Data supplement for: Agreement of analytical and simulation-based estimates of the required land depth in climate models
<p>Many current-generation climate models have land components that are too shallow. Under climate change conditions, the long-term warming trend at the surface propagates deeper into the ground than the commonly used 3-10m. Shallow models alter the terrestrial heat storage and distribution of temperatures in the subsurface, influencing the simulated land-atmosphere interactions. Previous studies focusing on annual timescales suggest that deeper models are required to match subsurface-temperature observations and the classic analytical heat conduction solution. However, for a systematic investigation of land-model deepening in the frame of anthropogenic climate change, the classic analytical solution is inaccurate because it does not mimic the timescale and amplitude of the simulated warming trend. This study intends to bridge the gap between analytical and simulation-based estimates of the subsurface thermodynamic state by adapting the classic analytical framework to mimic long-term anthropogenic warming. The analysis shows that a land-model depth of at least 170m is recommended for a proper simulation of the post-1850 ground climate, which differs up to 30% from the estimate of the classic approach. Compared to previous studies, this provides an accurate estimate of the required land model depth for long-term climate-change simulations and indicates the relative bias in insufficiently deep land models.</p>

Data and code for the manuscript Retrieving Water Vapor From an E-band Microwave Link With an Empirical Model Not Requiring In-situ Calibration
<p>Data and code for the manuscript <em>Retrieving Water Vapor From an E-band Microwave Link With an Empirical Model Not Requiring In-situ Calibration</em> accepted for publication to<em> </em> <em>Earth and Space Science</em> in October 2021.</p> <p>The dataset contains 7 month of total losses (transmitted - received power levels) and retrieved water vapor density from a 4.87 km long full-duplex E-band commercial microwave link (CML) operating at 73.5 and 83.5 GHz in Prague, CZ. The CML was operated as a part of a mobile phone backhaul. Furthermore, observations of air temperature, and air relative humidity from sites close to the CML end nodes are provided. Finally, theoretical gaseous attenuation calculated from the air temperature and relative humidity is included as a part of the dataset.</p> <p>Data are stored in semicolon-delimited csv files. Time stamps are in UTC time in the format yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM:SS. All time series are regular and have 5-min temporal resolution. Metadata are stored in text files.</p> <p>The code is in a form of R Markdown files and html notebooks. Results presented in the manuscript Retrieving Water Vapor From an E-band Microwave Link With an Empirical Model Not Requiring In-situ Calibration and in its Supporting information are fully reproducible using this dataset.</p>
Data from: Ecological requirements drive the variable responses of wheat pests and natural enemies to the landscape context
<p>1. Semi-natural habitats (SNH) are considered essential for pest suppressive landscapes, but their influence on crop pests and natural enemies can be highly variable. Instead of SNH per se, the availability of resources, such as pollen and nectar, may be more relevant for supporting pest control.</p> <p>2. Here, we assessed the spatio-temporal variation of multiple insect pests (cereal leaf beetles and aphids) and natural enemies (predators and aphid parasitoids) in wheat fields and their responses to landscape context and flower availability. We combined detailed information on pollen use by natural enemies with the specific distribution of pollen-providing plants across a gradient of landscape composition and configuration.</p> <p>3. The abundance of wheat pests was tightly linked to wheat development stage. Syrphids colonised the fields early in the season, while the abundance of other enemies increased later in the season. The responses of pests to landscape structure were variable and, while some pests had low abundances in landscapes with high edge density and SNH cover, <em>Sitobion avenae</em> abundance was positively associated with SNH cover. Lacewings, syrphids and cereal leaf beetles were abundant in landscapes with diverse and abundant flower resources, whereas the abundance of parasitoids and Nabis sp. was driven by aphid abundance. We detected no significant indirect effects of landscape on pests via natural enemies.</p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications. Our findings highlight the need for conservation biological control to go beyond "one size fits all" and consider the specific ecology of the involved organisms. Landscapes with high edge density and flowering woody plants may support natural enemies, in particular syrphids, which colonised the fields early in the season. Incentives for pest-suppressive landscapes should focus on tailored strategies that disfavour pests and simultaneously enhance natural enemies according to their ecological requirements.</p>

Divergent water requirements partition exposure risk to parasites in wild equids
