Cast Bell, Santa Fiora, Tuscany

A cast bronze bell located in the townhall of Santa Fiora, Grosseto, Tuscany. The bell was made for the use of local municipal council in 1589 by the earl Mario I Sforza and shows a number of decorative plaquettes including one depicting the local saint protectors Flora and Lucilla. The Latin dedicatory inscription reads: "COMUNITAS SANCTE FLORE AUSPICE ILLUST. MARIO COMITE F.C. AD MDLXXXIX". [source C. Benocci, 2016] Model was created in Reality Capture using 266 photographs. The Mt. Amiata Project is an ongoing GDH collaboration involving faculty and students at the University of Florence and the University of Siena. Data from: Complex histories of repeated gene flow in Cameroon crater lake cichlids cast doubt on one of the clearest examples of sympatric speciation

One of the most celebrated examples of sympatric speciation in nature are monophyletic radiations of cichlid fishes endemic to Cameroon crater lakes. However, phylogenetic inference of monophyly may not detect complex colonization histories involving some allopatric isolation, such as double invasions obscured by genome-wide gene flow. Population genomic approaches are better suited to test hypotheses of sympatric speciation in these cases. Here we use comprehensive sampling from all four sympatric crater lake cichlid radiations in Cameroon and outgroups across Africa combined with next-generation sequencing to genotype tens of thousands of SNPs. We find considerable evidence of gene flow between all four radiations and neighboring riverine populations after initial colonization. In a few cases, some sympatric species are more closely related to outgroups than others, consistent with secondary gene flow facilitating their speciation. Our results do not rule out sympatric speciation in Cameroon cichlids, but rather reveal a complex history of speciation with gene flow, including allopatric and sympatric phases, resulting in both reproductively isolated species and incipient species complexes. The best remaining non-cichlid examples of sympatric speciation all involve assortative mating within microhabitats. We speculate that this feature may be necessary to complete the process of sympatric speciation in nature.

Antennal sensilla of soldier and worker castes of the termite species Odontotermes parvidens (Termitidae: Isoptera: Blattaria) - Raw data

<p><em>Odontotermes parvidens</em> is a commonly found vicious pest species of termite which primarily feed on diverse cellulosic sources. In termites, communication among the nest mates is the basis of all their daily activities and the sensory structures present on the sensory appendages play a crucial role in different social behaviors perceiving and processing various signals of the &nbsp;nest mates and external environments. So, it is essential to understand in details about their sensory structures in order to understand the sensory system of the species <em>O. parvidens.</em> Thus, we have studied the antenna which is one of the primary sensory appendages of both soldier and worker individuals of the species to elucidate various antennal sensory structures and their distribution using scanning electron microscopy. Based on the ultrastructural features of various sensilla, we observed eight types of sensilla as sensilla Chaetica (subtypes I, II, III and IV), sensilla Trichodea (subtypes I and II), sensilla Trichodea Curvata (Subtypes I and II), sensilla Basiconica, sensilla Capitula, Bohm Bristles, sensilla Campaniformia (subtypes I and II) and sensilla Ampullacea on the antenna of soldier and worker castes. We have also discussed the putative functions of all the sensilla observed based on their ultrastructural and distributional characteristics on the antenna of soldier and worker castes of the species <em>O. parvidens</em>.</p>
