore how a database of sixteenth- through eighteenth-century itineraries may reshape our understanding of historical travel and communication. Printed itinerary books provided early modern travelers with lists of cities along routes. Digital spatial approaches often rely upon modern mapmaking and its built-in assumptions of up-to-date accuracy, decentered viewpoint, stable place identifiers, and direct distances. The data provided has been hand-entered from over 80 multilingual, international itineraries published from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries and formatted for relative ease of use with network and spatial analysis tools.</p> <p>The data provided here represents the stage of work at the time of publication of Rachel Midura, Itinerating Europe: Early Modern Spatial Networks in Printed Itineraries, 1545&ndash;1700, Journal of Social History, Volume 54, Issue 4, Summer 2021, Pages 1023&ndash;1063, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/jsh/shab011">https://doi.org/10.1093/jsh/shab011</a>. Drawing from the physical and digitized collections of European state libraries, the database includes more than three-quarters of identified itinerary authors (twenty-five of thirty-two) and nearly a third of identified surviving editions (84 of 299, see Appendix). The resulting database consists of 3,655 unique routes, connecting 1,587 cities, published and re-published over the course of two centuries.</p> <p>All titles featured in the appendix bibliography follow the format of a header (&quot;Rome to Milan&quot;) followed by a list of intermediary cities. Narrative guidebooks are only included if they feature such route tables as a significant component.</p> <p>I distinguish between a &quot;route,&quot; meaning an abstracted connection between an origin, a destination, and possible intermediaries (&quot;Rome to Paris via Milan,&quot;) and an &quot;edge,&quot; meaning a one-to-one relationship between locations (&quot;Rome to Paris,&quot; &quot;Rome to Milan,&quot; and &quot;Milan to Paris.&quot;). Routes and edges both preserve the original directionality, distinguishing between &quot;Rome to Paris,&quot; and &quot;Paris to Rome,&quot; for example.</p> <p>This dataset consists solely of the route headers found across the included itineraries and not the intermediary stops within at the present time.
