A Comprehensive Framework for Life-Cycle Cost Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decks

<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18STOKS02. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;Various environmental and mechanical stressors cause deterioration of concrete bridge decks. Normal wear and tear, freeze and thaw cycles, and chloride penetration due to deicing salts can cause aggressive deterioration that usually require frequent interventions during the life-cycle of the bridge. These interventions include deck maintenance and repairs (e.g., application of sealers or overlay placement) as well as bridge deck replacement. The quantification of the life-cycle cost of bridge decks considering maintenance and repair activities represents a significant challenge facing local and state transportation agencies. The life-cycle maintenance activities not only increase the direct life-cycle cost of the bridge, but they also lead to significant indirect user costs due to increasing traffic delays, work zone crashes, and operating cost. Moreover, these traffic delays increase the carbon footprint of the bridge and adversely affect the life-cycle bridge sustainability. Accordingly, the proper quantification of indirect costs associated with life-cycle bridge management activities including maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation activities is of paramount importance. The research attempts to fill in the knowledge gaps in quantifying the indirect costs associated with bridge deck maintenance activities and their impact on the overall bridge life-cycle cost.&quot;</p>

VAMONOS - Flow through bridges. Experimental data.

<p>This dataset contains the results from the experimental tests carried out at the hydraulics laboratory of the Civil Engineering School, at University of A Coru&ntilde;a (Spain), as part of the VAMONOS (Vertically-averaged models for non-hydrostatic flows) project (CTM2017-85171-C2-2-R). The aim of the project is the development of enhanced 2D river flow models including additional terms to account for non-hydrostatic pressure and mixed flow conditions around hydraulic structures.</p> <p>This data package includes experimental results on 4 bridge geometries that were tested in an open channel. The experimental facility consists of a 15 m flume with a square cross-section of 0.5 x 0.5 m. Water depths were measured with an automatic positioner on a grid of approximately 117 points. In whole, 32 experimental tests have been carried out under different flow conditions.</p> <p>This dataset is structured in the following pdf documents and folders:</p> <ul> <li>. Source Data for Crowdsourcing Bridge Dynamic Monitoring with Smartphone Vehicle Trips

<p>This data accompanies the study "Crowdsourcing Bridge Dynamic Monitoring with Smartphone Vehicle Trips" published in (Nature) Communications Engineering. This paper focuses on using large and inexpsensive datasets for obtaining information on the dynamics of bridges. In this study, data is collected by smartphones in moving vehicles as the cross over a bridge, in three distinct applications. Smartphone data was collected in controlled field experiments and uncontrolled Uber rides on a long-span suspension bridge in the USA (The Golden Gate Bridge) and an analytical method was developed to accurately recover modal properties. The method was also successfully applied to partially-controlled crowdsourced data collected on a short-span highway bridge in Italy. The results suggest that larve and inexpensive datasets collected by smartphones could play a role in monitoring the health of existing transportation infrastructure.</p> <p>The data provided includes the source data for the figures in the publication as well as the "controlled data" referenced in the study.</p>

Data from: Augmin prevents merotelic attachments by promoting proper arrangement of bridging and kinetochore fibers

<p>The human mitotic spindle is made of microtubules nucleated at centrosomes, at kinetochores, and from pre-existing microtubules by the augmin complex. However, it is unknown how the augmin-mediated nucleation affects distinct microtubule classes and thereby mitotic fidelity. Here we use superresolution microscopy to analyze the previously indistinguishable microtubule arrangements within the crowded metaphase plate area and demonstrate that augmin is vital for the formation of uniformly arranged parallel units consisting of sister kinetochore fibers connected by a bridging fiber. This ordered geometry helps both prevent and resolve merotelic attachments. Whereas augmin-nucleated bridging fibers prevent merotelic attachments by creating a nearly parallel and highly bundled microtubule arrangement unfavorable for creating additional attachments, augmin-nucleated k-fibers produce robust force required to resolve errors during anaphase. STED microscopy revealed that bridging fibers were impaired twice as much as k-fibers following augmin depletion. The complete absence of bridging fibers from a significant portion of kinetochore pairs, especially in the inner part of the spindle, resulted in the specific reduction of the interkinetochore distance. Taken together, we propose a model where augmin promotes mitotic fidelity by generating assemblies consisting of bridging and kinetochore fibers that align sister kinetochores to face opposite poles, thereby preventing erroneous attachments.</p>

Data for: Bridging the gap between microclimate and microrefugia: A bottom‐up approach reveals strong climatic and biological offsets

