Diffuse-optical data set measured with a smartphone-based sensor on Potato Hill, Oregon, USA

<p>This data set contains both raw data and derived data obtained on Potato Hill, Oregon, on December 17th 2021 using a diffuse-optical, smartphone-based sensor. The raw image files have been converted to an uncompressed Adobe-.dng file format, file names indicate whether the file contains data for the blue (405nm) or red (650nm) laser or spatial calibration data using a 9mm x 9mm calibration pattern. Spectral albedo measurements are contained in the subfilder ./Albedo, the raw images in ./Phone. The root directory contains the matlab code (Matlab R2021b) needed for analysis as well as the derived data.</p> <p>For analyzing the raw data set, use &quot;CameraMatchPotatoHillFinal.m&quot;. It wraps around the function &quot;CameraAnalysisFinal.m&quot;, which performs the image analysis and least-square fit to resorted and rescaled data, employing in turn the model function &quot;theosurfGInf.m&quot;. It saves a derived data set (attenuation, absorption and scattering coefficients, albedos, absorption enhancement factor and snow density.</p> <p>The script &quot;Albedo.m&quot; analyzes the derived data set along with measured albedo and simulated albedo deposited in the file &quot;snicar_120ppb.txt&quot;. Measurements of heavy metals in the moss Orthotrichum lyellii collected using community science in the Duwamish Valley, Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.

<p>Heavy metals concentrations often vary at small spatial scales not captured by air monitoring networks, with implications for environmental justice in industrial-adjacent communities. Pollutants measured in moss tissues are commonly used as a screening tool to guide use of more expensive resources, like air monitors. We piloted a community science approach, engaging over 55 people from nine institutions, to map heavy metals using moss in two industrial-adjacent neighborhoods. Local youth led sampling of the moss <em>Orthotrichum lyellii</em> from trees across a 250×250-m sampling grid (n = 79). We compared their data with expert-collected samples (n = 19) using Principal Components Analysis and Procrustes Analysis. We mapped 21 chemical elements measured in moss, focusing on 6 toxic 'priority' metals: arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, and nickel. We compared local data, using t-tests and boxplots, with two 'reference datasets' of <em>O. lyellii</em> collected in Portland, Oregon, and in Seattle City Parks. We also use Principal Components Analysis to describe major gradients in metals in the study area. Our data submission includes two R scripts and four datasets of heavy metals in moss, including the two reference datasets, which will enable replication of our analyses as well as novel analyses.</p>

Contact angle measurements of droplets on the mandibles of antlions

<p class="MsoNormal">Antlion larvae are fluid-feeding ambush predators that feed on arthropods trapped in their funnel-shaped pits built in sandy habitats; however, details are lacking about their feeding mechanism. Here we tested the hypothesis that the antlion, <em>Myrmeleon crudelis</em>, has adaptations that facilitate fluid feeding in sandy habitats. We measured contact angles of water droplets and used the capillary-rise technique to assess mouthpart wettability. A structural organization was discovered that provides a hydrophobic-hydrophilic wetting dichotomy that would simultaneously support self-cleaning and fluid uptake and is enabled by antiparallel movements of the maxillae. The mouthparts also are augmented by their material properties, including maxillae and mandible tips that are heavily sclerotized for piercing prey and mandibular teeth with resilin that would assist in preventing tooth breakage. Our findings provide insight on how antlion larvae have overcome the challenges of fluid feeding in sandy habitats, which likely contributed to their success and widespread distribution.</p>

Hemotological and morphometric measurements from geladas

<p>Primates have adapted to numerous environments and lifestyles but very few species are native to high elevations. Here, we investigated high-altitude adaptations in the gelada (<em>Theropithecus gelada</em>), a monkey endemic to the Ethiopian Plateau. We examined genome-wide variation in conjunction with measurements of haematological and morphological traits. Our new gelada reference genome is highly intact and assembled at chromosome-length levels. Unexpectedly, we identified a chromosomal polymorphism in geladas that could potentially contribute to reproductive barriers between populations. Compared to baboons at low altitude, we found that high-altitude geladas exhibit significantly expanded chest circumferences, potentially allowing for greater lung surface area for increased oxygen diffusion. We identified gelada-specific amino acid substitutions in the alpha-chain subunit of adult haemoglobin but found that gelada haemoglobin does not exhibit markedly altered oxygenation properties compared to lowland primates. We also found that geladas at high altitude do not exhibit elevated blood haemoglobin concentrations, in contrast to the normal acclimatization response to hypoxia in lowland primates. The absence of altitude-related polycythaemia suggests that geladas are able to sustain adequate tissue-oxygen delivery despite environmental hypoxia. Finally, we identified numerous genes and genomic regions exhibiting accelerated rates of evolution, as well as gene families exhibiting expansions in the gelada lineage, potentially reflecting altitude-related selection. Our findings lend insight into putative mechanisms of high-altitude adaptation while suggesting promising avenues for functional hypoxia research.</p>

