Data from: Whole-organism behavioral profiling reveals a role for dopamine in state-dependent motor program coupling in C. elegans.

<p>Animal behaviors are commonly organized into long-lasting states that coordinately impact the generation of diverse motor outputs such as feeding, locomotion, and grooming. However, the neural mechanisms that coordinate these diverse motor programs remain poorly understood. Here, we examine how the distinct motor programs of the nematode <i>C. elegans </i>are coupled together across behavioral states. We describe a new imaging platform that permits automated, simultaneous quantification of each of the main <i>C. elegans</i> motor programs over hours or days. Analysis of these whole-organism behavioral profiles shows that the motor programs coordinately change as animals switch behavioral states. Utilizing genetics, optogenetics, and calcium imaging, we identify a new role for dopamine in coupling locomotion and egg-laying together across states. These results provide new insights into how the diverse motor programs throughout an organism are coordinated and suggest that neuromodulators like dopamine can couple motor circuits together in a state-dependent manner. </p>

Degradation of gaseous unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine by vacuum ultraviolet coupled with MnO2

<p>In this study, α-, β-, and δ-MnO<sub>2</sub> were prepared by a uniform hydrothermal method and then coupled with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) for the degradation of gaseous unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH). The performance in the remove of UDMH, by-products distribution and mechanistic insights were systematically investigated. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N<sub>2</sub> adsorption/desorption, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Raman, thermal gravimetric (TG), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) to investigate the factors affecting the catalytic activity. The results showed that O<sub>2</sub> and H<sub>2</sub>O were essential for the remove of UDMH . The integrated process considerably improved the remove and mineralization of UDMH by ozone catalytic oxidation . There were more reactive oxygen species generated in the integrated process. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalysts following the order: δ-MnO<sub>2</sub> &gt;α-MnO<sub>2</sub> &gt;β-MnO<sub>2</sub>. δ-MnO<sub>2</sub> displayed the highest remove rate of 100% and CO<sub>2 </sub>concentration of 42 ppmv. The good performance of δ-MnO<sub>2</sub> was attributed to high specific surface area and surface oxygen vacancies.</p>

Does the spatial sorting of dispersal traits affect the phenotype of the non-dispersing stages of the invasive frog Xenopus laevis through coupling?

<p>Over ten weeks, we surveyed the development of <em>X. laevis</em> tadpoles in the French invasive range by&nbsp;conducting&nbsp;experiments in outdoor mesocosms and in laboratory microcosms, from free-swimming larvae to metamorphosis. We tested the effect of the location of the parental pond in the colonised range (core or periphery) on morphological traits related to dispersal (SVL and hind limb length), time to metamorphosis (development) and survival to metamorphosis. This excel spreadsheet contains the metadata and data spreadsheets used in the analysis. In addition to the first metadata sheet, the file contains nine additional sheets each containing data used in the separate analysis as outlined in the manuscript.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is the dataset and related code artifact for the article &quot;On the Practitioners&#39; Understanding of Coupling Smells -- A Grey Literature Based Grounded-Theory Study&quot;.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract of the article:</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Context: Code and design smells, such as the coupling smells examined in this article, are widely studied. Existing empirical studies reveal gaps between the scientific theory and practice, not yet explained by the scientific literature. Only basic coupling smell detection approaches and metrics seem to have been transferred to practice so far.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Objective:&nbsp; This article aims to study the current practitioner&#39;s understanding of coupling smells.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Method: Based on grey literature sources containing practitioner views&nbsp; on coupling smells, we performed a Grounded Theory (GT) study. We used UML-based modeling to precisely encode our findings and performed a rigorous analysis of our codes and models.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Results: Our results are defining factors of coupling smells, as well as smell impacts, trade-offs, relationships to other smells, relationships to practices and patterns, and fix options as perceived by practitioners. We further identified gaps in the understanding of coupling smells between science and practice, and derived opportunities and challenges for future scientific work.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Conclusions: Five lessons are presented as opportunities and challenges for future research. Our results can help scientists to get a better understanding of practitioner concerns, and practitioners to get an overview of the current perception of other practitioners on coupling smells.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Structural defence is coupled with the leaf economic spectrum across saplings of spiny species