<p><span>For grazing herbivores, dung density in feeding areas is an important determinant of exposure risk to faecal-orally transmitted parasites. When host species share the same parasite species, a non-random distribution of their cumulative dung density and/or non-random ranging and feeding behaviour may skew exposure risk and the relative selection pressure parasites impose on each host. The arid-adapted Grevy's zebra (<em>Equus grevyi</em>) can range more widely than the water-dependent plains zebra (<em>Equus quagga</em>), with which it shares the same species of gastrointestinal nematodes. We studied how the spatial distribution of zebra dung relates to ranging and feeding behaviour to assess parasite exposure risk in Grevy's and plains zebras at a site inhabited by both zebra species. We found that zebra dung density declined with distance from water, Grevy's zebra home ranges (excluding those of territorial males) were farther from water than those of plains zebras, and plains zebra grazing areas had higher dung density than random points while Grevy's zebra grazing areas did not, suggesting a greater exposure risk in plains zebras associated with their water dependence. Faecal egg counts increased with home range proximity to water for both species, but the response was stronger in plains zebras, indicating that this host species may be particularly vulnerable to the elevated exposure risk close to water. We further ran experiments on microclimatic effects on dung infectivity and showed that fewer nematode eggs embryonated in dung in the sun than in the shade. However, only 5% of the zebra dung on the landscape was in shade, indicating that the microclimatic effects of shade on the density of infective larvae is not a major influence on exposure risk dynamics. Ranging constraints based on water requirements appear to be key mediators of nematode parasite exposure in free-ranging equids.</span></p>
Data from: Explaining productivity variation in response to nitrogen addition and warming requires intraspecific variability
<p>1. Recent studies have shown that intraspecific trait variability is an important source of total trait variation. However, the contribution of intraspecific variability to ecosystem functions in the face of global change remains unknown.</p> <p>2. We measured plant height, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content and leaf thickness of 26 species at individual or leaf level and aboveground net primary productivity in 48 subplots subjected to 8 years of nitrogen addition and warming in a Tibetan alpine meadow. We split community weighted mean (CWM) and Rao's quadratic entropy (Rao) of individuals' traits within a given community into "fixed value" (only caused by interspecific difference of traits) and intraspecific variability (only caused by intraspecific difference), respectively, using a variance partitioning method.</p> <p>3. We found that productivity showed a humped back response to nitrogen addition: it was highest at intermediate levels of nitrogen fertilization. The response trend was mediated by the changes of plant functional structure. Productivity was positive with fixed Rao of plant height and intraspecific variability of leaf area, i.e. community having higher fixed variability of plant height and individuals producing bigger leaf area can increase productivity via niche complementary and dominance effect. Warming reduced productivity directly and marginally decreased individuals' leaf area which suppresses productivity indirectly.</p> <p>4. Our research suggests the non-negligible role of plant intraspecific trait variability in maintaining ecosystem functions, especially in the face of global change.</p>

<p>Dataset for study "‘Conditional Acceptance’ (additional experiments required): A scoping review of recent evidence on key aspects of Open Peer Review", 2022 preprint by Tony Ross-Hellauer and Serge Horbach.</p> <p>Dataset includes excel file with 10 sheets showing systematic literature search (per PRISMA-SCR protocol) of academic databases (Web of Science, Scopus), snowballing and web-search to identify 52 studies on key aspects of Open Peer Review published from Jan 2017 until May 2022.</p> <p><strong>Study Abstract: </strong>Diverse efforts are underway to reform the journal peer review system. Combined with growing interest in Open Science practices, Open Peer Review (OPR) has become of central concern to the scholarly community. However, what Open Peer Review is understood to encompass and how effective some of its elements are in meeting the expectations of the peer review system, are uncertain. This scoping review updates previous efforts to summarise research on OPR to date. Following the PRISMA methodological framework, it addresses the question: “What evidence has been reported in the scientific literature from 2017 to date regarding uptake, attitudes, and efficacy of two key aspects of Open Peer Review (Open Identities and Open Reports)?” The review identifies, analyses and synthesises 52 studies matching inclusion criteria, finding that OPR is growing, but still far from common practice. Our findings indicate positive attitudes towards Open Reports and more sceptical approaches to Open Identities. Changes in reviewer behaviour seem limited. and no evidence for lower acceptance rates of review invitations or slower turnaround times is reported. Concerns about power dynamics and potential backfiring on critical reviews are in need of further experimentation. We conclude that elements of OPR seem to be gaining acceptance, but more experimentation is needed. Evidence still mainly consists of either survey data or case studies of individual or few journals, not allowing for generalisability across fields and journals, and revealing no studies which compare the quality of review under Open Identities or Open Reports versus other modes of peer review.</p>
