Global distribution of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in mineral topsoils

<p>The hazardous oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) originate from combustion (primary sources) or post-emission conversion of PAHs (secondary sources). We evaluated the global distribution of up to 15 OPAHs in 195 mineral topsoils from 33 study sites (covering 52°N-47°S, 71°W-118°E), to identify indications of primary or secondary sources of OPAHs. The sums of the (frequently measured 7 and 15) OPAH concentrations correlated with those of the Σ16EPA-PAHs. The relationship of the Σ16EPA-PAHs concentrations with the Σ7OPAHs/Σ16EPA-PAHs concentration ratio (a measure of the variable OPAH sources) could be described by a power function with a negative exponent &lt;1, leveling off at a Σ16EPA-PAHs concentration of ca. 400 ng g<sup>-1</sup>. We suggest that below this value, secondary sources contributed more to the OPAHs burden in soil than above, where primary sources dominated the OPAHs mixture. This was supported by a negative correlation of the Σ16EPA-PAHs concentrations with the contribution of the more readily biologically produced highly polar OPAHs (octanol-water partition coefficient, log K<sub>OW</sub> &lt;3) to the Σ7OPAHs concentrations. We identified mean annual precipitation (Spearman-r = 0.33, p &lt;0.001, n = 143) and clay concentrations (r = 0.55, p &lt;0.001, n = 33) as important drivers of the Σ7OPAHs/Σ16EPA-PAHs concentration ratios. Our results indicate that at low PAH contamination levels, secondary sources contribute considerably and to a variable extent to total OPAH concentrations, while at Σ16EPA-PAHs contamination levels &gt;400 ng g<sup>-1</sup>, there was a nearly constant ratio of Σ7OPAHs/Σ16EPA-PAHs (0.08±standard error 0.005, n = 80) determined by their combustion sources.</p>

Evaluating the use of hair as a non-invasive indicator of trace mineral status in woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou)

<p>Trace mineral imbalances can have significant effects on animal health, reproductive success, and survival. Monitoring their status in wildlife populations is, therefore, important for management and conservation. Typically, livers and kidneys are sampled to measure mineral status, but biopsies and lethal-sampling are not always possible, particularly for Species at Risk. We aimed to: 1) determine baseline mineral levels in Northern Mountain caribou (<em>Rangifer tarandus caribou</em>; Gmelin, 1788) in northwestern British Columbia, Canada, and 2) determine if hair can be used as an effective indicator of caribou mineral status by evaluating associations between hair and organ mineral concentrations. Hair, liver, and kidney samples from adult male caribou (n­­<sub>Hair</sub>= 31; n<sub>Liver</sub>, n<sub>Kidney</sub>= 43) were collected by guide-outfitters in 2016-2018 hunting seasons. Trace minerals and heavy metals were quantified using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and organ and hair concentrations of same individuals were compared. Some organ mineral concentrations differed from other caribou populations, though no clinical deficiency or toxicity symptoms were reported in our population. Significant correlations were found between liver and hair selenium (rho=0.66, p&lt;0.05), kidney and hair cobalt (rho=0.51, p&lt;0.05), and liver and hair molybdenum (rho=0.37, p&lt;0.10). These findings suggest that hair trace mineral assessment may be used as a non-invasive and easily-accessible way to monitor caribou selenium, cobalt, and molybdenum status, and may be a valuable tool to help assess overall caribou health.</p>

Olivine Phenocryst morphology with glass and mineral inclusions

<p>The x-ray micro computed-tomography (micro-CT) model of this olivine crystal was acquired on a 2010 GE phoenix v|tome|x s240 system using a 180 KV nanofocus transmission X-ray tube. The olivine was placed in a low density polyethylene pipette. To achieve the smallest voxel size (nominally 1.1 &micro;m), the sample was placed as close to the x-ray source as possible without collision (&lt;1mm). In preliminary scans, we determined that the sample was blurring due to thermal expansion from the X-ray source. To combat this we placed the sample in the X-ray beam ~30 minutes prior to acquiring images so that a steady state could be reached.&nbsp;To further reduce image blur and ensure a crisp x-ray images the primary electron beam was manually focused immediately prior to data acquisition. A low accelerating voltage (40 kV) and molybdenum x-ray target was chosen to enhance compositional contrast in the x-ray images. Detector acquisition timing (333 ms per image), and X-ray source current &nbsp;(325&nbsp;&micro;A) was optimized&nbsp;to reduce image noise in the densest part of the image while ensuring a total acquisition time under 1 hour. A thin (0.1 mm) copper filter was placed in front of the x-ray beam to attenuate the beam hardening effects of polychromatic x-ray sources in CT images. For each image used in the tomographic reconstruction four images were averaged to reduce signal noise.&nbsp; A total of 1200 images were acquired for the tomographic reconstruction, resulting in an angular step size of 0.3˚. X-ray images were reconstructed into computed tomography volumes using GE Phoenix Datos software (version 2.3.2), a median kernel filter (3x3) was applied to the images prior to reconstruction to reduce signal noise, a beam hardening correction was applied to reduce artifacts in the Feldkamp cone beam reconstruction algorithm.&nbsp;Volumetric data was segmented and animated using Volume Graphics VG Studio Max 3.4 as well as the Fiji distribution of ImageJ.</p> <p>The olivine grain is from the terminal scoria deposits of the 1932 eruption of Volc&aacute;n Quizapu, Chile. The grain demonstrates the complexities associated with studying olivine (green) and its inclusions (here melt inclusion (dark red)&nbsp;with vapor bubble (teal) and oxide inclusion (yellow)). The olivine is partially enclosed in silicate glass (gray) and adhering plagioclase (white) crystals. This model&nbsp;shows the morphology of this olivine crystal that includes subgrains and melt channels (often referred to as embayments or re-entrants) that connect from the outside of the grain and extend into the grain&rsquo;s center.</p>

