A theory of oligogenic adaptation of a quantitative trait
<p>Rapid phenotypic adaptation is widespread in nature, but the underlying genetic dynamics remain controversial. Whereas population genetics envisages sequential beneficial substitutions, quantitative genetics assumes a collective response through subtle shifts in allele frequencies. This dichotomy of a monogenic and a highly polygenic view of adaptation raises the question of a middle ground, as well as the factors controlling the transition. Here, we consider an additive quantitative trait with equal locus effects under Gaussian stabilizing selection that adapts to a new trait optimum after an environmental change. We present an analytical framework based on Yule branching processes to describe how phenotypic adaptation is achieved by collective changes in allele frequencies at the underlying loci. In particular, we derive an approximation for the joint allele-frequency distribution at threshold levels of the trait mean as a comprehensive descriptor of the adaptive architecture. Depending on the model parameters, this architecture reproduces the well-known patterns of sequential, monogenic sweeps, or of subtle, polygenic frequency shifts. Between these endpoints, we observe oligogenic architecture types that exhibit characteristic patterns of partial sweeps. We find that a single compound parameter, the population-scaled background mutation rate Θ<sub>bg,</sub> is the most important predictor of the type of adaptation, while selection strength, the number of loci in the genetic basis, and linkage only play a minor role.</p>
Linguistic Matrix Theory Data
<p>Dataset for analyzing the statistics of ensembles of matrices in the Linguistic Matrix Theory programme introduced in arxiv:1703.10252. A Python script (ratios.py) for testing the fit of the matrix data to the 13-parameter permutation invariant Gaussian matrix models introduced in arXiv:1809.07559 is given.</p> <p>Two Sage+Jupyter notebooks are provided that assist in the computation of theoretical higher-order moments based on permutation invariant matrix model along with a set of Python functions (MFunctions.py) that are useful for further Gaussianity tests as well as computational language tasks. The dataset was constructed by D. Kartsaklis for arXiv:1703.10252, ratios.py was developed for arXiv:1912.10839 and the Sage+Jupyter code was developed in arXiv:2104.03707. MFunctions.py was developed in arXiv:2202.06829.</p>

Signal detection theory applied to giant pandas: Do pandas go out of their way to make sure their scent marks are found?
<p><span>Inter-animal communication allows signals released by an animal to be perceived by others. Scent-marking is the primary mode of such communication in giant pandas </span><span>(<em>Ailuropoda melanoleuca</em>)</span><span>. Signal detection theory propounds that animals choose the substrate and location of their scent marks so that the signals released are transmitted more widely and last longer. We believe that pandas trade off scent-marking because they are an energetically marginal species and it is costly to generate and mark chemical signals. Existing studies only indicate where pandas mark more frequently, but their selection preferences remain unknown. This study investigates whether the marking behavior of pandas is consistent with signal detection theory. Feces count, reflecting habitat use intensity, was combined with mark count to determine the selection preference for marking. The results showed that pandas preferred to mark ridges with animal trails and that most marked tree species were locally dominant. In addition, marked plots and species were selected for lower energy consumption and a higher chance of being detected. Over 90% of the marks used were the longest-surviving anogenital gland secretion marks, and over 80% of the marks were oriented toward animal trails. Our research demonstrates that pandas go out of their way to make sure their marks are found. This study not only sheds light on the mechanisms of scent-marking by pandas but also guides us toward more precise conservation of the panda habitat.</span></p>

Nutrient enrichment undermines invasion resistance to Spartina alterniflora in a saltmarsh: Insights from modern coexistence theory
<ol> <li>The ability of native communities to maintain invasion resistance in the face of environmental changes is crucial for biodiversity conservation. However, previous studies have primarily focused on the inhibitive effects experienced by invaders, providing limited insights into the ultimate outcome of resistance.</li> <li>In this study, we integrated modern coexistence theory into biotic resistance research to investigate the impact of nutrient enrichment on the resistance of Phragmites australis marsh to Spartina alterniflora invasion in the Yangtze estuary saltmarshes of China.</li> <li>Our results demonstrated that under non-enriched conditions, successful invasion resistance was facilitated by stable coexistence between native and invasive species in the field. This prediction of invasion resistance aligned with the distribution dynamics of the two species in the Yangtze estuary saltmarshes over the past two decades. However, nutrient enrichment was likely to lead to a fundamental shift in their coexistence and ultimately, the failure of resistance.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Integrating modern coexistence theory into biotic resistance studies advances the assessment of invasion resistance by shifting from quantifying relative strength to predicting explicit resistance outcomes. Ecosystem managers can draw explicit conclusions about the potential establishment and impact of invaders by analyzing observational or experimental data within the framework of modern coexistence theory. This information aids in identifying the most efficient strategies for addressing invasive species.</li> </ol>

<p>Interactive Documentary Theory and Debate: Participation and Politics by Kate Nash, University of Leeds 7th October 2021 held in the context of the virtual lecture series, hosted by the University of Bayreuth as a part of the research project Digital Documentary Practices – Topical paradigm shifts and the potential of emerging practices to participate in public discourses. </p> <p><a href="https://did.avinus.org/virtuelle-ringvorlesung-1/ ">https://did.avinus.org/virtuelle-ringvorlesung-1/ </a></p> <p>Kate Nash has not only been working on both the documentary film and on digital media; rather she exactly investigating this relationship between documentary’s tradition and documentary’s future, analysing on presently emerging documentary practices. “There is a sense of profound change, of new possibilities, and traditions overturned”, she states in her latest publication, Interactive Documentary. Theory and Debate. And yet, in this comprehensive monograph tracing continuities as well as turning points in the evolution of digital and documentary practices, she challenges tendencies to approach interactive documentary primarily from the perspective of total novelty and change because there are more evolutionary connections than revolutionary ruptures to be found. On this basis, Kate focus in her video on Participation and Politics. </p> <p>Having come from a background in media production, specializing in documentary, Kate focusses in her research on the production, circulation and impacts of factual media – thus also documentary. Being on of the most renowned scholars in the field of interactive documentary, her research output is incredible, and a list of publications in this area is tremendous. To give you just a glimpse on the scope of issues Kate has been analyzing in this context in the last year, let me just drop some titles: Among other’s, Kate is the author of “Modes of interactivity: analysing the webdoc”, “Telling stories: the narrative study of documentary ethics” (2012), “Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries” (2014), “Strategies of interaction, questions of meaning” (2014), “What is interactivity for? The social dimension of web-documentary participation” (2015), and “I-docs and the documentary tradition: exploring questions of citizenship” (2017). Most recently, Kate has also tackled the issue of ethics and VR documentary, editing a special issue in Studies in Documentary Film, and together with Craig Hight and Catherine Summerhayes, she edited New Documentary Ecologies. Emerging Platforms, Practices and Discourses (2014). And, as already mentioned, in her latest monograph, she investigates Interactive Documentary. Theory and Debate (2021). Moreover, Kate is a Co-Editor of the documentary studies journal Studies in Documentary Film. Currently, she is developing research in the area of health and environmental documentary, focusing particularly on engagement and impact.</p>

This examination includes the rotations SO(2) and SO(3), the Pauli algebra, the Lorentz transformations, the Dirac algebra, and the U(1), SU(2), and SU(3) gauge transformations. I argue that general relativity must be generalized to Einstein-Cartan theory, so that Dirac spinors can be described within the framework of gravitation theory.</p>