<p>Given that the rate of resource capture constrains plant growth and defence, understanding the linkage between the leaf economic spectrum (LES) and defence and how it contributes to growth is central to predicting species performance. In spite of the prevalence of spiny plants in many plant communities, little is known about how the LES relates to defence and growth rate across these species. We grew 42 spiny species, from diverse environments, under common garden conditions for 15 weeks and measured LES (leaf N, SLA and assimilation rate), defence and growth traits. We assessed general relationships between LES and growth rate and tested whether structural defences (spines, leaf fibre and lignin content) and quantitative chemical defences (condensed tannins) are linked to the LES and growth and if different spine types (i.e. leaf spines, stipular spines, prickles and thorns), with distinct anatomical origins, partition out across the LES. We observed two independent trait axes that together explained ~68% of trait variation across species. The first axis showed that structural defences (spines, leaf fibre and lignin content) trade off with leaf productivity along the LES. Axis 2 revealed that condensed tannins is orthogonal and less integrated with the LES-structural defence axis. Bivariate trait analyses disclosed positive covariations between LES traits and sapling growth rate. All structural defence traits were negatively related to sapling growth. Across spine types, species with leaf spines were associated with the conservative end of the LES, characterized by  high structural defences and lower leaf productivity relative to other spine types. Our study shows that the LES and structural defences are coupled in spiny species such that constitutive growth – defence strategies range from fast-growing species with low allocation to defences to slow-growing species that invest heavily in structural defences (dominated by leaf spiny species).</p>

Adaptation to drought is coupled with slow growth, but independent from phenology in marginal silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) populations

Drought is one of the most important selection pressures for forest trees in the context of climate change. Yet, the different evolutionary mechanisms, and their environmental drivers, by which certain populations become more drought tolerant than others is still little understood. We studied adaptation to drought in 16 silver fir (<i>Abies alba</i> Mill.) populations from the French Mediterranean Alps by combining observations on seedlings from a large scale greenhouse experiment (N=8199) and on adult tress in situ (N=315). In the greenhouse, we followed half-sib families for four growing seasons for growth traits and bud break phenology, and tested their water stress response in a "drought until death" experiment. Adult trees in the field were assessed for δ<sup>13</sup>C, a proxy for water use efficiency and genotyped at 357 SNP loci. SNP data was used to generate a null expectation for trait divergence between populations to detect the signature of selection, and 31 environmental variables to identify the selective environment. We found that seedlings originating from populations with low soil water capacity grew more slowly, attained a smaller stature, and resisted the water stress treatment for a longer period of time in the greenhouse. Additionally, adult trees of these populations exhibited a higher water use efficiency as evidenced by δ<sup>13</sup>C. These results suggest a correlated evolution of the growth-drought tolerance trait complex. Population divergence in bud break phenology was adaptive only in the second growing season, and evolved independently from the growth-drought tolerance trait complex. Adaptive divergence in bud break phenology was principally driven by the inter- and intra-annual variation in temperature at the geographic origin of the population. Our results illustrate the different evolutionary strategies used by populations to cope with drought stress at the range limits across a highly heterogeneous landscape, and can be used to inform assisted migration programs.

Measured scattering parameters for the coupling of stochastic electromagnetic fields to transmission line networks of single-wire lines above a ground plane in a reverberation chamber

<p>This data set contains the measuremed scattering parameters between two antennas and a transmission line network under test in a reverberation chamber. The purpose of this measurement was an experimental validation of a numerical simulation model for the stochastic field coupling to a transmission line network. For the experiment, an exemplary network consisting of three single-wire lines above a ground plane was created. Different configurations of the network were tested and the average squared magnitude of the coupled voltage at the terminals of the network was analyzed and discussed.</p>
