Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil Water Isotopic Composition

Natural abundance stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in soil water were measured adjacent to the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) plots. There are six plots total (each 11 x 14 m). Two are warmed 5 degrees C throughout the growing season (Plots 3 and 4). Two others are warmed 5 degrees C in the growing season and have snow removed during winter to induce soil freezing and then warming cables turn on to create thaws; each soil freeze/thaw cycle includes 72-hours of soil freezing followed by 72-hours of thaw (Plots 5 and 6). Four kilometers (2.5 mi) of heating cable are buried in the soil to warm these four plots. Two additional plots serve as controls for our experiment (Plots 1 and 2). This data set includes natural abundance stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in soil water from 2018. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Hyperspectral Reflectance Imagery, August 2012

Airborne remote sensing data were acquired specifically for the EPSCoR NH Ecosystems and Society project to provide vegetation biometric and land surface optical properties at the landscape-scale. Data were acquired for targeted field sites that include the Lamprey River Watershed, the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and the Bartlett Experimental Forest, where soil and aquatic sensors are deployed and intensive field sample plots have been established to measure a range of vegetation and land surface properties. Two image data collection campaigns were deployed—one in summer (August 2012) to capture peak growing season conditions in the state, and one in winter (Feb/March 2013). This data package contains the flightlines for Hubbard Brook. Data are georegistered and atmospherically corrected to surface reflectance for August 7, 2012.

Forest Inventory of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Watershed 6 1965, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

Forest inventory surveys were initiated in 1965, repeated in 1977, and repeated at 5 year intervals after that. This is the initial data set and was collected in summer of 1965. The inventory consists of a total inventory of all trees >= 1.5 cm diameter-at-breast-height (dbh) on the whole of the watershed (13.23 ha), as measured in each of the 208 25 m x 25 m plots. Shrubs, seedlings and small saplings were also surveyed. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Temperature differences in hardwood trees using thermal dissipation probes in Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH and Bartlett Experimental Forest, NH

The MELNHE study looks at patterns of resource limitation through nutrient manipulations in three study sites in New Hampshire: Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and Jeffers Brook, located in the White Mountain National Forest. The investigation is monitoring stem diameter, leaf area, sap flow, foliar chemistry, leaf litter production and chemistry, foliar nutrient resorption, root biomass and production, mycorrhizal associations, soil respiration, heterotrophic respiration, N and P availability, N mineralization, soil phosphatase activity, soil carbon and nitrogen, nutrient uptake capacity of roots, and mineral weathering. Applications of N and P began in June 2011 and continue at the rate of 30 kg N/ha/yr (as NH4NO3) and 10 kg P/ha/yr (as NaH2PO4). This dataset was produced using thermal dissipation probes in hardwood trees. We recorded temperature differences between the reference and heated over multiple days in five hardwood species across 5 years. Sites are located in Bartlett Experimental Forest and Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in NH. The number of trees in each plot and species vary among years. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil Profile Maps and Horizon Thicknesses on Watershed 5, 1983-1998

We sampled soils prior to the whole-tree harvest of watershed 5 at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in 1983, and again in 1986, 1991, and 1998, using the quantitative soil pit method. Here we report horizon thicknesses and present hand drawn maps of the sides of a subset of the 239 sampling pits excavated over the four sampling years. Note that U.S. standard soil horizon nomenclature changed between 1983 and 1986. In nearly all cases, the 1983 horizon designations have the following equivalencies: A2 = E, Bhir = Bs, Bir = Bs1, B23 and B23+ = Bs2. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. An analysis of these data has been published in: Johnson, C.E., A.H. Johnson, T.G. Huntington, and T.G. Siccama. 1991. Whole-tree clear-cutting effects on soil horizons and organic-matter pools. Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest; concentrations of foliar metabolites: polyamines, amino acids, chlorophyll, carotenoids, soluble proteins, soluble elements, sugars, and total nitrogen and carbon in red maple (Acer rubrum) trees.

Foliage was collected in 2015 and 2017 from red maple trees at the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Analyses of foliar metabolites include polyamines, amino acids, chlorophylls, carotenoids, soluble proteins, soluble inorganic elements, sugars, and total nitrogen and carbon. There are six (11 x 14m) plots in total in this study; two control (plots 1 and 2), two warmed 5 degrees (°) Celsius (C) above ambient throughout the growing season (plots 3 and 4), and two warmed 5 °C in the growing season, with snow removal during the winter to induce soil freezing and then warmed with buried heating cables to create a subsequent thaw (plots 5 and 6). Each soil freeze/thaw cycle includes 72 hours of soil freezing followed by 72 hours of thaw. Four kilometers (km) of heating cable are buried in the soil to warm these four plots. Together, these treatments led to warmer growing season soil temperatures and an increased frequency of soil freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) in winter. Our goal was to determine how these changes in soil temperature affect foliar nitrogen (N) and carbon metabolism of red maple trees. These data were gathered as a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Stream sediment denitrification potential assays, Watershed 1 and Bear Brook

In early September 2015, we sampled five debris dams in both the stream draining W1 and Bear Brook, immediately downstream of W6. This dataset contains laboratory analysis of potential denitrification enzyme activity assays from these sediment cores. Details of the analysis method are reported in the supporting information of Marinos et al. 2018. These data are being published only in the interest of full data transparency. These data have very important limitations, discussed in the supporting information of Marinos et al. 2018, and the authors advise anybody considering reusing this data to be appropriately cautious.
