Natural disturbance impacts on trade-offs and co-benefits of forest biodiversity and carbon
<p>With accelerating environmental change, understanding the influence of forest disturbances and trade-offs between biodiversity and carbon dynamics is of high socio-economic importance. Most studies, however, have assessed immediate or short-term effects of disturbance, while long-term impacts remain poorly understood. Here, using a tree-ring-based approach, we modelled the effect of 250 years of disturbances on present-day biodiversity indicators and carbon dynamics in well-preserved European temperate primary forests. Our results indicated that disturbance legacies spanning centuries shaped contemporary forest co-benefits and trade-offs, with contrasting, local-scale effects. In the short-term, disturbances enhanced carbon sequestration, reaching maximum rates within a comparatively narrow post-disturbance window (up to 50 years). Concurrently, disturbance diminished aboveground carbon storage, which gradually returned to peak levels over centuries. Temporal patterns in biodiversity potential were bimodal; the first maximum coincided with the short-term post-disturbance carbon sequestration peak, and the second occurred during periods of maximum carbon storage in complex old growth. However, despite fluctuating local-scale trade-offs, forest biodiversity and carbon storage remained stable across the broader study region. These findings underscore the dynamic interdependencies of forest processes, and highlight the necessity of large-scale conservation programs to effectively promote both biodiversity and long-term carbon storage, particularly given the accelerating global biodiversity and climate crises.</p>
Co-assembly of publicly available biocrust sequence datasets
<p>The growing body of metagenomic data offers the possibility for creating longer consensus assemblies for ecosystems of interest as a community resource. We tested this concept by performing a co-assembly of metagenome and metatranscriptome data from five independent studies of biological soil crust communities in the southwestern United States. </p>
Assessing carnivore spatial co-occurrence and temporal overlap in the face of human interference in a semi-arid forest
<p>Apex predators drive top-down effects in ecosystems and the loss of such species can trigger mesopredator release. This ecological process has been well documented in human-modified small areas, but for management and conservation of ecological communities, it is important to know which human factors affect apex predator occurrence and which mediate mesopredators release at large scales. We hypothesized that mesopredators would avoid spatial and temporal overlap with the apex predator, the puma; but that human perturbations (i.e. cattle raising and trophy hunting) would dampen top-down effects and mediate habitat use. We installed 16 camera traps in each of 45, 10x10-km grid cells in the Caldén forest region of central Argentina resulting in 706 total stations covering 61,611km<sup>2</sup>. We used single-season occupancy and two-species co-occurrence models and calculated the species interaction factor (SIF) to explore the contributions of habitat, biotic, and anthropic variables in explaining co-occurrence between carnivore pairs. We also used kernel density estimation techniques to analyze temporal overlap in activity patterns of the carnivore guild. We found that puma habitat use increased with abundance of large prey and with proximity to protected areas. Geoffroy's cats and skunks spatially avoided pumas and this effect was strong and mediated by distance to protected areas and game reserves, but pumas did not influence pampas fox and pampas cat space use. At medium and low levels of puma occupancy, we found evidence of spatial avoidance between 3 pairs of mesocarnivores. All predators were mostly nocturnal and crepuscular across seasons and mesopredators showed little consistent evidence of changing activity patterns with varying levels of puma occupancy or human interference. We found potential for mesopredator release at large scale, especially on the spatial niche axis. Our results suggest that a combination of interacting factors, in conjunction with habitat features and intervening human activities, may make mesopredator release unlikely or difficult to discern at broad scales. Overall, we believe that promoting the creation of new protected areas linked by small forest patches would likely lead to increased predator and prey abundances, as well as the interactions among carnivores inside and outside of protected areas.</p>

Seasonal ocean forecasts to improve predictions of Dungeness crab catch rates, co-developed with state and tribal fishery managers
<p>Historical (hindcast) and September initialized forecast fields from the J-SCOPE system (more information here: https://www.nanoos.org/products/j-scope/). The historical fields are annual averages while the forecasts are averaged monthly. The fields here were used to generate the CPUE models described in Norton et al. (2023). </p> <p>Abstract from the paper: The commercial Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister) fishery in Oregon and Washington (USA) is one of the most valuable fisheries in the region, but it experiences high interannual variability. These fluctuations have been attributed to environmental drivers on seasonal and annual timescales. In this study, researchers and state and tribal fisheries managers develop a statistical model for Dungeness crab catch per unit effort (CPUE) to help inform dynamic management decisions in Oregon and Washington. Fishing observations were matched to seasonally forecast and lagged ocean conditions from J-SCOPE, a regional forecast system (http://www.nanoos.org/products/j-scope/). Inclusion of dynamic and lagged ocean conditions improved model skill compared to simpler models, and the best model captured intraseasonal trends and interannual variability in catch rates, and spatial catch patterns. We also found that model skill relied on fishing behaviour, which varies interannually, highlighting the need for advanced fishing behaviour modelling to reduce uncertainty. The relationships between catch rates and ocean conditions may help elucidate environmental influences of catch variability. Forecast products were co-designed with managers to meet their needs for key decision points. Our results illustrate a seasonal forecasting approach for management of other highly productive, but also dynamic, invertebrates that increasingly contribute to global fisheries yield.</p>

Performing<br> an extraction of insoluble cross-linked polymer using di erent solvents allowed us to analyze how<br> the polymer behaves when subjected to di erent chemical environments, and to obtain soluble<br> samples suitable for more in-depth analysis. Chemical structure of poly (xylitol sebacate-co-butylene<br> sebacate) was determined by a 1H NMR and FTIR analysis of both prepolymer gel sample and<br> samples obtained by extraction of cross-linked polymer using di erent solvents. Block structure of<br> the copolymer was confirmed by both NMR and DSC. Gel fraction, swelling value, water contact<br> angle, and mechanical properties were also analyzed. Biodegradability of this material was confirmed<br> by performing enzymatic and hydrolytic degradation. Synthesizing sugar-alcohol based copolyester<br> using three monomers leads to obtaining a material with interesting chemical structure and desirable<br> mechanical properties comparable to conventional elastomers.</p>

<p>The C-H activation of alkanes mediated by electron-rich metal complexes, such as Rh(I) complexes, has drawn considerable attention in recent decades. In order to interact with the C-H bond, most Rh complexes, such as <em>trans-</em>Rh(PMe<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>(CO)(Cl) need to be activated through irradiation, which leads to the photocleavage of the Rh-CO bond and the formation of the active species Rh(PMe<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>(Cl). To elucidate the details of the photochemistry of <em>trans-</em>Rh(PMe<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>(CO)(Cl), we here present a computationally derived picture as obtained at the density functional level of theory (DFT) in combination with multireference wavefunction-based methods. We have identified that the photocleavage of CO proceeds via the metal-centered excited state, which is populated through intersystem crossing (ISC) from the dipole-allowed excited state S<sub>1</sub>. Moreover, the present study unraveled the reasons for the low C-H activation efficiency when using Rh featuring the bidentate ligand 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe), namely due to its unfavorable photochemical properties, i.e., the small driving force for light-induced CO loss and the fast deactivation of <sup>3</sup>MC state back to the singlet ground state. In this study, we provide theoretical insight into mechanistic details underlying the light-induced CO dissociation process, for Rh complexes featuring PMe<sub>3</sub> and dmpe ligands.</p>
