Measurement of Absolute Retinal Blood Flow Using a Laser Doppler Velocimeter Combined with Adaptive Optics
<p><strong>Data set of measurements related to the following:</strong></p> <p><strong>Purpose: </strong>Development and validation of an absolute laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) based on an adaptive optical fundus camera which provides simultaneously high definition images of the fundus vessels and absolute maximal red blood cells (RBCs) velocity in order to calculate the absolute retinal blood flow.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>This new absolute laser Doppler velocimeter is combined with the adaptive optics fundus camera (rtx1, Imagine Eyes©,Orsay, France) outside its optical wavefront correction path. A 4 seconds recording includes 40 images, each synchronized with two Doppler shift power spectra. Image analysis provides the vessel diameter close to the probing beam and the velocity of the RBCs in the vessels are extracted from the Doppler spectral analysis. Combination of those values gives an average of the absolute retinal blood flow. An in vitro experiment consisting of latex microspheres flowing in water through a glass-capillary to simulate a blood vessel and in vivo measurements on six healthy human retinal venous junctions were done to assess the device.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>In the in vitro experiment, the calculated flow varied between 1.75 μl/min and 25.9 μl/min and was highly correlated (r2 = 0.995) with the imposed flow by a syringe pump. In the in vivo experiment, the error between the flow in the parent vessel and the sum of the flow in the daughter vessels was between −25% and 17% (mean±sd −2 ± 17%). Retinal blood flow in the main temporal retinal veins of healthy subjects varied between 1.3 μL/min and 28.7 μL/min</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>This adaptive optics LDV prototype (aoLDV) allows the measurement of absolute retinal blood flow derived from the retinal vessel diameter and the maximum RBCs velocity in that vessel.</p>

The diurnal cycle of the horizontal wind field over complex terrain detected with coplanar Doppler lidar scans
<p>This data set contains a 24-h movie (21:00 UTC 23 July to 21:00 UTC 24 July) of the horizontal wind field in a horizontal plane of about 5 km x 5 km in size about 62 m above the city of Stuttgart in south-western Germany. The horizontal wind fields are retrieved from coplanar horizontal scans from three Doppler lidars positioned on opposing slopes and are available with 1-min temporal resolution and 100 m horizontal resolution. The data shows the diurnal cycle of the horizontal wind. During nighttime, downvalley wind establishes in the Neckar Valley and during daytime convective cells moving downstream are visible.<br> The measurements were conducted within the the framework of the Urban Climate under Change [UC]^2 program.</p>
Data from: A reliability study of colour-Doppler sonography for the diagnosis of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency shows low inter-rater agreement
Objective: Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) has been extremely variable associated with multiple sclerosis in color-Doppler sonographic studies. We aimed to evaluate inter-rater agreement in color doppler sonograpy venous examination. Design: Inter-rater agreement study. Setting: First-referral multiple sclerosis centre. Participants: thirty-eight multiple sclerosis patients, and 55 age-matched (± 5 years) controls. Intervention: sonography was carried out in accordance with Zamboni's five criteria by 8 sonographers with different expertise, blinded to the status of cases and controls. Each subject was evaluated by two operators. Primary and secondary outcome measures: inter-rater agreement was measured through the Kappa statistics and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. Results: The agreement was no higher than chance for criterion 2-reflux in the deep cerebral veins (Kappa=-0.02) and 4-flow not Doppler-detectable in one or both the internal jugular (IJVs) or vertebral veins (VVs) (-0.09). It was substantially low for criterion 1-reflux in the IJVs and/or VVs (0.29), criterion 3-IJV stenosis or malformations (0.23), and criterion 5-absence of IJV diameter increase when passing from sitting to supine position (0.22). The Kappa value for CCSVI as a whole was 0.20 (95% confidence limits=-0.01 - 0.42). Intraclass Correlation Coefficients for the measure of cross-sectional area ranged from 0.05 to 0.25. Inter-rater agreement was low for CCSVI experts (kappa= 0.24; -0.11 to 0.59), and non-experts (0.20; -0.33 to 0.73); neurologists (0.21; -0.06 to 0.47) and non neurologists (0.18; -0.20 to 0.56); cases (0.19; -0.14 to 0.52) and controls (0.21; -0.08 to 0.49). Zamboni-trained neurosonographers ascertained CCSVI more frequently than non-trained. Conclusions: Agreement was unsatisfactory for the diagnosis of CCSVI as a whole, for each of its five criteria, and according to different subgroups. Standardization of the method is urgently needed prior to its further application in studies of patients with multiple sclerosis or other neurological diseases.
