The elevated mist-net frame - Supporting Information: Appendices S1-S4
<p><b>Summary<b> </b></b></p> <ol> <li><span><span><span>Classic standard mist-netting limits sampling to understory birds flying <3 m above ground-level. Methodological innovations targeting higher strata birds (and bats) are important for ecological studies, particularly in tropical forests.</span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>I present and evaluate a method of applying elevated mist-net frames (EMF) up to ~25-30 m. I designed detachable mobile alloy frames for standard-sized 3×6 m mist-nets, weighing ~11 kg including fittings, and suspended by 3-point cable-wire mounting. State-of-the-art archery and fishing gear are employed for securing anchor-lines, with hoisting applied by pulley, ropes and guys. </span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>EMF is assembled and detached by 2-3 team members within 15-20 minutes, and up-down hoisting lasts 1-3 minutes. EMF excludes tree-climbing and arboreal platforms, through versatile manoeuvring in lightly-cluttered naturally open corridors. EMF costs are source and quantity dependent, and feasible to institutions and grant beneficiaries. </span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>EMF is a workable alternative or supplement to existing elevated mist-netting applying poles, ropes and pulleys, owing to strength and durability, replicable construction, and versatile manoeuvrability in upper strata. Data from: Assortative mating frames establishment in a young island bird population
Successful island colonizations are key events to understand range dynamic processes, but studying a young population right after it reaches establishment is a rare opportunity in natural systems. However, the genetic structure of a recently established population may offer unique insights into its colonization history and demographic processes important for a successful colonization. Here, we studied the population genetics of a recently established island population of Eurasian blackbirds (Aves: Turdus merula) located on the island of Heligoland in the German North Sea. Using microsatellites, we genotyped the majority of the island population, including the nestlings, over a four-year period between 2004 and 2007. We also genotyped high numbers of migrants on stopover and mainland individuals, as they are potential founders of the island population. We identified two genetic clusters that comply with the migrating and mainland birds respectively. While most of the island birds belong to the mainland cluster, some breeding individuals and a low fraction of the offspring belong to the genetic cluster found in migrating individuals with almost no admixture between the two, pointing to assortative mating acting on the island population. We did not find any evidence for founder events and detected deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium that disappeared in cohorts of older age that coincide with a lower number of siblings in older cohorts. The observed genetic patterns unravel a complex colonization history to which migratory and mainland birds have contributed and which is characterized by assortative mating. Further research will be directed towards habitat selection and phenotypic differences as potential drivers of assortative mating in this island population.

Reduced Gun Violence Frame Corpus data set for the Text2Story 2024 article: "Evaluating the Ability of Computationally Extracted Narrative Maps to Encode Media Framing"
<p><strong>Title: </strong>Simplified Gun Violence Frame Corpus (GVFC) Subset</p> <p><strong>Description:</strong><br>This data set is a simplified subset of the Gun Violence Frame Corpus (GVFC) from Liu et al. (2019). The original GVFC consists of 1300 news articles in English from multiple U.S. based sources extracted during the year 2018, focusing on media frames commonly used when reporting the issue of Gun Violence. The original data set has 9 types of frames, including both issue-specific and generic frames. Due to high computational costs in our analysis methods, we decreased the data set size from 1300 articles to 131 articles using stratified sampling, maintaining the original distribution of the frame labels. We also manually searched for the original sources of each article based on its headline and added the missing temporal information and news source to the data set, as it was required by our algorithms.</p> <p>To further reduce the complexity of the framing model and account for the smaller data set size, we grouped the original nine frames into three higher-level frames:</p> <p>1. Frame 1: Political Issues - Combining the first, second, and third frames, which focus on political issues mostly related to gun control.<br>2. Frame 2: Public Services - Combining the fourth and fifth frames, which focus on mental healthcare issues, as well as school and public safety.<br>3. Frame 3: Cultural and Societal Issues - Combining the last four frames, which are oriented towards cultural or societal issues, including discussions around race and ethnicity, public opinion, and economic consequences.</p> <p>The resulting simplified data set contains 131 news articles, each labeled with one of the three higher-level frames, along with the necessary temporal information and news source for the narrative extraction process.</p> <p>If you use this data set, please make sure to cite the original GVFC paper and our workshop paper please. </p> <p><strong>References:</strong></p> <ol> <li>Liu et al. Technological frames scales used in SEM analysis on AI adoption
