NLP and machine learning to measure peace from news media

<p>"Hate speech" can mobilize violence and destruction.  What are the characteristics of "peace speech" that reflect and support the social processes that maintain peace?  In this study we used a data driven, machine learning approach to identify the words most associated with lower-peace versus higher-peace countries. Logistic regression and random forest classifiers were trained using five respected, traditional peace indices: Global Peace Index, Positive Peace Index, World Happiness Index, Fragile States Index, and Human Development Index. The feature inputs into the machine learning model were the word frequencies from the news media in each country and the output classifications were the level of peace in that country.  The machine learning model was successful in properly classifying the level of peace from the news media in a country (both accuracy and F1: 96% - 100%). We also used that trained machine model to create a machine learning peace index that measured the level of peace in countries, including countries not in the training set, which correlated with the average of those five traditional peace indices (r-squared = 0.8349). Using the random forest feature importance method we found that the words in news media in lower-peace countries were characterized by words related to government, order, control and fear (such as government, state, law, security and court), while higher-peace countries were characterized by an increased prevalence of words related to optimism for the future and fun (such as time, like, home, believe and game).</p>

Data for "Qubit fractionalization and emergent majorana liquid in the honeycomb floquet code induced by coherent errors and weak measurements"

<p>From the perspective of quantum many-body physics, the Floquet code of Hastings and Haah can be thought of as a measurement-only version of the Kitaev honeycomb model where a periodic sequence of two-qubit XX, YY, and ZZ measurements dynamically stabilizes a toric code state with two logical qubits. However, the most striking feature of the Kitaev model is its intrinsic fractionalization of quantum spins into an emergent gauge field and itinerant Majorana fermions that form a Dirac liquid, which is absent in the Floquet code. Here we demonstrate that by varying the measurement strength of the honeycomb Floquet code one can observe features akin to the fractionalization physics of the Kitaev model at finite temperature. Introducing coherent errors to weaken the measurements we observe three consecutive stages that reveal qubit fractionalization (for weak measurements), the formation of a Majorana liquid (for intermediate measurement strength), and Majorana pairing together with gauge ordering (for strong measurements). Our analysis is based on a mapping of the imperfect Floquet code to random Gaussian fermionic circuits (networks) that can be Monte Carlo sampled, exposing two crossover peaks. With an eye on circuit implementations, our analysis demonstrates that the Floquet code, in contrast to the toric code, does not immediately break down to a trivial state under weak measurements, but instead gives way to a long-range entangled Majorana liquid state.</p>

AERPAW helikite spectrum measurements at Packapalooza Festival in Aug 2023

<p>We conducted a spectrum monitoring experiment using a helikite in an urban environment. We float the helikite-mounted software-defined radio (SDR) and global positioning system (GPS) receivers around 90 minutes from noon during NC State's Packapalooza festival in August 2023. The helikite holds a low altitude of around 5 m for 45 minutes and then flies up to around 140 m. After the helikite holds height for a few minutes, it gradually goes down to the ground. The spectrum is swept up to 6 GHz. A single spectrum sweeping takes around 15 seconds and a total of 364 sweeping is executed during the experiment.</p>

Data from: Frost damage measured by electrolyte leakage in subarctic bryophytes increases with climate warming