Data for: The combined Hf and Nd isotope evolution of the depleted mantle requires Hadean continental formation
<p>The onset and rates of continental growth are first-order indicators of early Earth dynamics, and whether substantial crust existed in the Hadean or much later has long been debated. Here we present a theoretical analysis of published Hf and Nd isotopic data representing the depleted mantle and demonstrate that continental growth must have started in the early Hadean. Whereas the traditional interpretation of depleted mantle signatures in crustal rocks assumes unrealistic instantaneous mantle mixing, our modeling incorporates the effect of a finite mixing time over which these signatures are recorded in rocks produced through mantle melting. This effect is shown to delay, by as much as 0.65 to 0.75 Gyr, the appearance of the earliest depleted mantle signatures in continental crust. Our results suggest that published observations of Hf, <sup>143</sup>Nd, and <sup>142</sup>Nd require Hadean growth of continental crust, with a minimum of 50% of today's continental volume already existing by the end of Hadean.</p>
Strategies, Benefits and Challenges App Store-inspired Requirements Elicitation - Supplementary Material
<p>This is the supplementary material for the paper "Strategies, Benefits and Challenges App Store-inspired Requirements Elicitation" (also included in this repository). </p> <p>Abstract: App store-inspired elicitation is the practice of exploring competitors’ apps, to get inspiration for requirements. This activity is common among developers, but little insight is available on its practical use, advantages, and possible issues. This paper aims to study strategies, benefits, and challenges of app store-inspired elicitation, and compare this technique with more traditional requirements elicitation interviews. We conduct an experimental simulation with 58 analysts and collect qualitative data. Our results show that specific guidelines and procedures are required to better conduct app store-inspired elicitation. Furthermore, current search features made available by app stores are not suitable for this practice, and more tool support is required to help analysts in the retrieval and<br> evaluation of competing products. While interviews focus on the why dimension of requirements engineering (i.e., goals), app store-inspired elicitation focuses on how (i.e., solutions), offering indications for implementation and improved usability. <p>In the age of digital transformation, scientific and social interest for data and data products is constantly on the rise. The quantity as well as the variety of digital research data is increasing significantly. This raises the question about the governance of this data. For example, how to store the data so that it is presented transparently, freely accessible and subsequently available for re-use in the context of good scientific practice. Research data repositories provide solutions to these issues.</p> <p>Considering the variety of repository software, it is sometimes difficult to identify a fitting solution for a specific use case. For this purpose a detailed analysis of existing software is needed. Presented table of requirements can serve as a starting point and decision-making guide for choosing the most suitable for your purposes repository software. Location Location Location: Survival of Antarctic biota requires the best real-estate
<p class="Teaser"><span>The origin of terrestrial biota in Antarctica has been debated since the discovery of springtails on the first historic voyages to the southern continent more than 120 years ago. A plausible explanation for the long-term persistence of life requiring ice-free land on continental Antarctica has, however, remained elusive. The default <em>glacial eradication</em> scenario has dominated because hypotheses to date have failed to provide a mechanism for their widespread survival on the continent, particularly through the Last Glacial Maximum when geological evidence demonstrates that the ice sheet was more extensive than present. Here, we provide support for the alternative <em>nunatak</em> <em>refuge</em> hypothesis – that ice-free terrain with sufficient relief above the ice sheet provided refuges and was a source for terrestrial biota found today. This hypothesis is supported here by an increased understanding from the combination of biological and geological evidence, and we outline a mechanism for these refuges during successive glacial maxima that also provides a source for coastal species. Our cross-disciplinary approach provides future directions to further test this hypothesis that will lead to new insights into the evolution of Antarctic landscapes and how they have shaped the biota through a changing climate.</span></p>
