Rubble Biodiversity Samplers (RUBS): 3D-printed coral models to standardise biodiversity censuses
<p>1. To ensure standardised, quantitative and repeatable methodologies, marine ecologists have engineered a range of artificial units to survey benthic communities with varying designs depending on target taxa, life history stage and habitat. In tropical ecosystems, autonomous units have typically lacked microhabitat complexity (e.g. planar tiles), short-term efficacy (> 1 y deployment) and/or a truly standardised design to sample cryptobenthic diversity.<br> 2. Coral rubble is characterised by high microhabitat complexity, which is unresolved in sampling efforts. Yet, rubble can support the greatest density and diversity of metazoan taxa.<br> 3. We engineered Rubble Biodiversity Samplers (RUBS) as a dismantlable lightweight 3D-printed model to standardise cryptobenthic biodiversity sampling.<br> 4. We demonstrate the effectiveness of RUBS with preliminary results from short-term (1–14 days) deployments in Palau, Western Micronesia.<br> 5. RUBS uphold the microhabitat complexity inherent in coral rubble (~50% interstitial space) and provide an effective and efficient methodology to sample cryptobenthic fauna, which could be applied in comparative studies.<br> 6. The RUBS concept provides a platform for the broader implementation of 3D-printed models in marine ecology to overcome issues of standardisation regardless of habitat type.</p>

<p>This dataset contains data about references to the Encyclopedia of Sociology(Sociologická encyklopedie, <a href="https://encyklopedie.soc.cas.cz/">https://encyklopedie.soc.cas.cz/</a>, in Czech language only) from articles on the Czech Wikipedia in the period from 2020-03-12 to 2020-08-31. Data from: Disentangling visual and olfactory signals in mushroom-mimicking Dracula orchids using realistic three-dimensional printed flowers
Flowers use olfactory and visual signals to communicate with pollinators. Disentangling the relative contributions and potential synergies between signals remains a challenge. Understanding the perceptual biases exploited by floral mimicry illuminates the evolution of these signals. Here, we disentangle the olfactory and visual components of Dracula lafleurii, which mimics mushrooms in size, shape, color and scent, and is pollinated by mushroom-associated flies. To decouple signals, we used three-dimensional printing to produce realistic artificial flower molds that were color matched and cast using scent-free surgical silicone, to which we could add scent. We used GC-MS to measure scents in co-occurring mushrooms, and related orchids, and used these scents in field experiments. By combining silicone flower parts with real floral organs, we created chimeras that identified the mushroom-like labellum as a source of volatile attraction. In addition, we showed remarkable overlap in the volatile chemistry between D. lafleurii and co-occurring mushrooms. The characters defining the genus Dracula – a mushroom-like, 'gilled' labellum and a showy, patterned calyx – enhance pollinator attraction by exploiting the visual and chemosensory perceptual biases of drosophilid flies. Our techniques for the manipulation of complex traits in a nonmodel system not conducive to gene silencing or selective breeding are useful for other systems.
Controlled packing and single-droplet resolution of 3D-printed functional synthetic tissues
<p>3D-printing networks of droplets connected by interface bilayers is a powerful platform to build synthetic tissues, in which functionality relies on precisely ordered structures. However, the structural precision and consistency in assembling these structures is currently limited, which restricts intricate designs and the complexity of functions performed by synthetic tissues. Here, we report that the equilibrium contact angle (<i>θ<sub>DIB</sub></i>) between a pair of droplets is a key parameter that dictates the tessellation and precise positioning of hundreds of picolitre droplets within 3D-printed, multi-layer networks. When <i>θ<sub>DIB</sub></i> approximates the geometrically-derived critical angle (<i>θ<sub>c</sub></i>) of 35.3º, the resulting networks of droplets arrange in regular hexagonally close-packed (hcp) lattices with the least fraction of defects. With this improved control over droplet packing, we can 3D-print functional synthetic tissues with single-droplet-wide conductive pathways. Our new insights into 3D droplet packing permit the fabrication of complex synthetic tissues, where precisely positioned compartments perform coordinated tasks.</p>

Do it yourself: 3D-printed miniature CDC trap for adult mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) surveillance
<p>The central component of mosquito and vector surveillance programs globally is the adult mosquito trap, which is intended to collect host-seeking mosquitoes. The miniature CDC trap is a widely distributed trap style in part due to its relative affordability and compact nature. Despite already being a simple trap, in-house production methods, such as 3D printing, could improve the accessibility of the CDC trap by eliminating some of the supply chain variables. We present here several trials with the Salt Lake City (SLC) trap, a three-dimensional (3D) printed trap design. Functional assessments were made on secondary components and found no statistically significant differences when comparing CO<sub>2</sub> line height (above vs. below fan), battery types (sealed lead acid vs. USB battery pack), and trap body collection shape (funnel body vs. simple/straight body). The SLC trap was compared directly to a commercial equivalent, the ABC trap, with comparative assessment on species diversity and evenness in collections and found to be statistically equivalent on all metrics. Methods also detail an accompanying optional transport system for a pressurized CO<sub>2</sub>/regulator set-up, should a practitioner elect not to use dry ice. Our final design is presented here with the publicly published stereolithography (STL) files and a detailed outline of the transport container system. Alternative models are available for in-house manufacture of mosquito traps, and we contribute these designs in an effort to stimulate further growth in vector surveillance.</p>
Experimental studies on snaking in 3D-printed cylindrical shells under axial compression using photogrammetry
<p>The buckling instability of cylindrical shells under axial compression has been one of the most renowned problems in structural engineering for several decades. Many pioneering works in the 20<sup>th</sup> century have provided insights into understanding the shells' infamous imperfection sensitivity and led to reliability-based designs. However, a recent surge in numerical studies of the snaking phenomenon explores the development of a localised stable post-buckling mode in axially compressed cylindrical shells. Hitherto, none of the experimental studies report on the evolution of azimuthal snaking. In this work, experimental studies are carried out with the objective of revealing the snaking phenomenon. The axial compression experiments are performed on 3D-printed shells made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The work's novelty lies in the usage of TPU shells for slowing down the propagation of circumferential dimples and making it feasible to capture them using Photogrammetry. Despite the match between the experimental and numerical mode shapes, the experiments reveal multiple routes for the snaking sequence. Furthermore, mode transitions such as reduction in circumferential wave number and transformation of symmetric mode into an asymmetric one are observed. These experimental results provide insights into the localised phenomenon of snaking and validate numerical solutions.</p>
