A Dataset for Violence Trends in the Ancient Middle East between 12,000 and 400 BCE

Thsi archive provides all data generated and analysed and the custom codes produced for the study which will be published in Nature Human Behaviour with the title "Violence Trends in the Ancient Middle East between 12,000 and 400 BCE". In this paper we study violence trends in the very long run by exploiting a novel dataset on cranial trauma and weapon-related wounds from skeletons excavated across the Middle East, spanning the whole pre-Classical period (ca. 12,000-400 BCE). The data set includes more than 3,500 individuals. These data have been collected from existing online digital archives, electronic and print original publications, and from unpublished field reports.

Database of experimental determinations of soil respiration in pine and spruce forests during the growing season of 2023 at the Lyalsky test site (middle taiga, northeast of the East European Plain)

The data set includes the results of 342 measurements of CO2 emissions (SR, gС/m2/day) from the soil surface of coniferous ecosystems at the Lyalsky test site during the growing season (May-September) of 2023. The objects of the study were: pine forest (PS, Gleyic Folic Albic Podzol (Arenic)) and spruce forest (SM, Albic Retisols). The values of temperature (Ts, at a depth of 10 cm), moisture (Ms, in a layer of 0-5 cm) of the soil and air temperature (Ta) are also given.

The research was carried out by employees of the Institute of Biology of Komi Science Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the most important innovative project of national importance "Development of a system for ground-based and remote monitoring of carbon pools and greenhouse gas fluxes in the territory of the Russian Federation, ensuring the creation of recording data systems on the fluxes of climate-active substances and the carbon budget in forests and other terrestrial ecological systems" (Registration number: 123030300031-6).

Data from Uerpmann 1987, The Ancient Distribution of Ungulate Mammals in the Middle East, TAVO A27

Data from Uerpmann’s (1987), The Ancient Distribution of Ungulate Mammals in the Middle East, volume 27 of the Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients (TAVO), Series A.

Uerpmann catalogued the occurrence of ungulate taxa in animal bone assemblages from 196 sites across the Middle East, from the Lower Palaeolithic to the historic period. Though no longer up-to-date, it remains one of the most comprehensive resources on quaternary biogeography in Southwest Asia. Here, the catalogue included in the volume has been transcribed into a structured format suitable for modern computerised data analysis.

See README.md for further information and usage notes.

Goryeocrinus pentagrammos n. gen. n. sp. (Rhodocrinitidae; Diplobathrida), the first record of camerate crinoid from the Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) of South Korea (East Gondwana)

Goryeocrinus pentagrammos n. gen. n. sp. from the Jigunsan Formation of South Korea is described, which is the first diplobathrid record from Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian) of East Gondwana. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that G. pentagrammos is a member of the paraphyletic Rhodocrinitidae of the Diplobathrida and most closely related to Paradiabolocrinus from the Late Ordovician (Sandbian) of Laurentia. G. pentagrammos is characterized by having a pentameral, flat bowl-shaped calyx, conspicuous pentagrammatic ridge formed by bifurcated median ray ridge and pentagonal basal ridge, at least two interradials in the first row of regular interrays, and anitaxial ridge originating from CD interray but close to C ray radial, and lacking intrabrachials and interradials between secundibrachials. The occurrence of G. pentagrammos from South Korea (East Gondwana) drastically expands Ordovician paleogeographic range of the camerates which have otherwise been recorded from Laurentia, West Gondwana, Avalonia, and Baltica.