<p>1. Observed climate change in northern high latitudes is strongest in winter, but still relatively little is known about the effects of winter climate change on tundra ecosystems. Ongoing changes in winter climate and snow cover will change the intensity, duration, and frequency of frost events. Bryophytes form a major component of northern ecosystems but their responses to winter climate changes are largely unknown. 2. Here, we studied how changes in overall winter climate and snow regime affect frost damage in three common bryophyte taxa that differ in desiccation tolerance in a subarctic tundra ecosystem. We used a snow manipulation experiment where bryophyte cores were transplanted from just above the treeline to similar elevation (i.e., current cold climate) and lower elevation (i.e., near-future warmer climate scenario) in Abisko, Sweden. Here we measured frost damage in shoots of <em>Ptilidium ciliare</em>, <em>Hylocomium splendens</em> and <em>Sphagnum fuscum</em> with the relative electrolyte leakage (REL) method, during late winter and spring in two consecutive years. We hypothesized that frost damage would be lower in a milder climate (low site), higher under reduced snow cover, and that taxa from moister habitats with assumed low desiccation tolerance would be more sensitive to lower temperature and thinner snow cover than those from drier and more exposed habitats. 3. Contrary to our expectations, frost damage was highest at low elevation, while the effect of snow treatment differed across sites and taxa. At the high site, frost damage was reduced under snow addition in the taxon with the assumed lowest desiccation tolerance, <em>S. fuscum</em>. Surprisingly, frost damage increased with mean temperature in the bryophyte core of the preceding 14 days leading up to REL measurements and decreased with higher frost degree sums, i.e., was highest in the milder climate at the low site. 4. Synthesis. Our results imply that climate warming in late winter and spring increases frost damage in bryophytes. Given the high abundance of bryophytes in tundra ecosystems, higher frost damage could alter the appearance and functioning of the tundra landscape, although the short and long-term effects on bryophyte fitness remain to be studied.</p>

<p>Data from the Saildrone 2021-2022 observational mission to the Gulf Stream. These data are published to accompany the publication &quot;The importance of contemporaneous measurements for regional air-sea CO<sub>2</sub> flux estimates.&quot; Included in this dataset are the primary and processed variables used throughout the paper. The data associated with each saildrone is named by the drone number. Additionally, included in the structure for each drone are the gas transfer velocities for each scenario, MBL atmospheric CO2 interpolated to the time and location of the drone, and ERA-5 wind speed, sea level pressure, significant wave height, and drag coefficient interpolated to the time and location of the drone. These variables are used to calculate CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes for each scenario and are named as follows: &quot;F&quot; + gas transfer velocity equation used (DM18 or W14) + drone ID + scenario. Scenario A-D correspond to those outlined in the paper. Scenarios E and F correspond to the calculation of air-sea fluxes using all saildrone observed variables except for atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> (from MBL product) and significant wave height (from ERA-5), respectively.&nbsp;</p>

Due to a problem in the beginning of the dry season campaign, the measurements at the tower were continued until outside the campaign period, until 18 October 2020. Measurements were performed by a Spectronus FTIR analyzer. Concentrations were measured at 3 heights (5,15 and 36m) every half hour. Canopy height is ~28m.</p><p>########################################</p><p>Valley CO and CO2 mixing ratio measurements</p><p>Valley CO and CO2 mixing ratio measurements took place in a dry season campaign (28 Sep- 7 Oct 2020) and a wet season campaign (11-18 May 2021) at a valley close to the K34 tower at field site ZF2 (-2.600026, -60.217079). Since no electricity was available, automatic battery-driven bag sampling was performed during the night at 3h time intervals, with 4 measurements per night from a 1m height inlet (~18:00, ~21:00, ~0:00, ~3:00). Bag samples were measured the following morning by a Spectronus FTIR-analyzer.&nbsp;</p><p>########################################</p><p>Plateau and valley chamber CO and CO2 fluxes</p><p>Flux chamber measurements were performed over soil and litter together on the plateau and in the valley at field site ZF2, in a dry season campaign (28 Sep- 7 Oct 2020) and a wet season campaign (11-18 May 2021). Five soil collars were installed in the valley, and five on the plateau. Each collar was measured 3 times during each campaign week (on different days). Measurements from the same collar are indicated as (for example) V1A, V1B, V1C. After each flux chamber measurement, soil moisture and soil temperature was measured.</p>

