Data for: Extensive coral mortality and critical habitat loss following dredging and their association with remotely-sensed sediment plumes

This work describes impacts to coral reefs surrounding the 2013-2015 dredging of the Port of Miami based on data collected before, during, and after dredging by Dial Cordy and Associates (DCA) on behalf of Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, the dredging contractors for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and for the Port of Miami (Miami-Dade County). A front page for this repository can be accessed at jrcunning.github.io/pom-dredge containing rendered R Markdown detailing all analyses conducted as part of this work.

Data for Avolio et al. Making sense of multivariate community responses in global change experiments

Ecological communities are being impacted by global change worldwide. Experiments are a powerful tool to understand how global change will impact communities by comparing control and treatment replicates. Communities consist of multiple species and their associated abundances making multivariate methods a powerful approach to studying community compositional differences between control and treated replicates. Dissimilarity metrics are a commonly employed multivariate measure of compositional differences; however, while highly informative, dissimilarity metrics do not elucidate the specific ways in which communities differ. Integrating two multivariate methods, dissimilarity metrics and rank abundance curves has the potential to detect complex differences based on dissimilarity metrics and detail the how these differences came about through differences in richness, evenness, species ranks, or species identity. Here we use a database of 106 global change experiments located in herbaceous ecosystems and explore how patterns of ordinations based on dissimilarity metrics relate to rank abundance-curve based differences. We find that combining dissimilarity metrics alongside rank abundance curve-based measures clarify how global change treatments are altering communities. We find that when there is no difference in community composition (no distance between centroids of control and treated replicates), there are rarely differences in species ranks or species identities and more often differences in richness or evenness alone. In contrast, when there are differences between centroids of control and treated replicates, this is most often associated with differences in ranks either alone or co-occurring with differences in richness, evenness, or species identities. We suggest that integrating these two multivariate measures of community composition results in a deeper understanding of how global change impacts communities.

National-scale, remotely sensed lake trophic state (LTS-US) 1984-2020

Lake trophic state is a key water quality property that integrates a lake’s physical, chemical, and biological processes. Despite the importance of trophic state as a gauge of lake water quality, standardized and machine readable observations are uncommon. Remote sensing presents an opportunity to detect and analyze lake trophic state with reproducible, robust methods across time and space. We used Landsat surface reflectance and lake morphometric data to create the first compendium of lake trophic state for more than 56,000 lakes of at least 10 ha in size throughout the contiguous United States from 1984 through 2020. The dataset was constructed with FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible) in mind, where data are publicly available, relational keys from parent datasets are retained, and all data wrangling and modeling routines are scripted for future reuse. Together, this resource offers critical data to address basic and applied research questions about lake water quality at a suite of spatial and temporal scales.

Tree ring, leaf mining, climate, and remote sensing data from aspen leaf miner survey sites: I - Basal area increment and d13C

This dataset contiains basal area increment (BAI) and d13C chronologies of 47 aspen cored in 2016 across four sites where leaf mining has been documented since 2004. Chronologies of BAI extend as far back as 1957 and up to 2015. Tree ring d13C chronologies extend from 2004-2015 and were measured on 23 trees from two fo the four sites.
