temporalNEON: Repository containing raw and cleaned-up organismal data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) useful for evaluating the links between change in biodiversity and ecosystem stability
Organismal data include the following taxonomic groups: small mammals, fish, ground beetles, and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Data were retrieved from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) database in November 2020. We submit both raw data retrieved from NEON as .rds files, R code used to process these data, as well as processed data as .csv files.
Amperometric response of the HRP-AuNCs/SWCNTs/CFUME (a), HRP/SWCNTs/CFUME (b), SWCNTs/CFUME (c), HRP-AuNCs/CFUME (d), HRP/CFUME (e) and CFUME (f) in 0.01 M PBS buffer solution containing 10 μM H2O2.
<p>The amperometric responses of HRP-AuNCs/MWCNTs/CFUME (a), HRP/MWCNTs/CFUME (b)、MWCNTs/CFUME (c)、HRP-AuNCs/CFUME (d)、HRP/CFUME (e) and CFUME (f) to the addition of H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> were compared in 0.01 M PBS. The applied potential was chosen on -0.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl sat. KCl), which can effectively reduce possible interferences and results in high selectivity to H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>. In F. S3, MWCNTs/CFUME (c), HRP-AuNCs/CFUME (d), HRP/CFUME (e) and CFUME (f) gave no response to 10 μM H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>. The response of HRP-AuNCs/MWCNTs/CFUME (a) is obvious and more than 30 times of that from the HRP/MWCNTs/CFUME. The electrodes without HRP or MWCNTs have no response. This result suggests that HRP-AuNCs/MWCNTs/CFUME is overwhelming in amperometric measurement.</p>
VariaNTS corpus: A spoken Dutch corpus containing talker and linguistic variability
<p>The VariaNTS (Variatie in Nederlandse Taal en Sprekers) corpus is a Dutch spoken corpus that was developed to maximize both linguistic and talker variability. It contains 1000 stimulus materials from 11 linguistic subcategories, recorded by 8 male and 8 female native speakers of standard Dutch. The corpus contains audio recordings, orthographic transcriptions, stimulus-specific details such as word frequencies, neighborhood densities and phonotactic probabilities, and talker details. The VariaNTS corpus aims to provide new materials to be used for broad assessment of speech perception and word recognition in Dutch clinical and academic settings. </p>
Shipping Container Chassis in the U.S.
<p>The University of New Orleans Transportation Institute (UNOTI) examined the issues surrounding the current state of international chassis utilization in the United States (U.S.). The international chassis system in the U.S. is unique compared to global chassis utilization where the motor carriers, the freight customers, or off-site terminals provide chassis. However in the U.S., the divestment of international chassis by ocean carriers, which began in 2009, resulted in three major international chassis leasing companies linked to the foreign carriers. These lessors are the American shippers’ predominant provider of international chassis. The extra cost associated with the lack of international chassis lessor competition profits the foreign ocean carrier lines while raising costs for domestic consumers.</p>
Molecular dating for phylogenies containing a mix of populations and species by using Bayesian and RelTime approaches
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Simultaneous molecular dating of population and species divergences is essential in many biological investigations, including phylogeography, phylodynamics, and species delimitation studies. In these investigations, multiple sequence alignments consist of both intra- and inter-species samples (mixed samples). As a result, the phylogenetic trees contain inter-species, inter-population, and within-population divergences. Bayesian relaxed clock methods are often employed in these analyses, but they assume the same tree prior for both inter- and intra-species branching processes and require specification of a clock model for branch rates (independent vs. autocorrelated rates models). We evaluated the impact of a single tree prior onBayesian divergence time estimates by analyzing computer-simulated datasets. We also examined the effectof the assumption of independence of evolutionary rate variation among branches when the branch rates are autocorrelated. Bayesian approach with coalescent tree priors generally produced excellent molecular dates and highest posterior densities with high coverage probabilities. We also evaluated the performance of a non-Bayesian method, RelTime, which does not require the specification of a tree prior or a clock model. RelTime's performance was similar to that of the Bayesian approach, suggesting that it is also suitable to analyze datasets containing both populations and species variation when its computational-efficiency is needed.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Confocal Raman spectroscopy data from native and polyethylene glycol-containing wood
<p>Confocal Raman mapping data from native pine wood and pine wood with polyethylene glycol (PEG) of three different molecular weights in deuterated water.</p> <p>The spectroscopic data consists of 4 text files, each of which contains in total 1600 2D arrays of Raman intensity corresponding to different wavenumber values. Each of these 2D arrays consists of 175 rows with 175 comma-separated values on each row. The 2D arrays corresponding to different wavenumbers are separated by a line starting with '#' and specifying the wavenumber of the subsequent 2D array (unit inverse cm). The wavenumber axis is also given in a separate file. Antibiotics can be used to contain drug-resistant bacteria by maintaining sufficiently large sensitive populations
<p>Standard infectious disease practice calls for aggressive drug treatment that rapidly eliminates the pathogen population before resistance can emerge. When resistance is absent, this elimination strategy can lead to complete cure. However, when resistance is already present, removing drug-sensitive cells as quickly as possible removes competitive barriers that may slow the growth of resistant cells. In contrast to the elimination strategy, the containment strategy aims to maintain the maximum tolerable number of pathogens, exploiting competitive suppression to achieve chronic control. Here we combine <em>in vitro</em> experiments in computer-controlled bioreactors with mathematical modeling to investigate whether containment strategies can delay failure of antibiotic treatment regimens. To do so, we measured the "escape time" required for drug-resistant <em>E. coli</em> populations to eclipse a threshold density maintained by adaptive antibiotic dosing. Populations containing only resistant cells rapidly escape the threshold density, but we found that matched resistant populations that also contain the maximum possible number of sensitive cells could be contained for significantly longer. The increase in escape time occurs only when the threshold density--the acceptable bacterial burden--is sufficiently high, an effect that mathematical models attribute to increased competition. The findings provide decisive experimental confirmation that maintaining the maximum number of sensitive cells can be used to contain resistance when the size of the population is sufficiently large.</p>