Morphological measurements Oryzias eversi, Oryzias nigrimas and hybrids

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The evolution of complex phenotypes like reproductive strategies is challenging to understand as they often depend on multiple adaptations, which only jointly result in a specific functionality. Sulawesi ricefishes (Adrianichthyidae) evolved a reproductive strategy termed pelvic brooding. In contrast to the more common transfer brooding, female pelvic brooders carry an egg-bundle connected to their body for weeks until the fry hatches. To examine the genetic architecture of pelvic brooding, we crossed the pelvic brooding <i>Oryzias eversi</i> and the transfer brooding <i>O. nigrimas</i> (species divergence time: ~ 3.6 my). We hypothesize, that a low number of loci and modularity have facilitated the rapid evolution of pelvic brooding. Traits associated to pelvic brooding, like rib length, pelvic fin length and morphology of the genital papilla were correlated in the parental species but correlations were reduced or lost in their F1 and F2 hybrids. Using the Castle-Wright estimator, we found that generally few loci underlie the studied traits. Further, both parental species showed modularity in their body plans. In conclusion, morphological traits related to pelvic brooding were based on a few loci and the mid-body region likely could evolve independently from the remaining body parts. Both factors presumably facilitated the rapid evolution of pelvic brooding.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Does the social distancing measures impact collaboration in software processes?

<p>Context: Social distancing measures to reduce the impacts of the&nbsp;COVID-19 pandemic bring challenges for several organizations<br> and their Information Systems (IS). Problem: Social distancing&nbsp;were suddenly implemented, with no adequate planning. Furthermore, there is not a clear understanding of the impacts of social&nbsp;distancing measures on the software development teams&rsquo; work.&nbsp;Solution: This study aims to identify the presence and impacts&nbsp;of social distancing on collaboration between people, as well as<br> on activities and technologies used in software development, from&nbsp;the perspective of professionals who work in software development teams. IS Theory: The research was developed under the&nbsp;aegis of the Team Resilience Theory. Method: A field study was&nbsp;conducted based on structured interviews and qualitative analysis.&nbsp;Results: In general, it was observed no impact on the software&nbsp;processes activities, although their performance was affected. It was also observed that the impact on the collaboration dynamics in&nbsp;software development was perceived in different ways, by several&nbsp;team members. This study identified the most&nbsp; common tools used&nbsp;by organizations, as well as the benefits and challenges of collaboration in software development after social distancing measures.&nbsp;Contribution: The impacts of social distancing on collaboration&nbsp;in software development were identified, reinforcing the Team&nbsp;Resilience Theory and similar study conducted in the beginning&nbsp;of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study contributes to the Grand&nbsp;Research Challenge &quot;Systemic and Socially Aware Perspective for&nbsp;Information Systems&quot;.</p>

Genetic covariance in immune measures and pathogen resistance in decorated crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus) is sex and pathogen specific

<p>Insects are important models for studying immunity in an ecological and evolutionary context. Yet, most empirical work on the insect immune system has come from phenotypic studies meaning we have a limited understanding of the genetic architecture of immune function in the sexes.</p> <p>We use nine highly inbred lines to thoroughly examine the genetic relationships between a suite of commonly used immune assays (haemocyte count, implant encapsulation, total phenoloxidase activity, antibacterial zone of inhibition, pathogen clearance) and resistance to infection by three generalist insect pathogens (the gram-negative bacterium <em>Serratia marcescens</em>, the gram-positive bacterium <em>Bacillus cereus</em> and the fungus <em>Metarhizium robertsii</em>) in male and female <em>Gryllodes sigillatus</em>.</p> <p>There were consistent positive genetic correlations between haemocyte count, antibacterial and phenoloxidase activity and resistance to <em>S. marcescens</em> in both sexes, but these relationships were less consistent for resistance to <em>B. cereus</em> and <em>M. robertsii</em>. In addition, the clearance of <em>S. marcescens</em> was genetically correlated with the resistance to all three pathogens in both sexes. Genetic correlations between resistances to the different pathogen species were inconsistent, indicating that resistance to one pathogen does not necessarily mean resistance to another. Finally, while there is ample genetic (co)variance in immune assays and pathogen resistance, these genetic estimates differed across the sexes and many of these measures were not genetically correlated across the sexes suggesting that these measures could evolve independently in the sexes.</p> <p>Our finding that the genetic architecture of immune function is sex and pathogen specific suggests that the evolution of immune function in male and female <em>G. sigillatus</em> is likely to be complex. Similar quantitative genetic studies that measure a large number of assays and resistance to multiple pathogens in both sexes are needed to ascertain if this complexity extends to other species.</p>
