Qualitative Event-based Diagnosis with Possible Conflicts Applied to Spacecraft Power Distribution Systems
Model-based diagnosis enables efficient and safe operation of engineered systems. In this paper, we describe two algorithms based on a qualitative event-based fault isolation framework augmented with model-based fault identification that are applied to spacecraft power distribution systems. Although based on a common framework, the fundamental difference between the two algorithms is that one uses a global model for residual generation, fault isolation, and fault identification; whereas the other uses a set of minimal submodels computed using Possible Conflicts. We describe the implementation of the two algorithms and compare their diagnosis results on a representative spacecraft power distribution system.
Distributed Decision-Tree Induction in Peer-to-Peer Systems
This paper offers a scalable and robust distributed algorithm for decision-tree induction in large peer-to-peer (P2P) environments. Computing a decision tree in such large distributed systems using standard centralized algorithms can be very communication-expensive and impractical because of the synchronization requirements. The problem becomes even more challenging in the distributed stream monitoring scenario where the decision tree needs to be updated in response to changes in the data distribution. This paper presents an alternate solution that works in a completely asynchronous manner in distributed environments and offers low communication overhead, a necessity for scalability. It also seamlessly handles changes in data and peer failures. The paper presents extensive experimental results to corroborate the theoretical claims.
A Distributed Approach to System-Level Prognostics
Prognostics, which deals with predicting remaining useful life of components, subsystems, and systems, is a key tech- nology for systems health management that leads to improved safety and reliability with reduced costs. The prognostics problem is often approached from a component-centric view. However, in most cases, it is not specifically component life- times that are important, but, rather, the lifetimes of the sys- tems in which these components reside. The system-level prognostics problem can be quite difficult due to the increased scale and scope of the prognostics problem and the rela- tive lack of scalability and efficiency of typical prognostics approaches. In order to address these issues, we develop a distributed solution to the system-level prognostics prob- lem, based on the concept of structural model decomposi- tion. The system model is decomposed into independent submodels. Independent local prognostics subproblems are then formed based on these local submodels, resulting in a scalable, efficient, and flexible distributed approach to the system-level prognostics problem. We provide a formulation of the system-level prognostics problem and demonstrate the approach on a four-wheeled rover simulation testbed. The re- sults show that the system-level prognostics problem can be accurately and efficiently solved in a distributed fashion.

PADMINI: A PEER-TO-PEER DISTRIBUTED ASTRONOMY DATA MINING SYSTEM AND A CASE STUDY TUSHAR MAHULE*, KIRK BORNE**, SANDIPAN DEY*, SUGANDHA ARORA*, AND HILLOL KARGUPTA*** Abstract. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are appealing for astronomy data mining from virtual observatories because of the large volume of the data, compute-intensive tasks, potentially large number of users, and distributed nature of the data analysis process. This paper offers a brief overview of PADMINI—a Peer-to-Peer Astronomy Data MINIng system. It also presents a case study on PADMINI for distributed outlier detection using astronomy data. PADMINI is a webbased system powered by Google Sky and distributed data mining algorithms that run on a collection of computing nodes. This paper offers a case study of the PADMINI evaluating the architecture and the performance of the overall system. Detailed experimental results are presented in order to document the utility and scalability of the system.
