PCA Filtering of Magdalena Ridge Observatory 2.4m PHOTDOC Observations of LCROSS

<p>This archive contains data products from observations of the 2009-10-09 impact of the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) spacecraft on the Moon by the PHOTDOC instrument on the Magdalena Ridge Observatory 2.4m telescope. We use principal component analysis (PCA) filtering both to coregister the raw time series and to effectively remove a static background signal that is spatially and temporally modified by atmospheric and instrumental effects. Long-term demographic data on the endangered legume Crotalaria avonensis, from Carter Creek Tract, Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife Environmental Area, 1998-2017 (ongoing)

This dataset contains demographic data from a long-term study of Crotalaria avonensis (Avon Park Harebells; Fabaceae), a federally and state endangered plant endemic to a small area on the Lake Wales Ridge, central Florida. The plant is a small perennial herbaceous legume. The dataset includes data from 1998 through 2017 from the Carter Creek Unit of the Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife Environmental Area. Data collected include survival, size, and reproductive data from individual plants located in permanent quadrats. There are also data on six fires, caging to reduce herbivory, and other events that affected plants.

Demography of the Florida endemic Eriogonum longifolium var. gnaphalifolium (Polygonaceae) at Archbold Biological Station and the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek from 1990 to 2013

We studied scrub buckwheat (Eriogonum longifolium var. gnaphalifolium) from 1990 - 2013 at Archbold Biological Station and from 2001 - 2010 at the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek. This dataset contains annual demographic data on survival, recruitment, growth and reproductive effort. The plant is long-lived and exhibits plant dormancy. It resprouts following fire and also recruits many seedlings following post-fire stimulated flowering. Modeling based on demographic data has shown that frequent fires (a minimum of every five years or every 20 years depending on assumptions) are necessary for viable populations of scrub buckwheat. This fire regime is usually met in sandhill but not always in oak-hickory scrub, another habitat for this endemic plant.

Demography of scrub plum (Prunus geniculata) at Carter Creek, Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, 2001-2013, in relation to fire and felling

At the Carter Creek unit of the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, we collected demographic data annually on scrub plum (Prunus geniculata), a federally endangered shrub. We initially selected 903 plants (tagged and GPS'd) distributed among 12 management units in February 2001, a minimum of 65 plants per management unit. We worked with United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) staff and a crew from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to impose three management treatments on a unit basis (4 replicate units) in 2001 (finishing in August): control, chain-saw felling of large oaks, and chain-saw felling followed by prescribed burns. The treatments also served as the basis for vegetation sampling and demographic research on other species (Rickey et al. 2013). Beginning in 2001 and continuing through 2008, we collected annual data (in February) on each marked plant, including survival status, life history stage, height, maximum crown diameter, and reproductive structures. We also scoured areas near plants for new seedlings. We subsampled plants from 2009-2012, and then re-censused all plants in 2013. We also noted fire severity in 2001, 2007, and 2009 in four categories for each plant. Analyses through 2007 (Menges and Weekley 2013) showed that scrub plum had extremely high annual survival (98%) but minimal seedling recruitment. Scrub plum had high survival in all four burn treatments, although severely burned plants were more likely to die. Fire benefited scrub plum as plants resprouted vigorously, increased stem numbers post-fire, and had higher flower production 2-3 years after fires. Between fires, plants increased in height and diameter but retained fewer stems. We concluded that chainsaw felling of oaks did not have strong effects on scrub plum and could be a useful management tool, but we also emphasized the primacy of fire as an ecological disturbance and management treatment in this sandhill ecosystem.

Demography of the rare herb, Polygala lewtonii (Polygalaceae), with multiple fires on the Lake Wales Ridge in south-central Florida from 2001-2017 (ongoing)

Demographic data on 5,060 individually marked plants of the endemic State and federally listed Polygala lewtonii (Lewton's milkwort; Polygalaceae) were collected from December 2001 to December 2017 at the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Carter Creek in south-central Florida, USA. Data collection is still ongoing. In 220 permanent 25 cm radius circular plots, plants were marked with plastic toothpicks and wire stake flags with a unique identification number. Data collection occurred quarterly with survival and recruitment recorded in March, June, September and December and more detailed measures of size and fecundity taken in March. This species is amphicarphic with both showy-open flowers produced in spring (chasmogamy) and closed, self-pollinating flowers both above- and belowground produced in late summer (cleistogamy). Therefore, our fecundity data are based only on chasmogamy. This dataset also captures post-fire mortality and recruitment events following four prescribed burns.