<p>In the context of global warming, a clear understanding of microrefugia, microsites enabling the survival of species populations outside their main range limits, is crucial. Several studies have identified forcing factors that are thought to favor the existence of microrefugia. However, there is a lack of evidence to conclude whether, and to what extent, the climate encountered within existing microrefugia differs from the near surrounding climate. So, we adopt a "bottom-up" approach, linking marginal disconnected populations to microclimate.</p> <p>We used the southernmost disconnected and abyssal populations of the circumboreal herbaceous plant <em>Oxalis acetosella</em> in Southern France to study whether populations matching the definition of "microrefugia" occur in particularly favorable climatic conditions compared to neighboring control plots distant about 50 m to 100 m. Temperatures were recorded in putative microrefugia and in neighboring plots for approximately 2 years to quantify their thermal offsets. Vascular plant inventories were carried out to test whether plant communities also reflect microclimatic offsets.</p> <p>We found that current microclimatic dynamics are genuinely at stake in microrefugia. Microrefugia climates are systematically colder compared to those found within 50 m to 100 m distant. This pattern was more noticeable during the summer months. Abyssal populations showed stronger offsets compared to neighboring plots than the putative microrefugia occurring at higher altitudes. Plant communities demonstrate this strong spatial climatic variability, even at such a microscale approach, as species compositions systematically differed between the two plots, with species more adapted to colder and moister conditions in microrefugia compared to the surrounding area.</p>

Bridging the gap: Optimising connectivity solutions for an arboreal gliding mammal

<p>Connectivity modelling tools are important for developing mitigation strategies to alleviate negative impacts on animal movement caused by road networks. Arboreal gliding mammals are especially vulnerable to road widening as they are unable to cross gaps beyond their gliding capacity. However, there are limitations of conventional raster-based modelling techniques when applied on this group. We developed and applied a new model that quantifies the changes in connectivity for an arboreal gliding species, the Sunda colugo, in Singapore using information on species-specific glide performance through a vector-based GIS approach. We also incorporated a genetic algorithm to determine optimal locations for sets of glide poles that could be installed to improve connectivity.  Expectedly, connectivity was heavily impacted by the road widening works, with a 93.3% decrease in the total number of feasible glide paths connecting roadside trees. Nine glide poles installed during the construction phase of the project were initially uninformed by the connectivity model and they provided 26 additional connections only. Comparatively, the top nine pole locations identified through the genetic algorithm provided 247 additional connections, almost 10 times more than the amount supplied by the initial nine glide pole locations determined through qualitative methods. The multi-objective capacity of the genetic algorithm also reduced large connectivity gaps post-development, with simulated glide poles increasing the percentage of pixels covered with connectivity from 16.1% to 27.7%. </p> <p>Synthesis and applications: Our model fills a knowledge gap in connectivity modelling for arboreal gliding mammals whose movements are affected by varying habitat alterations. We demonstrated that locations of mitigation structures greatly influence the success of mitigation efforts and the locations can be optimized by incorporating the glide performance of the species into the genetic algorithm. Given limited conservation resources, this approach would benefit managers in formulating cost-effective efforts for arboreal gliding mammals.</p>

A Benchmark Dataset for Vision-based Bridge Traffic Load Monitoring in a Cable-stayed Bridge

<p>Traffic load monitoring based on deep learning and computer vision has garnered significant attention in bridge engineering worldwide. Unlike traditional traffic load monitoring systems, computer vision-based techniques can accurately extract the spatiotemporal load distribution across the entire bridge in an autonomous manner. However, many of the related studies in the literature used datasets that were collected from a few specific areas of different bridges, and there are very limited datasets that provide complete coverage of the entire bridge, making a detailed comparison of different methods difficult. This paper presents a benchmark dataset that provides a series of annotations and field measurements required for traffic load detection, tracking and continuous monitoring on the bridge. The dataset was collected by five cameras, and two weigh-in-motion systems installed on a cable-stayed bridge and is divided into three subsets. The first subset contains over 32,000 images and annotation files of eleven types of vehicle-related targets, which are necessary for the training of vehicle detection models. The second subset consists of photos of the calibration board and coordinates of reference points that are used for camera calibration. The last subset is designated for the field verification of various algorithms, providing synchronized vehicle weight data and monitoring videos covering the whole bridge. To the author&rsquo;s knowledge, this dataset is the first open-source dataset for vision-based traffic load monitoring in a bridge, which will have tremendous value in promoting research in the area of innovative bridge health monitoring technologies.</p>

