Histological stacks for: Vestigial structures and variation in the evolution of the marsupial mammal dental development: A study of the Woolly Opossum Caluromys philander

<p>The pattern of dental replacement in marsupial mammals has received much attention for its derived nature and potential relationship to the life history of the group. However, few species have been studied thoroughly and little is known about the embryonic structures and their use in addressing issues of homology and dental evolution in general. We studied a developmental series of ten individuals of pouch young Caluromys philander to thoroughly document dental development with histological sections and 3D models of dental series.</p> <p>This dataset contains the raw TIFF stacks for the above histological sections. These may be used for direct histological analysis, or to generate 3D-reconstructions using software such as Fiji and TrakEM2.</p>

Relative paleointensity stack during the last 500 ka in the western equatorial Indian Ocean

<p>Relative paleointensity (RPI) records can reflect the evolution of the Earth&rsquo;s axial dipole field and provide a signal suitable for global stratigraphic correlation. &nbsp;Marine sediments have the potential to preserve continuous records of paleointensity, although with relative variations. Numerous RPI records have been obtained thus far, and global RPI stacks and the axial dipole field model PADM2M that integrate RPI records with absolute paleointensities from volcanic rocks have been proposed. However, current RPI records are mostly from the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, especially in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, and less RPI records are from the Indian Ocean, in particular of those low latitude areas, which limits the sediment dating and the geomagnetic evolution studies in these regions. Therefore, it is required to make efforts for constructing new RPI records in such areas for global coverage of paleointensity data.&nbsp;We carried out systematic paleomagnetic studies on four sediment cores recovered from the Western Equatorial Indian Ocean (WEIO). Four RPI records were synthesized for the equatorial Indian ocean, which will provide a reference for the establishment of the chronological framework in these areas.</p>

<p>High-quality relative paleointensity (RPI) is important for the study of Earth Interior and sediments dating. Many existing high-resolution RPI curves have been obtained from the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. New high-quality relative paleointensity (RPI) stacks are required for other regions, e.g., Indian Ocean, because the geomagnetic field is a global phenomenon. There has been no such stack reported from this region, and it is required to make efforts for constructing a new stack in such areas for global coverage of paleointensity data. A new stack will be useful as a chronology tool because the water depths of some regions are below the calcium carbonate compensation depth and oxygen isotope stratigraphy is usually not applicable. Recent studies have revealed that high-quality RPI records have great potential for a global correlation of marine sediments in the late Pleistocene. In this context, we conducted a paleomagnetic study on 4 sediment cores recovered from the western equatorial Indian Ocean. The purpose is to establish a regional RPI stack during the last 500 ka (WEIO-500) for global coverage of paleointensity data as well as a regional reference for paleointensity-assisted stratigraphy.</p>

Data from: Comparing ant morphology measurements from microscope and online AntWeb.org 2D z-stacked images

<p><span>Unprecedented technological advances in digitization and the steadily expanding open-access digital repositories are yielding new opportunities to quickly and efficiently measure morphological traits without transportation and advanced/expensive microscope machinery. A prime example is the AntWeb.org database, which allows researchers from all over the world to study taxonomic, ecological, or evolutionary questions on the same ant specimens with ease. However, the reproducibility and reliability of morphometric data deduced from AntWeb compared to traditional microscope measurements has not yet been tested.</span></p> <p><span>Here, we compared 12 morphological traits of 46 <em>Temnothorax</em> ant specimens measured either directly by stereomicroscope on physical specimens or via the widely used open access software tpsDig utilizing AntWeb digital images. We employed a complex statistical framework to test several aspects of reproducibility and reliability between the methods. We estimated (i) the agreement between the measurement methods and (ii) the trait value dependence of the agreement, then (iii) compared the coefficients of variation produced by the different methods, and finally, (iv) tested for systematic bias between the methods in a mixed modelling-based statistical framework.</span></p> <p><span>The stereomicroscope measurements were extremely precise. Our comparisons showed that agreement between the two methods was exceptionally high, without trait value dependence. Further, the coefficients of variation did not differ between the methods. However, we found systematic bias in eight traits: apart from one trait where software measurements overestimated the microscopic measurements, the former underestimated the latter.</span></p> <p><span>Our results shed light on the fact that relying solely on the level of agreement between methods can be highly misleading. In our case, even though the software measurements predicted microscope measurements very well, replacing traditional microscope measurements with software measurements, and especially mixing data collected by the different methods, might result in erroneous conclusions. We provide guidance on the best way to utilize virtual specimens (2D z-stacked images) as a source of morphometric data, emphasizing the method's limitations in certain fields and applications.</span></p>