MLA and MJA Anthropometric angular measurements on the foot

<p><strong>DATASET DESCRIPTION &nbsp;</strong></p> <p>These datasets contain a collection of dynamic measurements of the Medial Longitudinal Arch (MLA) angle and the Metatarsophalangeal Joint Angle (MJA), as well as coordinates of the centroid pixel&nbsp;of the landmarks placed on anthropometric points of the foot. The measurements are performed using the proposed system and Kinovea software during the cycle gait in eight subjects with an average age of 33 years and size foot of 8 inches.&nbsp;</p> <p>The dataset "Anthropometric Vision System" contains 1002 measurements using the proposed system based on the dot product method and landmark detection algorithm, while the dataset "Kinovea" has 1002 measurements using the Kinovea software. In addition, the videos Subject1.mp4 to Subject8.mp4 are utilized to generate datasets through the Anthropometric Vision System and Kinovea software. High resolution wind speed measurements with multicopters of the SWUF-3D UAS fleet - calibration and verification in a wind tunnel with active grid

<p>This dataset contains aggregated measurements from multicopter UAS. The data were measured during the period from October 5, 2022 to October 12, 2022 in the ForWind wind tunnel at the University of Oldenburg with UAS of the SWUF-3D fleet against Constant Temperature Anemometer (CTA).&nbsp;</p><p>Recorded data are provided for measurement flights in different generated wind profiles, i.e. staircase profiles, gusts, velocity steps and statistical turbulence. The measurement data consist of the accelerations measured by the UAS in its longitudinal and lateral axes, as well as the wind speeds measured by the CTA. The latter data were sampled down to the sampling rate of the UAS wind measurement. For the measurements in statistical turbulence, additional files are provided which contain the wind speeds measured by the CTA in its original sampling rate. Each file contains the data for a single measurement flight, as well as information in the header about the ambient conditions in the wind tunnel. List of Talpidae from the Late Miocene of Slovakia, and measurements of the lower molars of Desmanella rietscheli from Dorn-Dürkheim

<p>Central Europe is an area of high diversity for the Talpidae (Eulipotyphla, Mammalia) during the Late Miocene. The assemblages from Slovakia (Borský Svätý Jur, Krásno, Pezinok, Šalgovce, Studienka, Triblavina) are no exception with their abundant material representing eleven species. The uropsiline <em>Desmanella </em>is represented by <em>D</em>. <em>rietscheli</em> and <em>D. dubia</em>. Desmanini fossils are attributed to <em>Archaeodesmana vinea</em>, <em>Archaeodesmana</em> <em>dissona </em>nov. sp., <em>Gerhardstorchia biradicata</em> and <em>Gerhardstorchia</em> sp. The scalopine <em>Proscapanus minor </em>and <em>P. austriacus</em> are well recorded in the Vallesian localities and support the emergence of <em>P. austriacus</em> before the MN9/10 transition.<em> </em>Talpini and Urotrichini are especially rare and only represented by <em>Talpa </em>cf. <em>minuta </em>and Urotrichini gen. sp. indet. Finally, we identified in the MN9 locality of Borský Svätý Jur the youngest occurrence of <em>Desmanodon</em> in Europe with <em>D.</em> cf. <em>fluegeli</em>. The high Late Miocene central European diversity is partly explained by the co-occurence of the competing Scalopini and Talpini during the Vallesian, indicating high-resources environments. The decline of these tribes, followed by the success of the desmans during the Turolian, appears as a consequence of regional environmental changes.</p>

Measurement data for septal spacing and conch morphology in Cretaceous ammonoids

<p>We analyzed the ontogenetic trajectories of conch morphology and septal spacing between successive chambers in Cretaceous ammonoids (suborders Perisphinctina and Ancyloceratina) collected from southern India, Madagascar, and Japan. All examined species, except for the family Collignoniceratidae, exhibited similar characteristics during early ontogeny. The common ontogenetic trajectories of septal spacing show a cycle comprising an increase and a subsequent decrease in septal spacing during early ontogeny. The conch diameters at the end of the cycle were estimated to be 1–4 mm. The conch shape (aperture height and whorl expansion rate) covariably changed at this conch diameter. Such covariable changes are commonly recognized in the suborders Perisphinctina and Ancyloceratina. The similarity in the ontogenetic trajectories of conch morphology implies a closer phylogenetic relationship between these suborders compared to Lytoceratina or Phylloceratina.</p>