Hydrothermal conditions determine soil potential net N mineralization rates in arid and semi-arid grasslands

<p>Soil net nitrogen (N) mineralization is a key biogeochemical process influencing plant available N and net primary productivity (NPP) in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the spatial variations and controlling factors of soil net N mineralization (RPNM) in arid and semi-arid grasslands are less studied and unclear. In this study, we investigated the soil RPNM by performing a laboratory incubation experiment. Soil samples were collected from 30 sites in three east-west transects on the Inner Mongolia Plateau (MP), Loess Plateau (LP), and Tibetan Plateau (TP) along a 3,200 km arid and semi-arid grassland gradient, with each transect containing three different grassland types (meadow steppe, typical steppe, and desert steppe, respectively). Results showed that the average RPNM values ranged from -0.37 to 1.29 mg N kg–1 d–1, with a significantly lower RPNM found in the desert steppe (0.08 ± 0.01 mg N kg–1 d–1) compared with those in the meadow steppe (0.30 ± 0.03 mg N kg–1 d–1) and in the typical steppe (0.33 ± 0.03 mg N kg–1 d–1) in the MP and LP transects (p &lt; 0.05). This difference could be explained by variations in climatic and soil factors, such as hydrothermal index (HT), the soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM) and precipitation. However, no significant differences in RPNM were found among different grassland types in the TP transect, possibly due to the similarly low microbial activity, as indicated by the MBC values. Across all three grassland transects, HT, SOM, and microbial variables were the major factors controlling RPNM, which together explained 20.7% of the variation in RPNM. Further SEM analysis indicated HT was an integral predictor of RPNM, directly or indirectly via SOM, under different conditions of precipitation and temperature. Our findings provide field evidence and parameters for biogeochemical cycling to better predict future N transformation processes under changing precipitation and temperature regimes across a wide range of arid and semi-arid grassland ecosystems.</p>

The frequent occurrence and metabolic versatility of Marinifilaceae bacteria involved in organic matter mineralization as a key member in global deep sea

<p>Transfer of animal and plant detritus of both terrestrial and marine origins to the deep sea occurs on the global scale. Microorganisms play an important role in mineralizing them therein, yet to identify <em>in situ</em>. To observe key bacteria involved, we conducted long-term <em>in situ</em> incubation and found the family <em>Marinifilaceae </em>occurred as one of the most predominant bacteria thriving on the new inputs of plant and animal biomasses in the deep sea of both marginal and oceanic areas. This taxa is diverse and ubiquitous in marine environments. A total of 11 MAGs belonging to MF were retrieved from metagenomic data and diverged into four subgroups based on the phylogenomic tree. We described the metabolic features and <em>in situ</em> metabolizing activities of different MF subgroups via the metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data. One representative subgroup MF-2 dominated plant detritus-enriched cultures and specialized in polysaccharide degradation and lignin oxidation. Intriguingly, they encode nitrogen fixation pathway to compensate for the shortage of nitrogen sources inside the plant detritus. In contrast, those dominating the animal tissue-supported microbiomes were more diverse and formed three subgroups, which distinguished themselves from MF-2 in carbon and nitrogen metabolisms. Despite these metabolic divergences of MF lineages, they harbored anaerobic processes for energy&nbsp;conservation via organic fermentation, anaerobic respiration via iron and manganese reduction, and/or dimethyl sulfoxide reduction. These results highlight the role of <em>Marinifilaceae</em> bacteria neglected before in organic matter mineralizing in marine environments coupling carbon and nitrogen cycling with metals and other elements.</p>
