OCO-2 lowermost troposphere partial column
<p>This archive contains daily netcdf files with two vertically resolved partial columns from OCO-2: The LMT (lowermost troposphere) partial column contains the 5 levels nearest the Earth’s surface, and the U (upper) partial column contains the upper 15 levels (described in Kulawik et al., 2017). The bias correction of LMT was done by comparisons to aircraft observations using a similar process to the OCO-2 XCO2 bias correction (described in O’Dell et al., 2018). The LMT bias correction is described in detail in Kulawik et al. (2017, 2019). The U partial column is set by subtracting the bias-corrected LMT from the bias corrected XCO2 (with appropriate airmass factors). The LMT product contains screening additionally to XCO2. The LMT quality flag is found in lmt -> quality_flag, and all values contain good quality (0).</p>

An archive of data from Resonant Column and Cyclic Torsional Shear Tests performed on Italian Clays
<p>A large data-set of index and dynamic parameters measured from resonant column (RC) and cyclic torsional shear(CTS) tests on 170 undisturbed isotropically consolidated fine-grained specimens deriving from 90 sites in Central and Northern Italy is made available. Tests were all performed over the past 20 years at the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the Florence University using the same apparatus and following the same standardized procedures.</p> <p>The experimental data are organized in an excel file (named as “Italian_Clays_Archive.xlsx”). For each tested sample, the main physical, index and dynamic properties measured are archived with the code number of the sample (No) in the sheet named as “Dataset” as well as any information available about the borehole from which the sample has been taken. The list and the meaning of the symbols used can be found in the sheet named as “Legend”. Other sheets containing borehole stratigraphy are named as “XX-ST” (where “XX” stands as the bore-hole code, BH) and they can be recalled directly from the “Dataset” sheet. Note that stratigraphy is given in its original format, when available. However, depth and thickness of each layer can be easily deduced by the figure provided and the soil lithology is well represented by the symbol used that are those generally adopted internationally. Finally, the sheets named as "YY-CTS-STEPZ" (where “YY” and “Z” stand as the sample code, No, and the step number, respectively) contain the shear stress and strain values measured after CTS tests at different steps (i.e. amplitudes of the cyclic dynamic torsional loading applied) during the 1st, 5th, 15th, 20th and 25<sup>th</sup>.and/or and/or the corresponding shear modulus and damping ratio calculated from the same cycles.</p> <p>The selected samples were taken mostly in Holocene and Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine soil deposits at depths ranging from 1 m to 75 m below ground level and they mainly consist of normally and over-consolidated clayey silts or clays (1 < OCR < 9.4) of medium-to-high plasticity (4 < PI < 84), with very low-to high consistency (-1< Ic < 1.9) and initial void ratio, e<sub>0</sub>, ranging between 0.175 and 2.456. The database also includes some samples of organic clays of low consistency, very high water content and void ratio and low unit weight. The initial (small strain) values of shear modulus, G<sub>0</sub>, and damping ratio, D<sub>0</sub>, range between 21 MPa and 292 MPa and between 0.8% and 5.1%, respectively. The smallest and the largest shear strain values induced by RC and CTS tests are 1.9x10<sup>-5</sup> % and 6.3x10<sup>-1</sup>%, respectively.</p>

<p><strong>We conducted a comprehensive genomics study to map genomic loci determining the production of antioxidants in sorghum grains. Encouraging results were obtained and published in peer-reviewed article with impact factor (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0225979). Annotated genes harboring major effect markers (R<sup>2</sup> ≥ 15%) were identified and will be of worldwide interest. </strong></p>
Techno-economic model of Methane pyrolysis in liquid metal bubble column reactor for hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore
<p>Reducing emissions from the iron and steel industry is essential to achieve the Paris climate goals.A new system to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production is proposed in this article by coupling hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore (H-DRI) and natural gas pyrolysis on the liquid metal surface inside a bubble column reactor. If grid electricity from the EU is used, the emissions would be 435 kgCO\textsubscript{2}/tls without considering methane leakage from the extraction, storage, and transport of natural gas. Solid carbon, produced as a by-product of natural gas decomposition, finds applications in many industrial sectors, including as a replacement for coal in coke ovens. The specific energy consumption (SEC) of the proposed system is approximately 6.3 MWh per ton of liquid steel(tls).It is higher than other competing technologies,3.48 MWh/tls for water electrolysis based DRI, and 4.3-4.5 MWh/tls for natural gas-based DRI and blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) respectively. The utilization of large quantities of natural gas, where the carbon remains unused, is the major reason for the high SEC. Preliminary analysis of the system revealed that it has the potential to compete with existing technologies to produce CO\textsubscript{2}free steel, if renewable electricity is used. Further studies on the kinetics of the bubble column reactor, H-DRI shaft furnace, design, and sizing of components, along with the building of industrial prototypes are required to improve the understanding of the system performance.</p>

The Spring Festival Effect: the change of NO2 column concentration in China caused by the migration of human activities
<p>The Spring Festival is the most important holiday in China, human activity and population mobility may contribute greatly to air quality, especially in the megacities. According to the satellite-based tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) column and ground-based observational concentration of NO<sub>2</sub> in the megacities from 2013 to 2018 around the Spring Festival, we found that NO<sub>2</sub> concentration decreases obviously during the Spring Festival and rebounds after the Spring Festival in China, particularly in the megacities. The tropospheric NO<sub>2</sub> columns density around Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region decreases about 40% than the period before the festival, and it in Beijing decreases by 41.6% and rebounds by 22.3%. While under the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic progresses, the tropospheric NO<sub>2</sub> columns density in Beijing decreases by 56.2% and rebounds only by 6.8% in 2020.</p>
IASI/Metop-A formic acid total column measurements v3R (2010-2012)
<p>This dataset includes the formic acid (HCOOH) total columns (in molecules cm<sup>-2</sup>) obtained from the IASI/Metop-A satellite observations over 2010-2012, using the Artificial Neural Network for IASI (ANNI) v3R retrieval framework. The data are already filtered for clouds and poor measurement sensitivity. Description of the formic acid product and retrieval method can be found in Franco et al. (2018). Victory Column
The Victory Column is a monument in Berlin, Germany. Designed by Heinrich Strack after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Second Schleswig War, by the time it was inaugurated on 2 September 1873, Prussia had also defeated Austria and its German allies in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), giving the statue a new purpose. Votive Column in Vienna Meidling
This shrine stands in front of the house at Meidlinger Hauptstraße No. 3. In the past, the prisoner's house and the keeper's house were located at this address. It is a Tuscan column on a square base that supports a cuboid with two reliefs. One relief shows Saul's conversion to Paul. The text "Ex Voto" and the year 1687 are engraved beneath this relief. "Ex voto" suggests that a person in an emergency pledged to erect this pillar if he or she is rescued. Since the plague raged in Vienna in 1687, it is probable that the threat came from the plague. And because the name of Paul is the subject of the relief, it is assumed that the founder was a person named Paul. A "Throne of Mercy" is shown on the back of the column together with the text "RV L.R." and the year 1756. So probably in 1756 a person with the initials L.R. renovated the shrine.