Subsurface Temperature Data from Seven Rock Glaciers in Rocky Mountain National Park and Niwot Ridge LTER, Colorado, USA, 2018-2019

HOBO temperature-sensing data loggers (hereafter, sensors) were placed under the surface of seven rock glaciers predicted to have the presence (n=4) or absence (n=3) of sub-surface ice in Rocky Mountain National Park and near Niwot Ridge Long-term Ecological Research site in Colorado. Sub-surface temperatures were recorded to evaluate habitat differences among American pika populations. All sensors (model H08 pro, H08, or H02; Onset Computer Corporation, onsetcomp.com) recorded temperature (±0.2° Celsius) every one or two hours for one year starting in September 2018. Each rock glacier received at least one sensor, positioned near the center and near pika sign. Three rock glaciers received an additional sensor positioned near the edge of the rock glacier near pika sign. Sensors were placed at similar depths (~0.75 m) and similar aspects.

Stem temperature in watershed 02, ridge plot at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory from 1996 to 1998

Tree stem temperature is currently being collected to determine both diurnal and seasonal variation in tree stem temperatures for all species and sizes present at the Coweeta Watershed 2 Ridge Carbon Flux Plot. The purpose of the data is to characterize the tree stem temperature regimes as they relate to tree stem respiration. Data will continue to be collected until approximately December 1997. Data will then be subsequently summarized and published.

Multi-millennial Record of Erosion and Fires in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, USA

Bottomland sediments from the southern Blue Ridge Mountains provide a coarse-resolution, multi-millennial stratigraphic record of past regional forest disturbance (soil erosion). This record is represented by 12 separate vertical accretion stratigraphic profiles that have been dated by radiocarbon, luminescence, cesium-137, and correlation methods continuously spanning the past 3,000 years of pre-settlement (pre-dating widespread European American settlement) and postsettlement strata. Post-settlement vertical accretion began in the late 1800s, appears to be about an order of magnitude faster than pre-settlement rates, and is attributable to widespread deforestation for timber harvest, farming, housing development, and other erosive activities of people. Natural, climate-driven, or non-anthropic forest disturbance is subtle and difficult to recognize in pre-settlement deposits. There is no indication that pre-settlement Mississippian and Cherokee agricultural activities accelerated erosion and sedimentation in the region. A continuous 11,244 years before present (BP) vertical accretion record from a meander scar in the Upper Little Tennessee River valley indicates abundant charcoal (prevalent fires) at the very beginning of the Holocene (11,244-10,900 years BP). In contrast, moderate to very low levels of charcoal are apparent over the remaining Holocene until about 2,400 years BP when charcoal influx registers a pronounced increase. These data are consistent with the idea that Native Americans used fire extensively to manage forests and to expanded agricultural activities during Woodland and later cultural periods over the past 3000 years. However, there is no indication that prehistoric intentional use of fire and agriculture caused accelerated erosion and sedimentation.

Soil microarthropod density data for saddle snowfence and S slope of Niwot Ridge, 1992 - 1993.

These data were used in this publication: O'Lear, H.A., and T.R. Seastedt. 1994. Landscape patterns of litter decomposition in alpine tundra. Oecologia 99: 95-101. doi: 10.1007/BF00317088 Microarthropod densities in the upper 5 cm of soil were estimated for different alpine communities on Niwot Ridge in the Front Range of Colorado. Densitites were higher than previously reported and averaged 111,200 individualsgm2. Acari dominated this group and composed 80-90% of the fauna; Collembola composed an average of 15%. Oribatid mites composed 23-58% of total densities, while Prostigmatid mites composed 32-54%. The relative abundance of the Oribatid and Prostigmatid mites varied significantly across the landscape, with Prostigmatids more abundant in the xeric sites. Composition of the detritus-based food web appear to change substantially across the snow depth gradient found in the alpine tundra. Fungal root endophytes colonization of moist meadow forbs in 2017 at Niwot Ridge LTER site

Fungal root endophytes play an important role in plant nutrition, helping plants acquire nutrients in exchange for photosynthates. We sought to characterize the progression of root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), dark septate endophytes (DSE), and fine root endophytes (FRE) over an alpine growing season, and to understand the role of the host plant and environment in driving colonization levels. We sampled four forbs on a regular schedule from June 26th – September 11th from a moist meadow (3535 m.a.s.l) on Niwot Ridge, Rocky Mountain Front Range, Colorado, USA. We quantified the degree of root colonization by storage structures, exchange structures, and hyphae of all three groups of fungi. AMF and FRE percent colonization fluctuated significantly over time, while DSE did not. All AMF structures changed over time, and the degree of change in vesicles differed by plant species. FRE hyphae, AMF arbuscules and AMF vesicles peaked late in the season as plants produced seeds. AMF hyphae levels started high, decreased, and then increased within 20 days, highlighting the dynamic nature of plant-fungal interactions. Overall, our results show that AMF and FRE, not DSE, root colonization rapidly changes over the course of a growing season and these changes are driven by plant phenology and seasonal changes in the environment.
