Data from: Fuel for the pace of life: baseline blood glucose concentration coevolves with life history traits in songbirds

1. It has been proposed that life histories have coevolved with a suite of physiological and behavioural adaptations, termed pace-of-life syndromes (POLS). Here, we hypothesise that basal concentration of blood glucose (G0), a major source of energy circulating in vertebrate blood, may constitute a key component of POLS. 2. To test this hypothesis, we measured G0 in 30 passerine species and tested its covariation with body mass and other life history traits. Importantly, body mass is a major life history determinant and, when its effect is controlled for, there may be no single fast-slow life history continuum in birds comprising both fecundity and lifespan. Hence, we used individual life history traits, rather than principal component analysis, to characterise life history variation in our analysis. 3. In support of G0 life history coevolution, we found G0 to be negatively correlated with body mass and positively with reproductive investment in a single clutch across 30 passerine species. Higher G0 in females suggests that the energy demands of clutch production and incubation may be an important selection force driving coevolution of G0 with reproductive output. 4. In contrast, G0 was not associated with maximum lifespan, suggesting that high G0 may not constrain evolution of longevity. This implies that long-lived species can evolve physiological adaptations preventing harmful effects of high glucose concentrations, known to cause pathologies and accelerate ageing. 5. In addition, G0, but not basal metabolic rate (BMR), was negatively correlated with migration distance, attesting to evolutionary changes in energy metabolism in long distance migrants. Our results further suggest that the links between body mass, reproduction and G0 are not mediated by BMR and that G0 is associated with fast-slow life history variation more closely than available BMR data. 6. A species life history is determined to a great extent by body mass. When this effect is controlled for, only those traits related to reproduction (but not lifespan) constitute the principal axis of life history variation in birds. Hence, the coevolution of G0 with body mass and reproductive output evidenced in our study indicates that G0 constitutes an important physiological component of POLS.

Rainwater-driven microbial fuel cells for power generation in the remote areas' raw data

<p>The possibility of utilizing rainwater as a sustainable anolyte in an air-cathode microbial fuel cell is investigated in this study. The results indicate that the proposed microbial fuel cell can work within a wide temperature range (from 0 to 30 oC), and under aerobic or anaerobic conditions. However, the rainwater season has a distinct impact. Under anaerobic conditions, the summer rainwater achieves a promised open circuit potential of 553±2 mV without addition of nutrients at the ambient temperature, while addition of nutrients leads to increase the cell voltage to 763±3 and 588±2 mV at 30 oC and ambient temperature, respectively. The maximum open circuit potential for the winter rainwater (492±1.5 mV) is obtained when the reactor is exposed to the air (aerobic conditions) at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the winter rainwater microbial fuel cell generates a maximum power output of 7±0.1 mWm-2 at a corresponding current density value of 44±0.7 mAm-2 at 30 oC. While, at the ambient temperature, the maximum output power is obtained with the summer rainwater (7.2±0.1 mWm-2 at 26±0.5 mAm-2). Moreover, investigation of the bacterial diversity indicates that lactobacillus sp. is the dominant electroactive genus in the summer rainwater, while in the winter rainwater, Staphylococcus sp. is the main electroactive bacteria. The cyclic voltammetry analysis confirms that the electrons are delivered directly from the bacterial biofilm to the anode surface and without mediators. Overall, the study opens a new avenue for utilizing a novel sustainable type of microbial fuel cell derived by rainwater.</p>

Autumn fueling behavior in passerines in relation to migratory distance and day length

<p>Songbirds have evolved diverse strategies to cope with seasonality, including long-, medium-, and short-distance migration. There is some evidence that birds with a longer migration distance deposit fuel faster. However, most studies focus on long-distance migrants. Comparisons between species with different migration distances are necessary to broaden our understanding of fueling capacity in migratory birds. We present maximum fuel deposition rates of five songbird species migrating along the southeast coast of Sweden in autumn with migration distances ranging from long (neotropical migrant) to short (partial/irruptive migrant) (Willow Warbler <em>P</em>. <em>trochilus</em>, Lesser Whitethroat <em>Curruca</em> <em>curruca</em>, Common Chiffchaff <em>Phylloscopus</em> <em>collybita</em>, European Robin <em>Erithacus</em> <em>rubecula</em>, and Blue Tit <em>Cyanistes</em> <em>caeruleus</em>). The birds were fed ad libitum in captivity and were exposed to either extended or natural daylength. All species ceased to increase in mass when they reached a certain fuel load, generally corresponding to migration distance, despite unlimited access to food and ample time for foraging. Blue Tits, Willow Warblers, and Lesser Whitethroats had the highest fuel deposition rates with extended daylength (19%, 20%, and 20%, respectively), and about 13% with natural daylength, which is comparable to the highest rates found in migratory songbirds in nature. European Robins and Common Chiffchaffs that winter in the temperate Mediterranean had the lowest fuel deposition rates (12% and 12% with extended daylength, respectively). Our results suggest that the long- and short-distance migrants in this study have developed an extreme capacity for rapid refueling for different reasons; speedy migration to distant wintering grounds or winter survival in Scandinavia. This study contributes to our current knowledge of maximum fuel deposition rates in different species and the limitations posed by daylength. We highlight the need for future studies of species with different migration strategies in order to draw broad conclusions about fueling strategies of migratory birds.</p>

The data are part of a study, which investigates how soil microbial carbon cycling affects soil formation especially in the critical zone by understanding the carbon source of microbial activity in deep soil. Perovskite modified catalysts with improved coke resistance for steam reforming of glycerol to renewable hydrogen fuel

<p>Catalytic steam reforming of renewable<span> feedstock to renewable energy or chemicals always goes with intense coking activities that produce carbonaceous products leading to low performance and eventual catalyst deactivation. A supported</span> metal catalyst such as Ni/Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> is known to catalyse gasification and decomposition of biomass feedstock largely for renewable fuel production with promising results. Catalyst deactivation from high carbon deposition, agglomeration, and phase transformations resulting in rapid deactivation are some of the issues identified with the use of the catalyst. In this work, improvement on the coke resistance and catalytic properties of the Ni/Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> catalyst is sought via the use of a thermally stable and coke-resistant perovskite La<sub>0.75</sub>Sr<sub>0.25</sub>Cr<sub>0.5</sub>Mn<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>3-δ</sub> (LSCM) as catalyst promoter/modifier and involving Zirconia-doped Ceria (Ce-Zr) as alternative support in steam reforming of pure and by-product glycerol. The stabilizing influence of the LSCM on the Ni catalyst has improved stability against agents of deactivation with a significant improvement of catalytic activity of Ni/Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> in H<sub>2</sub> production and robust suppression of carbon deposition. Particularly, the synergy between the LSCM promoter and alternative Ce<sub>0.75</sub>Zr<sub>0.25</sub>O<sub>2</sub> support enhanced the basic and redox properties known for Ce<sub>0.75</sub>Zr<sub>0.25</sub>O<sub>2</sub> support in contrast to the weak acid centres in the γ-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> support which further improved nickel stability, catalyst-support interaction with a resultant high catalytic activity, and robust coke suppression as a result of enhanced oxygen mobility. There is a correlation between the product distribution, nature of coke deposited, and reforming temperature, as well as the type of support and structural modification. Hence, the integration of a robust perovskite material as a catalyst promoter and choice of support could be tailored in the design and development of robust catalyst systems to improve the performance of supported metal catalysts particularly the suppression of carbon deposition for hydrocarbon and biomass conversion to renewable fuel or chemicals.</p>
