Our objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of the high payoff AM hydrid disk concept described through test specimens built up using electron beam melting (EBM).</p>

Adaptive Contingency Control: Wind Turbine Operation Integrated with Blade Condition Monitoring
We report here on first steps towards integrating systems health monitoring with adaptive contingency controls. In the scenario considered, the adaptive controller receives specific information about damage to a blade and reacts to turbulent conditions where the blade might incur additional damage. The controller uses an observer to determine when the generator set point should be lowered, thereby causing the blades to be pitched at a lower wind speed. The loads on the blades are reduced when the blades are set at larger pitch angles. This is meant to decrease the damage propagation. The adaptive contingency controller can be tuned to find the optimal trade-off between maximized damage suppression and maximized power generation. Future work will address the assessment of blade health in the presence of turbulent wind conditions.
Geometry, Grid and Boundary Condition Data for EEE Combustor and Turbine
The Energy Efficient Engine (EEE) program was funded by NASA in the mid-1970s to develop a more efficient turbofan engine for aircraft. The contractor reports and geometry of the EEE engines developed by GE and Pratt & Whitney are no longer proprietary and this is now public information. Under the NASA Transformational Tools and Technologies (TTT) project, NASA is using the EEE combustor and high-pressure turbine as a representative combustor/turbine combination to support development of fully-coupled combustor-turbine simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Geometry, CFD grid and CFD boundary condition files have been created based on publicly available information extracted from NASA contractor reports, such as NASA-CR-167980 (1982), NASA-CR-167955 (1982), NASA-CR-168274 (1984), NASA-CR-168289 (1984) and NASA-CR-168301 (1984). NASA is providing these geometry, grid and boundary condition files to other researchers to promote development of tools for the coupled analysis of aircraft combustors and high-pressure turbines.
Integrating Systems Health Management with Adaptive Controls for a Utility-scale Wind Turbine
Increasing turbine up-time and reducing maintenance costs are key technology drivers for wind turbine operators. Components within wind turbines are subject to considerable stresses due to unpredictable environmental conditions resulting from rapidly changing local dynamics. Systems health management has the aim to assess the state-of-health of components within a wind turbine, to estimate remaining life, and to aid in autonomous decision-making to minimize damage. Advanced adaptive controls can provide the mechanism to enable optimized operations that also provide the enabling technology for Systems Health Management goals. The work reported herein explores the integration of condition monitoring of wind turbine blades with contingency management and adaptive controls. Results are demonstrated using a high fidelity simulator of a utility-scale wind turbine.
Propulsion Health Monitoring of a Turbine Engine Disk using Spin Test Data
On line detection techniques to monitor the health of rotating engine components are becoming increasingly attractive options to aircraft engine companies in order to increase safety of operation and lower maintenance costs. Health monitoring remains a challenging feature to easily implement, especially, in the presence of scattered loading conditions, crack size, component geometry and materials properties. The current trend, however, is to utilize noninvasive types of health monitoring or nondestructive techniques to detect hidden flaws and mini cracks before any catastrophic event occurs. These techniques go further to evaluate materials' discontinuities and other anomalies that have grown to the level of critical defects which can lead to failure. Generally, health monitoring is highly dependent on sensor systems that are capable of performing in various engine environmental conditions and able to transmit a signal upon a predetermined crack length, while acting in a neutral form upon the overall performance of the engine system. Efforts are under way at NASA Glenn Research Center through support of the Intelligent Vehicle Health Management Project (IVHM) to develop and implement such sensor technology for a wide variety of applications [1-5]. These efforts are focused on developing high temperature, wireless, low cost and durable products.Therefore, in an effort to address the technical issues concerning health monitoring of a rotor disk, this paper considers data collected from an experimental study using high frequency capacitive sensor technology to capture blade tip clearance and tip timing measurements in a rotating engine-like-disk-to predict the disk faults and assess its structural integrity. The experimental results collected at a range of rotational speeds from tests conducted at the NASA Glenn Research Center's Rotordynamics Laboratory will be evaluated using multiple data-driven anomaly detection techniques [6-9] to identify anomalies in the disk. This study is expected to present a select evaluation of online health monitoring of a rotating disk using these high caliber sensors and test the capability of the in-house spin system.

<p>A commercial wind turbine with a 2 MW power output was installed with a condition monitoring system. Data was collected at 10-minute intervals. The data was sampled at 97656 sps for 6 seconds. Bearing envelop analysis was performed by band passing the signal between 9 to 11 KHz. Welches spectrum was used on the heterodyned signal with a DFT length of 4096, and with an overlap of 2048 points.</p>
