Tidal datum conversion grids for the Eastern Shore of Virginia and surrounding waters (2013)

Data consists of conversion factors that can be used to convert between numerous vertical tidal datums and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). The data cover the Eastern Shore of Virginia and parts of southeastern Maryland along with the surrounding coastal waters and are represented as approximately 100m (100.584m) resolution grids. The six included tidal datums are local mean sea level (LMSL), mean tidal level (MTL), mean low water (MLW), mean lower low water (MLLW), mean high water (MHW), and mean higher high water (MHHW). All vertical units are in meters. By combining multiple conversions to and from NAVD88, conversion between the various tidal datums is possible. Two versions of the conversion factor grids are provided for each NAVD88-to-tidal-datum pairing: one that only contains data for areas not masked as nodata by the NOAA VDatum program (original source data) and one that contains both the original and interpolated data (see below for details). Naming conventions used were "cfactor_DDD" for the original VDatum-detrived dataset where "DDD" is the local tidal datum and "cf_nd_DDD" for the dataset that includes interpolated values within the nodata masks (IDW interpolation across masked areas, typically upland regions but also shallow seaside bays and creeks for which no adequate tidal benchmarks were available). By definition, the baseline elevation (sea level or 0.0m elevation) for NAVD88 is referenced to the fixed International Great Lakes Datum of 1985 local mean sea level height value, at Rimouski, Quebec, Canada. Additional tidal bench mark elevations were not used to calculate NAVD88 due to the demonstrated variations in sea surface topography, i.e., the fact that mean sea level is not the same equipotential surface at all tidal benchmarks. The magnitude of the difference between local mean sea level (LMSL) at the tidal benchmarks of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the NAVD88 defined sea-level varies from 0.039 to 0.149 meters BELOW

Both discharge contraction and turbulent transport have a significant impact on the plasma processing conditions, but are, nevertheless, poorly understood. This work combines experiments and modeling to investigate how these aspects influence the CO production and destruction mechanisms in the vortex-stabilized CO2 microwave plasma reactor. For this, a two-dimensional axisymmetric tubular chemical kinetics model of the reactor is developed, with careful consideration of the non-uniform nature of the plasma and the vortex-induced radial turbulent transport. Energy efficiency and conversion of the dissociation process show a good agreement with the numerical results over a broad pressure range from 80 - 600mbar. The occurrence of an energy efficiency peak between 100 - 200 mbar is associated with a discharge mode transition. The net CO production rate is inhibited at low pressure by the plasma temperature, while recombination of CO back to CO2 dominates at high pressure. Turbulence-induced cooling and dilution of plasma products limit the extent of the latter. The maxima in energy efficiency observed experimentally around 40% are related to limits imposed by production and recombination processes. Data from: Litter conversion into detritivore faeces reshuffles the quality control over C and N dynamics during decomposition

1. In many terrestrial ecosystems, detritivorous soil organisms ingest large amounts of leaf litter returning most of it to the soil as faeces. Such conversion of leaf litter into faeces may stimulate decomposition by increasing the surface area available for microbial colonization. Yet, experimental support for either the outcome or the mechanism of these conversion effects is lacking. 2. Based on the hypothesis that the identity of plant species from which leaf litter is transformed into faeces has a critical role in how faeces decomposition proceeds, we collected faeces of the widely abundant millipede Glomeris marginata fed with leaf litter from seven distinct tree species. We compared the physical and chemical characteristics and the rates of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) loss between litter and faeces. 3. We found that after 100 days of exposure under controlled conditions, C loss was on average higher in faeces (40%) than in litter (26.6%), with a significant increase for six out of the seven species. Concurrently, N dynamics switched from a net immobilisation (7.7%) in litter to a net release (14.6%) in faeces, with a significant increase for five out of the seven species. 4. Litter conversion into faeces generally homogenised differences in physical and chemical characteristics among species. Despite such homogenisation, variability in rates of faeces C and N loss among species was similar compared to leaf litter, but correlated with a different set of traits. Specifically, faecal pellet C loss was positively related to compaction (decreased specific area and increased density of faecal pellets), and both C and N loss from faecal pellets were positively related to fragmentation (increased specific area and perimeter of particles within faecal pellets). 5. We conclude that litter fragmentation and compaction into detritivore faecal pellets leads to substantially enhanced decomposition, with a particularly strong impact on N dynamics that changed from immobilisation to net release depending on litter species. Moreover, litter quality control on decomposition is reshuffled by litter conversion into faeces. In ecosystems with high detritivore abundance, this so far largely overlooked pathway of organic matter turnover may strongly affect ecosystem C and N cycling.
