Rapid evolution of sexual size dimorphism facilitated by Y-linked genetic variance data set

<p>The three datasets were collected to study the genetic architecture of sexual size dimorphism in the seed beetle <i>Callosobruchus maculatus</i> (Quantitative_genetics_data_set), the response of sexual dimorphism to artificial selection (artificial_selection_data_set) and to isolate and quantify the effect of Y haplotypes on male body size (Y_introgression_data_set).</p> <p><u>Quantitative genetics:</u> A four generation breeding design with pedigree information for 8022 individuals and body size measurements for 7356 individuals. The breeding design and sample size of the study allows to partition genetic variances into additive autosomal, additive sex-linked, autosomal dominance and X-linked dominance variance.</p> <p><u>Artificial selection:</u> Family level phenotypic data over 10 generations of artificial selection using direct progenitors of the quantitative genetics experiment in 5 different selection regimes (random selection [C], sexually antagonistic selection, for increased sexual dimorphism [SA], sex limited selection; for small males [SL1], for large females [SL2], for large males [SL3]), each selection regime was replicated by two replicate lines, resulting in 10 selection lines.</p> <p><u>Y introgression:</u> We followed the Y lineage (paternal founder line) from the quantitative genetics experiment over the course of the artificial selection, and after the selection we introgressed each remaining Y lineage into an isogenic background, by 13 generations of backcrossing of males with the isogenic females in order to isolate the Y-linked effect on male body size.</p>

Anticipatory Drainage Base Management for Groundwater Level Optimization [Data Set]

Data set for: Long-term Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) exposure alters anxiety-like behaviour but not boldness in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

<p>Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is an organic pollutant that is commonly detected in wildlife, humans, and the environment.  PFOS can cause a variety of toxic effects in zebrafish, however, the impact on complex behaviours like boldness and anxiety-like behaviour is unknown. To investigate the behavioural effects of PFOS in zebrafish, we exposed adult zebrafish to either 0, 0.1, or 1.0 mg/L PFOS for 40 days. After 20- and 40-days anxiety-like behaviour and boldness were assessed using the novel approach test and novel tank dive test, respectively. After 40- day exposure at a concentration of 1.0 mg/L, PFOS caused a significant increase in time spent in the upper zone and a significant decrease in time spent in the bottom zone of the novel tank dive test, suggesting decreased anxiety-like behaviour compared to controls. Neither 0.1 or 1.0 mg/L had an impact on zebrafish boldness at any time point. Exposure to 1.0 mg/L PFOS significantly decreased locomotion in the novel tank dive test after 20 days, whereas after 40 days there was no impact of PFOS on locomotion at any concentration, indicating potential short-term influences on locomotion. These results suggest chronic PFOS exposure can modulate anxiety-like behaviour, while exploratory activity and locomotion are not altered.</p>

<p><strong>Introduction</strong>: Mental health problems appear to be increasing in importance in Africa. Mental and substance use disorders were the leading cause of yearly lived with disability in Sub-Saharan Africa. Evidence from previous studies shows considerable variation in the prevalence of these disorders. The most acceptable explanation for this wide variation is likely to be the fact that socio cultural factors are major determinants of mental disorders. Therefore a mental disorder has to be understood in a specific setting to develop effective and tailored interventions</p> <p><strong>Objective</strong>: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of common mental disorders among adult residents in Silte Zone, southern Ethiopia</p> <p><em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> Community based cross sectional the study was conducted in the study area. A total of 1178 adults were selected by using a three stage systematic sampling technique. &nbsp;Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was used to determine the prevalence of common mental disorders. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Both bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were employed to identify factors associated with common mental disorders.</p> <p><strong>Result:</strong> The prevalence of common mental disorders among adults found to be 39.7%. Increased age (OR = 1.114; 95% CI = 1.095, 1.134), being female (OR = 9.421; 95% CI = 5.947, 14.926), poor social support (OR = 1.987; 95% CI = 1.358, 2.907) and having life threatening experience (OR = 2.162; 95% CI = 1.825, 2.562) were significantly associated with common mental disorders.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> In the study, the magnitude of common mental disorders remains high in the study area. Increased age, being female, poor social support and having life threatening experience were significantly associated with common mental disorders.</p> <p><strong>Key words: </strong>Common mental disorders, self-reporting questionnaire, social support, Ethiopia</p>

DNA metabarcoding data characterizing insectivorous diet of purple martins (Progne subis subis) using two COI primer sets (ANML and ZBJ)

<p>DNA metabarcoding is a molecular technique frequently used to characterize diet composition of insectivorous birds. However, results are sensitive to methodological decisions made during sample processing, with primer selection being one of the most critical. The most frequently used DNA metabarcoding primer set for avian insectivores is ZBJ. However, recent studies have found that ZBJ produces significant biases in prey classification that likely influence our understanding of foraging ecology. A new primer set, ANML, has shown promise for characterizing insectivorous bat diets with fewer taxonomic biases than ZBJ, but ANML is not yet widely used to study insectivorous birds. Here, we evaluate the ANML primer set for use in metabarcoding of avian insectivore diets through comparison with the more commonly used ZBJ primer set. Fecal samples were collected from both adult and nestling Purple Martins (<i>Progne subis subis</i>) at two sites in the USA and one site in Canada to maximize variation in diet composition and to determine if primer selection impacts our understanding of diet variation among sites. In total, we detected 71 arthropod prey species, 39 families, and 10 orders. Of these, 40 species were uniquely detected by ANML, whereas only 11 were uniquely detected by ZBJ. We were able to classify 54.8% of exact sequence variants from ANML libraries to species compared to 33.3% from ZBJ libraries. We found that ANML outperformed ZBJ for PCR efficacy, taxonomic coverage, and specificity of classification, but that using both primer sets together produced the most comprehensive characterizations of diet composition. Significant variation in both alpha- and beta-diversity between sites was found using each primer set separately and in combination. To our knowledge, this is the first published metabarcoding study to directly compare avian diet characterizations produced with both ANML and ZBJ primer sets.</p>

Data set showing the number of tail scars of North American and Eurasian beavers

<p><span>Intraspecific competition plays an important role for territory acquisition and occupancy, in turn affecting individual fitness. Thus, understanding the drivers of intraspecific aggression can increase our understanding of population dynamics. Here, we investigated intraspecific aggression in Eurasian (<i>Castor fiber</i>) and North American (<i>C. canadensis</i>) beavers that are both monogamous, territorial mammals. Combined, we examined tail scars from &gt;1000 beavers (&gt;2000 capture events) as part of two long-term studies in Norway and the USA. We investigated the influence of landscape structure, population density, sex, age, and (for Eurasian beavers only) social status and group size on the number of tail scars caused by conspecifics. The number of tail scars was affected by population density in well-connected landscape types (large lakes and rivers), but not in more isolated areas (ponds), where individuals generally had fewer tail scars. Further, the relationship of population density was not linear. In the North American beaver population occurring in large lakes, intraspecific aggression increased with population density. Conversely, in the saturated Eurasian beaver population, intraspecific aggression was in a negative relationship with population density (except at the highest densities), likely due to inverse density-dependent intruder pressure via dispersers. Our findings emphasize that population density can affect intraspecific aggression depending on landscape structure, which might have important consequences for local patterns of dispersal, mate change and territory occupancy, all of which can affect population dynamics.</span></p>