<h3><span>Paper title this data set accompanies (submitted for peer review) </span></h3> <p><strong><span>Cognitive frames that drive AI adoption</span></strong></p> <h3><span>Paper Abstract</span></h3> <p><span>We investigate the role of cognitive frames in the adoption of artificial intelligence in the workplace. We propose a theoretical model of a three-level hierarchy of AI adoption that distinguishes between acceptance, collaboration, and co-creation. Each level represents higher levels of sophistication in human involvement in working with AI, ranging from passive utilitarian acceptance to active collaboration and co-creation. Using reasoning from technological frames of reference theory, we tested a structural model connecting individual cognitive frames to AI adoption. We developed a structural equation model that analyzed data collected from a sample of 305 professionals in Europe who have a high usage of technology in the workplace. Our results show the model exhibits high goodness of fit and predictive relevance. The work contributes to a greater understanding of the role of cognitive frames in driving the behavioural intention of adopting increasingly sophisticated AI technologies.</span></p> <h3><span>Grant Information</span></h3> <p><span>This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 101023024 for <em>Augmented-Humans</em>. </span></p>

Early onset of adult deafness in the Rhodesian Ridgeback is associated with in-frame deletion in the EPS8L2 gene
<p>Domestic dogs exhibit diverse types of both congenital and non-congenital hearing losses. Rhodesian Ridgebacks can suffer from a progressive hearing loss in the early stage of their life, a condition known as early onset of adult deafness (EOAD), where they lose their hearing ability within 1-2 years after birth. In order to investigate the genetic basis of this hereditary hearing disorders, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) by using a sample of 23 affected and 162 control Rhodesian Ridgebacks. We identified a genomic region on canine chromosome 18 (CFA18) that is strongly associated with EOAD, and our subsequent targeted Sanger sequencing analysis identified a 12-bp inframe deletion in EPS8L2 (CFA18:25,868,739-25,868,751 in the UMICH_Zoey_3.1/canFam5 reference genome build). Additional genotyping confirmed a strong association between the 12-bp deletion and EOAD, where all affected dogs were homozygous for the deletion, while none of the control dogs was a deletion homozygote. A segregation pattern of this deletion in a 2-generation nuclear family indicated an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Since EPS8L2 plays a critical role in the maintenance and integrity of the inner ear hair cells in humans and other mammals, the inframe deletion found in this study represents a strong candidate causal mutation for EOAD in Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Genetic and clinical similarities between childhood deafness in humans and EOAD in Rhodesian Ridgebacks emphasizes the potential value of this dog breed in translational research in hereditary hearing disorders.</p>
Data from: Mycorrhizal symbiosis pathway and edaphic fertility frame root economics space among tree species
<p><span>The root economics space (RES) is multidimensional and largely shaped by belowground biotic and abiotic influences. However, how root-fungal symbioses and edaphic fertility drive this complexity remains unclear. </span></p> <p><span>Here, we measured absorptive root traits of 112 tree species in temperate and subtropical forests of China, including traits linked to functional differences between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) hosts. </span></p> <p><span>Our data, from known mycorrhizal tree species, revealed a 'fungal-symbiosis' dimension distinguishing AM from ECM species. This divergence likely resulted from the contrasting mycorrhizal evolutionary development of AM versus ECM associations. Increased root tissue cortical space facilitates AM symbiosis, whereas increased root branching favors ECM symbiosis. Irrespective of mycorrhizal type, a 'root-lifespan' dimension reflecting aspects of root construction cost and defense was controlled by variation in specific root length and root tissue density, which was fully independent of root nitrogen content. Within this function-based RES, we observed a substantial covariation of axes with soil phosphorus and nitrate levels, highlighting the role played by these two axes in nutrient acquisition and conservation. </span></p> <p><span>Overall, our findings demonstrate the importance of</span><span> evolved mycorrhizal symbiosis pathway and edaphic fertility in framing the </span><span>RES</span><span>, and</span> <span>provide theoretical and mechanistic insights into the complexity of root economics.</span></p>