Integrated Simulation-Based Optimization of Operational Decisions at Container Terminals - Dataset
<p>At container terminals, many cargo handling processes are interconnected and occur in parallel. Within short time windows, many operational decisions need to be made and should consider both time efficiency and equipment utilization. During operation, many sources of disturbance and, thus, uncertainty exist. For these reasons, perfectly coordinated processes can potentially unravel. This study analyzes simulation-based optimization, an approach that considers uncertainty by means of simulation while optimizing a given objective. The developed procedure simultaneously scales the amount of utilized equipment and adjusts the selection and tuning of operational policies. Thus, the benefits of a simulation study and an integrated optimization framework are combined in a new way. Four meta-heuristics - Tree-structured Parzen Estimator, Bayesian Optimization, Simulated Annealing, and Random Search - guide the simulation-based optimization process. Thus, this study aims to determine a favorable configuration of equipment quantity and operational policies for container terminals using a small number of experiments and, simultaneously, to empirically compare the chosen meta-heuristics including the reproducibility of the optimization runs. The results show that simulation-based optimization is suitable for identifying the amount of required equipment and well-performing policies. Among the presented scenarios, no clear ranking between meta-heuristics regarding the solution quality exists. The approximated optima suggest that pooling yard trucks and a yard block assignment that is close to the quay crane are preferable.</p> <p>The dataset is stored in the Excel file named <em>Integrated Simulation-Based Optimization of Operational Decisions at Container Terminals - Dataset.xlsx</em>.This contains the data to create the figures and the data to run the statistics. Data from: Magnetoliposomes containing magnesium ferrite nanoparticles as nanocarriers for the model drug curcumin
Magnesium ferrite nanoparticles, with diameters around 25 nm, were synthesized by coprecipitation method. The magnetic properties indicate a superparamagnetic behavior, with a maximum magnetization of 16.2 emu/g, a coercive field of 22.1 Oe and a blocking temperature of 183.2 K. These MgFe2O4 nanoparticles were used to produce aqueous and solid magnetoliposomes, with sizes below 130 nm. The potential drug curcumin was successfully incorporated in these nanosystems, with high encapsulation efficiencies (above 89%). Interaction by fusion between both types of drug loaded magnetoliposomes (with or without PEGylation) and models of biological membranes was demonstrated, using FRET or fluorescence quenching assays. These results point to future applications of magnetoliposomes containing MgFe2O4 nanoparticles in cancer therapy, allowing combined magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy.
A before/after intervention study to determine impact on life cycle carbon footprint of converting from single-use to reusable sharps containers in 40 United Kingdom NHS Trusts
<p>The purpose of this study was t<span>o compare Global Warming Potential (GWP) of hospitals converting from single-use to reusable sharps containers (SSC, RSC). Does conversion to RSC result in GWP reduction? </span><span>Using BS PAS 2050:2011 principles, a retrospective, before/after intervention quantitative model together with a purpose-designed, attributional "cradle-to-grave" life cycle tool, were used to determine the annual GHG emissions of the two sharps containment systems. Functional unit was total fill-line litres (FLL) of sharps containers needed to dispose of sharps for one-year period in 40 trusts. Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions were included. Results were workload-normalised using NHS national hospital patient-workload indicators. A sensitivity analysis examined areas of data variability.</span></p> <p><span><b>Setting</b>. Acute-care hospital trusts in United Kingdom.</span></p> <p><span><b>Participants</b>. 40 NHS hospital Trusts using RSC.</span></p> <p><span><b>Intervention</b>. <span>Conversion from SSC to RSC. SSC and RSC usage details in </span><span>17 base-line trusts immediately prior to 2018 were applied to the RSC usage details of the 40 trusts using RSC in 2019</span><span>.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>The comparison of GWP </span>calculated in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO<sub>2</sub>e)<span> generated in the manufacture, transport, service and disposal of</span> 12 months, hospital-wide usage of both containment systems in the 40 trusts. </span><span>The 40 trusts converting to RSC reduced their combined annual GWP by 3267.4 tonnes CO<sub>2</sub>e (-83.9%); eliminated incineration of 900.8 tonnes of plastic; eliminated disposal/recycling of 132.5 tonnes of cardboard; and reduced container exchanges by 61.1%. GHG as kg CO<sub>2</sub>e/1000 FLL were 313.0 and 50.7 for SSC and RSC systems respectively. A sensitivity analysis showed substantial GHG reductions within unit processes could be achieved, however their impact on relevant final GWP comparison varied <5% from base comparison.</span> Adopting RSC is an example of a sustainable purchasing decision that can assist trusts meet NHS GHG reduction targets and can reduce GWP permanently with minimal staff behaviour-change.</p>
Apothecary container for dried centipedes
The wooden apothecary vessel dates back to the 18th century. There is a small signboard on the vessel with the legend specifying the contents: MILLEP(EDES). It is a type of dried crustaceans of the order Isopoda, with the name "centipedes" attached to them in Polish (despite them being phylogenetically nowhere near Myriapods). It was recommended mainly in whooping cough and the so-called hydrops (a historical medical term for the symptom of accumulating excessive amounts of fluid in the tissues and natural cavities of the body), which can possibly be considered a synonym of generalized oedema (Latin anasarca).
