2020 IMPACTS HVPS Individual Particle Measurements, Habits, and Size Distributions

Morphological measurements for particles detected by the vertical channel of the High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS) during seven flights of the 2020 IMPACTS field campaign, in netCDF format. Some flights have multiple files. Files ending in V_1.nc are individual particle files, while files ending in V.HVPS.nc are size distribution files. The numbers in all filenames represent the file start times, in format YYMMDDHHMMSS (in UTC). The individual particle data files include habit classifications as were used in Schima et al. 2024 (citation pending publication), and similarly, habit size distributions are available within the size distribution files. These files were created using University of Illinois/Oklahoma Optical Array Probe Processing Software (UIOPS, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1285968).

Some additional notes on habits

The size distribution files have a "habit" dimension of length 10. X-ray Emission of Nearby Low-mass and Sun-like Stars with Directly Imageable Habitable Zones: X-ray Spectra and Light Curves

This repository contains the X-ray light curves extracted from the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations and the best-fit X-ray spectral models (with and without emission lines) from all stars detected at high significance in Binder et al. (2024), ApJS, ..., ...

Description of Files:

LightCurves.zip

Summary: Light curve files (327) for all stars detected at high significance; in FITS (BinTableHDU) format with 7-14 extensions. The following types of data are included:

"*_source.lc" : EPIC/PN source light curves of stars detected with more than ~500 net counts in an XMM-Newton observation

"*_bkg.lc" : EPIC/PN background light curves of stars detected with more than ~500 net counts in an XMM-Newton observation

"*_sub_lc.fits" : Background-subtracted light curves of stars detected with more than ~50 net counts in a Chandra observation

Spectra.zip

Summary: Spectra (152) for all stars detected at high significance (with >500 net counts in Chandra observations and >2000 net counts in XMM-Newton observations) in ASCII (ECSV format). We provide both the continuum spectra and spectra containing line emission. For stars that exhibit X-ray count rate variability, we provide spectra for specific variability types (see Binder et al. 2024 for details). The following types of data are included:

"*_continuum.dat" : Continuum-only best-fit spectra

"*_lines.dat" : Best-fit spectra containing line emission

Hydraulic prediction of drought-induced plant dieback and top-kill depends on leaf habit and growth form

Hydraulic failure caused by severe drought contributes to aboveground dieback and whole-plant death. The extent to which dieback or whole-plant death can be predicted by plant hydraulic traits has rarely been tested among species with different leaf habits and/or growth forms. We investigated 19 hydraulic traits in 40 woody species in a tropical savanna and their potential correlations with drought response during an extreme drought event during the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in 2015. Plant hydraulic trait variation was partitioned substantially by leaf habit but not growth form along a trade-off axis between traits that support drought tolerance versus avoidance. Semi-deciduous species and shrubs had the highest branch dieback and top-kill (complete aboveground death) among the leaf habits or growth forms. Dieback and top-kill were well explained by combining hydraulic traits with leaf habit and growth form, suggesting integrating life history traits with hydraulic traits will yield better predictions.
