Miner Bottle (Drinkblik)

This is a miner bottle ('drinkblik' in Dutch) used underground inside the mines. This particular type of bottle is an old model, which dates back to the 1930's. Every miner brought his own drinking bottle from home and these were usually filled at the mine with drinks such as water, coffea, tea, or milk. Miners used to make long working days, and so this water bottle was essential to have throughout the day. Considering the high temperatures underground, it was important to drink enough throughout the day to prevent dehydration. This particular type of bottle was made of metal which made it resistant to the harsh conditions inside the mines. Furthermore, a bottle made of metal was able to keep the liquid inside the bottle at its 'above-ground' temperature much longer than bottles of different materials. Considering this particular type of bottle was used around the 1930's, it is still in very good condition. Corn Springs Miners Cabin Corn Springs Cabin is located near Desert Center California. Corn Springs Mining District was established in 1897. Miners came to the area and used the water for processing their gold ore, in the late 19th century. The most notable resident of the spring was Gus Lederer. The self-proclaimed "Mayor of Corn Springs", was Gus Lederer. He lived at the spring until 1932, when he died from a black widow spider bite. There is a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground nearby and Chemehuevi, Desert Cahuilla and Yuma bands carved elaborate petroglyphs in the nearby rocks. A medical bag used by miners

## This is a [medical bag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_bag) this bag was used to treat injured miners in the 20th century. The front of the bag, shows a red cross on a white background, a symbol that can even nowadays be found on hospitals or on ambulances. This [red cross emblem](https://www.redcross.ca/about-us/about-the-canadian-red-cross/red-cross-emblem) made sure that every miner knew the purpose and contents of the bag, which used to be stuffed with medical equipment like gauze or a stethoscope. The bag was made out of leather to ensure that it could be used for a long period of time, but nowadays it is in a bad shape due to its use and age. An isotope study on Nitrogen and Phosphorus use efficiency and movement in soil in a mimicked vermicompost-based organo-mineral fertilizer

<p>Vermicompost (VC), a stabilized organic material with high organic and humic carbon, and favorable aggregation properties, was tested as a fraction of organo-mineral fertilizers (OMFs), where organic and mineral fractions interact in hotspot areas with surrounding soil. Solutions containing <sup>33</sup>P radioisotope and <sup>15</sup>N labeled mineral fertilizers were combined with vermicompost at two ratios of organic carbon (C<sub>org</sub>) to mineral nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) (OMF<sub>7.5C </sub>and OMF<sub>15C</sub>) to simulate OMF granules. Control treatments included unfertilized soil (N<sub>0</sub>P<sub>0</sub>), mineral fertilizer (MF<sub>NP</sub>), and sole vermicompost at 2 rates (OF<sub>7.5C </sub>and OF<sub>15C</sub>). Nitrogen and P uptake by Italian ryegrass (<em>Lolium multiflorum</em>) were measured over in 8 weeks. Furthermore, MF<sub>NP</sub>, OMF<sub>7.5C</sub>, and OMF<sub>15C </sub>treatments were incubated for 10 days without plant to measure atom% <sup>15</sup>N excess and <sup>33</sup>P radioactivity, as indicators of N and P movement from two soil layers (surrounding fertilizer hotspot and below it). In the pot study, OMF<sub>15C </sub>caused 24% lower biomass and less nutrient recovery derived from fertilizer (N -11%, P –8.5%), compared to MF<sub>NP</sub>. In the incubation study, OMF<sub>15C </sub>exhibited +19% atom% <sup>15</sup>N excess in the combined two soil layers, relative to MF<sub>NP</sub>, and +28% <sup>33</sup>P radioactivity in the soil surrounding the hotspot, and –89 % in the soil below it. We interpreted this as a reduction in nutrient availability of the combined vermicompost+mineral fertilizers, due to lower P mobility in soil. The combination of vermicompost with mineral fertilizers can reduce P movement in soil. A higher C<sub>org</sub>:N:P ratio resulted in lower nutrient use efficiency in two months.</p>

Ancient insect vision tuned for flight amongst rocks and plants underpins natural flower colour diversity - rock, mineral, stick, bark, leaf, bird- and insect-flower petal reflectance spectra

