Data from: Motivation and moral attributes in sport
This research's aim was to analyze the relation between self-determined motivation, sportspersonship and athletic aggression in volleyball players. Participated on this study 54 athletes between adults and youths from both genders. As measure instruments were used: Sport Motivation Scale (1995), Multidimensional Sportspersonship Orientations Scale (1997) and Bredemeier's Athletic Aggression Inventory (1985). The data collection was performed during training. For the data analysis the Mann-Whitney test, Spearman correlation and Cronbach's Alpha were used. The data evidenced that overall selfdetermined motivation was found to be a favorable factor in relation to a positive attitude towards sport's social conventions, rules and judges influencing on the worry and compromise with the opponent, being able to interfere over the tendency to behave aggressively.

Appendix for: Light chain neurofilament revealing brain tissue damage in physical contact sport athletes, a systematic review
<p><strong>Objective: </strong>To evaluate whether participating in physical contact sports is associated with a release of neurofilaments and whether this release is related to future clinical neurological and/or psychiatric impairment.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>We have performed a systematic literature review of the PubMed, MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases using a combination of the search terms neurofilament(s)/intermediate filament and sport(s)/athletes. Only original studies, written in English, that have reported on neurofilament measurements in CSF and/or serum/plasma of physical contact sport athletes were retained for data extraction. This review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Analyses guidelines.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Eighteen studies reporting on light chain neurofilament (NfL), in eight different contact sports (i.e. boxing, American football, ice hockey, soccer, mixed martial arts, lacrosse, rugby and wrestling), matched our inclusion criteria. In 13/18 athlete cohorts, significant NfL elevations in CSF or serum/plasma were described, as compared to situations of non-exposure. Most compelling evidence was present in boxers and American football players, where marked and/or immediate exposure-related increases were appreciable at the intra-individual level in exclusive cohorts, generally paired with control groups who were well-described and matched for age. Findings in others sports were less suitable to draw conclusion upon. No studies were encountered that have investigated the relationship with the targeted clinical endpoints. </p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Nfl release can be seen, as a potential marker of neuronal brain damage, in participants of physical contact sports, particularly boxing and American football. The exact significance regarding the risk for future clinical impairment remains to be elucidated.</p>

The connection to the public's preferred sports analysis and physical education curriculum
<p>People have their favorite type of sport, but such preferences tend to be shared for nearly a lifetime. How this preference persists remains inconclusive; hence, this study attempts to determine why people have different viewpoints on sports. It is reasonable to infer that these differences arise from differences in culture, occupation, and race. Therefore, we collected the following data and conducted research in Korea, the United States, and Japan, countries with various differences. The types of sports that people play were collected through surveys and comparisons among sports networks. Namely, “Sport Classification,” “The K-12 Physical Education System (textbooks),” “Survey (actual physical activity),” “Simple Notification Service (SNS) Activity” have been examined to deduce the reason why any particular sport is played. Firstly, Korea, the United States, and Japan conduct different physical education courses. Hence, the results affect people's preferences. Secondly, what people post on SNS and their actual physical activities are different. Thirdly, the degree of connection between sports-type varied as well. Lastly, sports that serve the purpose of being regarded as hubs among sports-type were common in Korea, the United States, and Japan.<br> </p>

Longitudinal white-matter abnormalities in sports-related concussion: a diffusion MRI study of the NCAA-DoD CARE Consortium
<p><b>Objective</b></p> <p>To study longitudinal recovery trajectories of white-matter after sports-related concussion (SRC), we performed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) on collegiate athletes who sustained SRC. </p> <p><b>Methods </b></p> <p>Collegiate athletes (n=219, 82 concussed athletes, 68 contact-sport controls, and 69 non-contact-sport controls) were included from the Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium. The participants completed clinical assessments and DTI at four time points: 24-48-hours post-injury, asymptomatic state, seven days following return-to-play, and six-months post-injury. Tract-based spatial statistics were used to investigate group differences in DTI metrics and identify white-matter areas with persistent abnormalities. Generalized linear mixed models were used to study longitudinal changes and associations between outcome measures and DTI metrics. Cox proportional hazards model was used to study effects of white-matter abnormalities on recovery time. </p> <p><b>Results</b></p> <p>In the white matter of concussed athletes, DTI-derived mean diffusivity was significantly higher than the controls at 24-48 hours post-injury and beyond the point when the concussed athletes became asymptomatic. While the extent of affected white matter decreased over time, part of the corpus callosum had persistent group-differences across all the time points. Furthermore, greater elevation of mean diffusivity at acute concussion was associated with worse clinical outcome measures (i.e., Brief-Symptom-Inventory scores and symptom-severity scores) and prolonged recovery time. No significant differences in DTI metrics were observed between the contact-sport and non-contact-sport controls. </p> <p><b>Conclusions</b></p> <p>Changes in white matter were evident after SRC at six-months post-injury, but were not observed in contact-sport exposure. Further, the persistent white-matter abnormalities were associated with clinical outcomes and delayed recovery time.</p>

<p>In Tim Berners Lee’s original proposal for the Web (retrieved from http://info.cern.ch/Proposal.html) he gave us the basic ingredients to build the web of documents as we experience it today. Due to its simplicity, the Web became a victim of its own success as we were soon overwhelmed. At this point information architects were employed to group together documents into manageable piles using a variety of techniques to group sets of documents. The problem with this approach is that if we start out focusing on documents, our sites turn out document-centric and this is not how users think about the world. People are interested in things not documents. This leads us to move away from a document-orientated approach to Web development to a thing-focused one, and with this move comes the need for new tools and approaches to information architecture. This includes the use of domain-driven design to understand the things and relationships in a problem space and the use of open linked data sources to populate these models. This will be illustrated with case studies from the BBC’s Wildlife Finder and the World Cup project.<br> In summary, Semantic Web-like thinking changes the way we build Web sites. Firstly it focuses us on real-world things and the relationships between them, secondly it introduces a culture of building with open vocabularies to add context and links that create richer, more useful and more findable digital products..</p>
