Chernobyl-level radiation exposure damages bumblebee reproduction: a laboratory experiment

The consequences for wildlife of living in radiologically contaminated environments are uncertain. Previous laboratory studies suggest insects are relatively radiation-resistant; however, some field studies from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone report severe adverse effects at substantially lower radiation dose rates than expected. Here we present the first laboratory investigation to study how environmentally-relevant radiation exposure affects bumblebee life-history, assessing the shape of the relationship between radiation exposure and fitness-loss. Dose rates comparable to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (50-400 µGy h-1) impaired bumblebee reproduction and delayed colony growth but did not affect colony weight or longevity. Our best-fitting model for the effect of radiation dose rate on colony queen production had a strongly non-linear concave relationship: exposure to only 100 µGy h-1 impaired reproduction by 30-45%, while further dose rate increases caused more modest additional reproductive impairment. Our data indicate that the practice of estimating effects of environmentally-relevant low dose rate exposure by extrapolating from high dose rates may have considerably underestimated the effects of radiation. If our data can be generalised, they suggest insects suffer significant negative consequences at dose rates previously thought safe; we therefore advocate relevant revisions to the international framework for radiological protection of the environment.

<p>Shock-tube experiments in combination with high speed Schlieren shadow photography.&nbsp;</p> <p>The shocktube setup consists of a high-pressure reservoir connected with a cylindrical tube through a diaphragm pulse valve which allows a fast release of pressurized gas into the ambient pressure tube. The high-pressure reservoir is filled with compressed air at a given overpressure with respect to ambient pressure (up to 8 bar). The pipe was either empty (i.e. with air at ambient conditions) or filled with a given amount of fluids (water or viscous fluid) or small particles. We adopted pipes with different inner diameters (3 and 4 cm) and different lengths (30 and 80 cm). Images were collected at a frame rate of 30000 fps.</p> <p>When the valve is open, a jet flow is produced, with shock and acoustic waves propagating in the atmosphere, which become visible due to the high speed Schlieren shadow photography.</p>

<p>Preliminary test with high speed camera and Schlieren shadow photography.</p> <p>Images of the injection of air bubbles in a 2D setup obtained using&nbsp;2 parallel Plexiglas&nbsp;sheets (10&nbsp;mm thickness) separated by rubber seals and filled with a distilled water. The gap between the two parallel sheets is 3 mm. Air was injected manually into the 2D setup through a capillary tube (~2&nbsp;mm diam). Frame rate of the high speed camera is 250 fps. The spherical mirror used for the Schlieren setup was 75 mm wide with a 750 mm focal length.</p>

<p>This data set contains X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) images and surface displacement data of 15 scaled laboratory experiments of analogue magma intrusion in granular material. The experimental methodology and the experimental results were described in detail by Poppe et al. (2019). Displacement data of experiment SPCTIN14 was used by Poppe et al. (2023).<br> When using the experimental imagery or their derivatives please reference at a minimum Poppe et al. (2019) and this data set (Poppe et al., 2023, Zenodo data set).<br> The included explanatory notice reproduces the experimental method and presents the structure and file types contained in this data set.</p>

Direct and indirect effects of increased bedload on algal and detrital-based stream food webs at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory from 1997 to 1999: Tile/ sediment addition experiment, Summer 1997; Chlorophyll, AFDM, inorganics (days 5-40)

Anthropogenic sedimentation poses a significant threat to stream ecosystems throughout the world. Increases in bedload (sediment transported and deposited on the stream bottom) can be especially detrimental for benthic communities. To examine how increased bedload directly and indirectly affects stream communities, we simultaneously manipulated sediment and top-down effects of macroconsumers (fishes and crayfish) in situ in two factorial experiments, one using tiles and one using leaf packs as sampling substrates. Bedload was increased by adding small amounts of sediment (2.5 x normal levels) to localized areas (0.25 m2) of an otherwise unimpacted stream. This increase in bedload had direct effects on basal resources in both the tile and leaf pack experiments. In the tile experiment algal composition was altered by sediment addition, while in the leaf pack experiment fungal biomass declined with sediment.

Caldera collapse vs inherited structures: a database of laboratory experiments

<p>This dataset presents the results of four experimental series of analogue models performed to investigate the role of inherited structures during caldera collapse. Our experimental series tested the role of one/two inherited discontinuities variously located with respect to an analogue magma chamber. Models have been analysed quantitatively by means of (i) photogrammetric Digital Elevation Model reconstruction and (ii) Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) techniques. In this dataset, we show the row data supporting modelling results.</p>

Data from: Assessing stable isotope dynamics of diapausing Calanus finmarchicus and C. hyperboreus during the overwintering period: a laboratory experiment

This study aimed at describing changes in the stable isotopic composition of late copepodite stage V (CV) subarctic marine copepods (Calanus finmarchicus and C. hyperboreus) during overwintering non-feeding periods. Diapausing stage CVs sampled in deep waters of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary (Québec, Canada) in late-September 2009 were monitored for 4 months under controlled laboratory conditions. CVs and newly moulted adults were analyzed for δ13C and δ15N signatures as well as lipid, carbon and nitrogen content. Lipids were extracted in half of the samples to compare δ13C of individuals with and without lipids and to evaluate the accuracy of mass balance correction models for δ13C under lipid influence. Lipid content generally decreased with time for both species, which was reflected in an increase of δ13C values of CVs but a constant δ13C in newly moulted adults. Accordingly, lipid extraction resulted in an increase of δ13C in CVs and adults. The mean δ13C signature of lipid-extracted individuals remained constant through the time for CVs of both species and for C. finmarchicus adults. δ15N signatures of individuals increased after lipid extraction, but this did not result in a constant value over time, suggesting that several endogenous metabolic processes affected nitrogen isotopic content. The accuracy of the mass balance model differed between species and stages, suggesting that lipid extraction should always be performed prior to applying mathematical corrections.