<p>Understanding the origins of flower colour signalling to pollinators is fundamental to evolutionary biology and ecology. Flower colour evolves under pressure from visual systems of pollinators, like birds and insects, to establish global signatures among flowers with similar pollinators. However, an understanding of the ancient origins of this relationship remains elusive. Here, we employ computer simulations to generate artificial flower backgrounds assembled from real material sample spectra of rocks, leaves, and dead plant materials, against which to test flowers' visibility to birds and bees. Our results indicate how flower colours differ from their backgrounds in strength, and the distributions of salient reflectance features when perceived by these key pollinators, to reveal the possible origins of their colours. Since Hymenopteran visual perception evolved before flowers, the terrestrial chromatic context for its evolution to facilitate flight and orientation consisted of rocks, leaves, sticks, and bark. Flowers exploited these pre-evolved visual capacities of their visitors, and in response evolved chromatic features to signal to bees, and differently to birds, against a backdrop of other natural materials. Consequently, it appears that today's flower colours may be an evolutionary response to the vision of diurnal pollinators navigating their world millennia prior to the first flowers.</p>

Data from: Disequilibrium oxygen isotope distribution among aqueously altered minerals in Ryugu asteroid returned samples

<p>Oxygen 3-isotope ratios of magnetite and carbonates in aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites provide important clues to understanding the evolution of the fluid in the asteroidal parent bodies. We conducted oxygen 3-isotope analyses of magnetite, dolomite, and breunnerite in two sections of asteroid Ryugu returned samples, A0058 and C0002, using a secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS). Magnetite was analyzed by using a lower primary ion energy that reduced instrumental biases due to the crystal orientation effect. We found two groups of magnetite data identified from the SIMS pit morphologies: (1) higher δ<sup>18</sup>O (from 3‰ to 7‰) and ∆<sup>17</sup>O (~2‰) with porous SIMS pits mostly from spherulitic magnetite, and (2) lower δ<sup>18</sup>O (~ –3‰) and variable ∆<sup>17</sup>O (0-2‰) mostly from euhedral magnetite. Dolomite and breunnerite analyses were conducted using multi-collection Faraday cup detectors with precisions ≤0.3‰. The dependence of instrumental biases on carbonate compositions was corrected using two methods, using Fe and (Fe+Mn) contents, because Ryugu dolomite contains higher amounts of Mn than the terrestrial standard. Results of dolomite and breunnerite analyses show a narrow range of ∆<sup>17</sup>O; 0.0–0.3‰ for dolomite in A0058 and 0.2–0.8‰ for dolomite and breunnerite in C0002. The majority of breunnerite, including large ≥100 µm grains, show systematically lower δ<sup>18</sup>O (~21‰) than dolomite (25–30‰ and 23–27‰ depending on the instrumental bias corrections). The equilibrium temperatures between magnetite and dolomite from the coarse-grained lithology in A0058 are calculated to be 51±11˚C and 78±14˚C, depending on the instrumental bias correction scheme for dolomite; a reliable temperature estimate would require a Mn-bearing dolomite standard to evaluate the instrumental bias corrections, which is not currently available. These results indicate that oxygen isotope ratios of aqueous fluids in the Ryugu parent asteroid were isotopically heterogeneous, either spatially or temporally. Initial water ice accreted to the Ryugu parent body might have ∆<sup>17</sup>O &gt;2‰ that was melted and interacted with anhydrous solids with the initial ∆<sup>17</sup>O &lt;0‰.  In the early stage of aqueous alteration, spherulitic magnetite and calcite formed from aqueous fluid with ∆<sup>17</sup>O ~2‰ that was produced by isotope exchange between water (∆<sup>17</sup>O &gt;2‰) and anhydrous solids (∆<sup>17</sup>O &lt;0‰). Dolomite and breunnerite along with some magnetite formed at a later stage of aqueous alteration under higher water-to-rock ratios and the oxygen isotope ratios were nearly at equilibrium between fluid and solid phases. Including literature data, δ<sup>18</sup>O of carbonates decreases in the order of calcite, dolomite, and breunnerite, suggesting that the temperature of alteration might have increased with the degree of aqueous alteration.</p>

Mineral nitrogen nutrition of Fagus sylvatica L roots colonized by ectomycorrhizal fungi in native forest soil

<p>The aim of this study was to examine the transcription-level response of a symbiotic system comformed by the host tree <em>Fagus sylvatica</em> L (European beech) and the root-associated mycobiota to fluctuations in ammonium and nitrate availability in the soil. The experiment was conducted with young trees grown at a natural regeneration forest. We used <sup>15</sup>N stable isotopes in combination with DNA-based and RNA-based molecular methods and Illumina sequencing.</p> <p>We report data on the beech root-associated fungal community structure obtained by metabarcoding of the fungal ITS2 region, transcriptome data from the fungal community associated to the tree roots, and transcriptome data from <em>Fagus sylvatica</em> L in response to ammonium or nitrate application to the soil. We also report data from soil ammonium-N, soil-nitrate-N, tree and soil dry mass, root 15N, root N, root C, root carbohydrates, root ammonium-N, root nitrate-N, soil pH, and climate data from the experiment.</p>