Data from: Combination of shear-wave elastography and color Doppler: feasible method to avoid unnecessary breast excision of fibroepithelial lesions diagnosed by core needle biopsy
Background: We evaluated shear-wave elastography (SWE) and color Doppler ultrasonography (US) features for fibroepithelial lesions (FELs), and to evaluate their utility to differentiate fibroadenomas (FAs) and phyllodes tumors (PTs). Methods: This retrospective study included 67 FELs pathologically confirmed (49 FAs, 18 PTs). B-mode US, SWE and color Doppler US were performed for each lesion. Mean elasticity (Emean), maximum elasticity (Emax), and vascularity were determined by SWE and Doppler US. Diagnostic performances were calculated to differentiate FAs and PTs. Equivocal FELs diagnosed by core needle biopsy (CNB) were further analyzed. Results: Median Emean and Emax were significantly lower for FAs than PTs (Emean, 15.7 vs. 66.7 kPa; Emax, 21.0 vs. 76.7 kPa, P<0.01). Low vascularity (0-1 vessel flow) on color Doppler US were more frequent in FAs than in PTs (P<0.01). SWE showed significantly higher specificities (Emean >43.9 kPa, 89.8%; Emax >46.1 kPa, 79.6%) than B-mode US (42.9%) (P<0.01) for differentiating PTs from FAs. Other diagnostic values of SWE and overall diagnostic values of Doppler US were not significantly different from B-mode US (P>0.05). The combination of SWE and Doppler US with 'Emean>43.9 kPa or high vascularity (≥2 vessel flows)' showed a higher area under the curve (0.786 vs. 0.687) and higher diagnostic values than B-mode US (sensitivity, 100 vs. 94.4 %; specificity, 57.1 vs. 42.9 %; positive predictive value, 46.2 vs. 37.8 %; negative predictive value, 100 vs. 95.5 %), without statistical significance (P>0.05). Of the 30 equivocal FELs, all lesions with 'Emean≤43.9 kPa and low vascularity (0-1 vessel flow)' (23.3%, 7/30) were finally confirmed as FAs by excision. Conclusion: FAs have a tendency to have less stiffness and lower vascularity than PTs. Combined SWE and color Doppler US may help patients with equivocal FELs diagnosed by CNB avoid unnecessary excision.

<p>This is data set includes Doppler wind lidar measurements performed between 14/06/2023 and 03/07/2023 at the rooftop of IPPT PAN (Warsaw, Poland; 52.2067ºN, 20.9811ºE, 134 m a.s.l.) in the framework of PURER-EXP campaign (Polish NCN, PURER-SENS project 2021/40/C/ST10/00023).</p> <p>The system Abrego is a Doppler lidar Stream Line (Halo Photonics), belonging to PI Lucas Alados-Arboledas from the University of Granada (Spain), which is part of ACTRIS-Cloudnet (Illingworth et al., 2007). The system laser emits at 1.5 μm and the detector is heterodyne using fiber-optic technology. The measurements for this data set consisted of continuous vertical measurements with a resolution of 30 m and 1 s in space and time, interrupted by step-stare conical scans with constant elevation of 70° and 12 equidistant azimuth points performed every 30 min, followed by continuous-mode conical sector scans with an elevation of 70° and azimuth angle resolution of 0.88°, and continuous-mode RHI scan with an azimuth of 12.8° and elevation angle resolution of 0.89°.</p> <p> For more details about the campaign and the measurements please contact P.