Increasing Bridge Durability and Service Life with LIDAR Enhanced Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)

<p>Bridge construction inspections require quantitative measurements and location information. The conventional approach is visual inspection, which in general, is rather time-consuming, expensive due to traffic closure, subjective, and needs special access. Therefore an automated rebar layout detection algorithm was developed to quickly extract quantitative rebar layout information from the LiDAR data. This systematic method can automatically cluster the bridge elements from a 3D point cloud by using LiDAR-equipped UAS data collection and unsupervised machine learning techniques. A new automated inspection system using a LIDAR-equipped UAS can eventually if developed and tested be more reliable as well as less expensive. In the future, if it can be automatized, it can be implemented to simplify the complexity of inspections. The authors developed a platform to mount the camera, sonar laser, and DAQ on the UAS and remotely controlled the data collection operation. Additionally, an algorithm was developed which can automatically obtain the geometric information of the rebar. The proposed automated RGBD-equipped UAS system was developed, fabricated, and tested in the Balloon Fiesta Park on a simulated bridge deck at different heights and with different UAS motions to obtain the best distance, speed, and motion for real construction field.&nbsp; The authors also conducted an outdoor experiment in a construction field at White Rock to validate the capability of the proposed system on the real site with vertical rebar and the challenges of the real construction site. The result confirmed that the LIDAR-equipped UAS system has the potential to help the inspection process in terms of time, accuracy, safety, and generating a permanent record of the inspection. Bridge construction information collected by LiDAR-equipped UAS technology can eventually provide bridge managers with transparent condition assessment and one-step decision-making support through quantitative measurement combined with 3D visualization to facilitate repair planning that can greatly facilitate maintenance.</p>

Comparative Analysis of 3D Printed Bridge Construction in Louisiana

<p>A construction 3D printing system could result in automated infrastructure development at reduced cost and time, significantly boosting overall productivity. Although there has been a growing interest in using construction 3D printing for projects such as house construction, implementing this innovative technology for infrastructure development, particularly bridge construction, has not been investigated as extensively. This study aims to compare the environmental impact of precast and 3D concrete printing (3DCP) techniques with a pedestrian bridge case study, located in Louisiana, where the bridge elements were 3D printed off-site and then transported and assembled on the bridge site. A detailed cradle-to-site life cycle assessment has been performed from the standpoint of material, construction, and installation stages, using an open-source software called OpenLCA. The results of this study showed that the mixtures commonly used in 3DCP have a higher negative environmental impact compared to the precast method due to the higher percentage of cement used in these materials. However, since 3DCP used less material than the precast technique, there is no significant difference in the environmental impact of the total concrete used between the 3DCP and precast bridges. In addition, due to the use of reinforcement and formwork in the precast technique, the environmental impact of the total materials used in the precast bridge was more adverse than the 3DCP bridge. Notably, due to use of electricity for printing, the negative environmental impact of the construction process in 3DCP was significantly higher than in the precast technique. Finally, the total carbon dioxide equivalent emitted during the construction of the 3DCP bridge was 80% of the precast bridge.</p>

The paper<br> summarises the theoretical background to the project, the BBC&rsquo;s &lsquo;information ecosystem&rsquo;,<br> and the user research and requirements-gathering exercises undertaken.<br> Much work on developing metadata crosswalks has been at the heading or label level, and<br> not based on semantic analysis of the content of the labelling or description. However, such<br> semantic analysis needs to be undertaken when mapping diverse taxonomies, thesauri, and<br> keyword lists and, in practice, often needs to balance preservation of local or specialised<br> terminology with accessibility for general users. Just as metadata about content permits the<br> organization of that content, so metadata about metadata (parametadata, or meta-metadata)<br> permits the organization of metadata, enabling end users to make informed browse and<br> navigation choices. Increasingly, in order to integrate content, different KOSs, such as<br> taxonomies and ontologies, need to be related.<br> The paper concludes by summarising the ways in which problems that arose during the<br> integration project were resolved, and how policies for managing parametadata, subjective<br> metadata, and semantic-level mapping were developed.</p>

Dataset from structural health monitoring of a steel bridge in Sweden

<p>The&nbsp;dataset consists of sensor data from the V&auml;nersborg Bridge in Sweden, comprising 64 bridge opening events registered as&nbsp;accelerations, strains, inclinations, and weather conditions. Data from before, during, and after a verified fracture are provided.&nbsp;The sample of raw data captured the same bridge opening event multiple times over the monitoring duration. Classifying data before and after damage enables the development and verification of routines for novelty detection.&nbsp;</p>
