Impacts of nutrient addition on soil carbon and nitrogen stoichiometry and stability in globally-distributed grasslands
Global changes will modify future nutrient availability with implications for grassland biogeochemistry. Soil organic matter (SOM) is central to grasslands for both provision of nutrients and climate mitigation through carbon (C) storage. While we know that C and nitrogen (N) in SOM can be influenced by greater nutrient availability, we lack understanding of nutrient effects on C and N coupling and stability in soil. Different SOM fractions have different functional relevance and mean residence times, i.e., mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) has a higher mean residence time than particulate organic matter (POM). By separating effects of nutrient supply on the different SOM fractions, we can better evaluate changes in soil C and N coupling and stability and associated mechanisms. To this end, we studied responses of C and N ratios and distributions across POM and MAOM to 6-10 years of N, phosphorus (P), potassium and micronutrients (K+µ), and combined NPK+µ additions at 11 grassland sites spanning 3 continents and globally relevant environmental gradients in climate, plant growth, soil texture, and nutrient availability. temporalNEON: Repository containing raw and cleaned-up organismal data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) useful for evaluating the links between change in biodiversity and ecosystem stability
Organismal data include the following taxonomic groups: small mammals, fish, ground beetles, and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Data were retrieved from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) database in November 2020. We submit both raw data retrieved from NEON as .rds files, R code used to process these data, as well as processed data as .csv files.
Stream fish assemblage stability in a southern Appalachian stream at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory from 1984 to 1995
Stream fish abundance data was collected seasonally in three 30m sections of stream from 1984 to 1995. Population estimates were obtained using electrofishing (3 pass removal). Habitat availability measurements were recorded biannually along with the electrofishing data starting in fall 1988. Data was collected each fall and spring from 1988-1995, in order to examine changes in fish assemblage structure along the habitat gradient. We used strong inference with Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC) to assess the processes capable of explaining long-term (1984–1995) variation in the per capita rate of change of mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi) populations in the Coweeta Creek drainage (USA). We sampled two fourth- and one fifth-order sites (BCA [uppermost], BCB, and CC [lowermost]) along a downstream gradient, and the study encompassed extensive flow variation.
Orbital Stability of Circumstellar Planets in Binary Systems
<p>Tar archives of simulations for circumstellar planets orbiting a range of host binary stars, where the archives are delineated by the mutual inclination in the filename. Each file in the archive has the assumed mass ratio, mu, and binary eccentricity, e_bin, in the file name as a tuple (mu,e_bin). Tools in python to manipulate and plot the data are provided through a GitHub repository, https://github.com/saturnaxis/ThreeBody_Stability. Inside each file contains a comma delimited text file, where the columns are the initial semimajor axis ratio, the initial phase of the planet, the maximum planetary eccentricity attained over the simulation time, the minimum planetary eccentricity attained over the simulation time, and the collision/escape time. Collisions are defined as collisions with either star, where the escape is when the radial distance of the planet exceeds 200 AU.</p>
Data from: Honeybee microbiome is stabilized in the presence of propolis
<p>Honey bees have developed many unique mechanisms to help ensure the proper maintenance of homeostasis within the hive. One specific method includes the collection of antimicrobial plant resins and wax to form propolis, which is deposited throughout the hive. Propolis is believed to play a significant role in reducing disease load in the colony due to its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. However, little is known on how propolis may be interacting with the commensal bacteria of the hive and if propolis alters the microbial community structure. In this study, we demonstrate that propolis appears to maintain a stable microbial community composition and reduce the overall diversity of the total honey bee microbiome. Several key members of the honey bee gut microbiota were significantly altered in the absence of propolis suggesting that it may play an important role in maintaining favorable levels of commensal bacteria. Overall, these findings demonstrate that propolis may help to maintain honey bee colony microbial health by limiting changes to the overall microbial community.</p>
CoP vs. CoM stabilization strategies: the tightrope balancing case
<p>This study proposes a generalization of the ankle and hip postural strategies to be applied to the large class of skills that share the same basic challenge of defeating the destabilizing effect of gravity on the basis of the same neuromotor control organization, adapted and specialized to variable number of degrees of freedom, different body parts, different muscles, and different sensory feedback channels. In all the cases we can identify two crucial elements (the CoP - Center of Pressure and the CoM - Center of Mass) and the central point of the paper is that most balancing skills can be framed in the CoP-CoM interplay and can be modeled as a combination/alternation of two basic stabilization strategies: the standard well investigated COPS (or CoP strategy, the default option), where the CoM is the controlled variable and the CoP is the control variable, and the less investigated COMS (or CoM strategy), where CoP and CoM must exchange their role because the range of motion of the CoP is strongly constrained by environmental conditions.</p> <p>The paper focuses on the tightrope balancing skill where sway control in the sagittal plane is modeled in terms of the COPS while the more challenging sway in the coronal plane is modeled in terms of the COMS, with the support of a suitable balance pole. Both stabilization strategies are implemented as state-space intermittent, delayed feedback controllers, independent of each other. Extensive simulations support the degree of plausibility, generality, and robustness of the proposed approach.</p>
