Mastodon Pit, Gray Fossil Site, TN
Gray Fossil Site paleontologists excavated a large, complete mastodon from this pit from 2015 through 2019. The mastodon was surrounded by large boulders that often required explosives to remove. Sovutinske Iron Age Hillfort — pit No. 2 / 2020
The pit discovered during the excavations of Sovitinske Iron Age Scythian Hillfort in 2020. The shape of a pit was reconstructed using SfM-photogrammetry (64 images) for further volume calculation. Konsulivske Hillfort — Pit No. 4 profile
The pit discovered near on of the dwellings of Konsulivske Hillfort excavated during 2018 field season (trench 4). It contained a number of bones and pottery framgents, lot of burned clay and coil. The profile has been reconstructed from SfM-photogrammetry (35 images) This has been complicated due to the lack of space in the pit, however, such a workflow reveals additional opportunities in the analysis of profile, stratigraphy and pit's refill process. From Pit-to-Port Created during COMSC Placement 2021 Cardiff University This sculpture made by Jon Buck and John Clinch, commemorates the contribution of all of the people who formed the link in the chain between exports at Cardiff Docks and the coal mining industry in the Welsh Valleys. This sculpture was finished in 2005 and features a life size coal miner leaning against a dram containing a pit winding wheel, smoking factory chimney and ship, symbolical of the cycle of the coal industry which the docklands are well known for. The reconstruction is not 100% accurate. This 3D model was made using Meshlab and edited using Autodesk recap photo. Soil profile pits, carbon and vegetation data of an old Anogeissus grove in Mole National Park, Ghana
<p>Formation of forest islands in West Africa has been linked to anthropogenic soil improvement resulting in luxuriant tree growth in otherwise open savanna landscapes. However, there is limited understanding of how such unique ecosystems modulate soil carbon (C) dynamics and nutrient cycling. In this study, we report soil nutrient characteristics and two distinct soil organic carbon pools of Anogeissus grove (forest island) associated with abandoned village sites of the Mole National Park in the Guinea savanna or tropical continental climatic zone of Ghana, taking opportunity of a previously published study in Biotropica in 1978. We compared present-day differences in soil characteristics between the previously studied forest grove and adjoining open savanna in the Park and evaluated vegetation dynamics since first measurement in 1974. Overall, we see changes related to self-thinning and expansion of the grove on a decadal timescale. Soil organic matter and available phosphorus contents were greater in the grove and increased by 19.6 and 18.7%, respectively over time, showing persistence after four decades. Mineral associated organic carbon (MAOC) differed significantly (p<0.05) between the vegetation types, being 3.44% in the grove and 2.34% in the savanna. The grove was ca. 25% greater in particulate organic carbon (POC) content than the savanna. In both vegetation types, >55% of carbon was stabilized in the mineral fraction. Our study demonstrates long-term human impacts on soil and vegetation and offers a clear nature-based solution for climate change mitigation through sustainable land management by indigenous people towards achievement of the '4p1000' initiative.</p>
Supplementary information for: The artefactual branch effect and phylogenetic conflict: Species delimitation with gene flow in mangrove pit vipers (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus-erythrurus complex)
<p>Mangrove pit vipers of the <em>Trimeresurus</em> <em>purpureomaculatus</em>-<em>erythrurus</em> complex are the only species of viper known to naturally inhabit mangroves. Despite serving integral ecological functions in mangrove ecosystems, the evolutionary history, distribution, and species boundaries of mangrove pit vipers remain poorly understood, partly due to overlapping distributions, confusing phenotypic variations, and the lack of focused studies. Here, we present the first genomic study on mangrove pit vipers and introduce a robust hypothesis-driven species delimitation framework that considers gene flow and phylogenetic uncertainty in conjunction with a novel application of a new class of speciation-based delimitation model implemented through the program Delineate. Our results showed that gene flow produced phylogenetic conflict in our focal species and substantiated the artefactual branch effect where highly admixed populations appear as divergent nonmonophyletic lineages arranged in a stepwise manner at the basal position of clades. Despite the confounding effects of gene flow, we were able to obtain unequivocal support for the recognition of a new species based on the intersection and congruence of multiple lines of evidence. This study demonstrates that an integrative hypothesis-driven approach predicated on the consideration of multiple plausible evolutionary histories, population structure/ differentiation, gene flow, and the implementation of a speciation-based delimitation model can effectively delimit species in the presence of gene flow and phylogenetic conflict.</p>
Numerical simulation of groundwater flow in backfilled open-pits for BDZ deviation performance
<p>This dataset contains simulated groundwater flow entering multiple backfilled open-pits with mine wastes (flowrate results) and some Python script to visualize the data.<br> The objective was to predict the blast damage zone (BDZ) created by mine excavation on the flowrate through the backfilled wastes.<br> Flowrates were obtained by 3D numerical simulation using PFLOTRAN finite volume code (www.pflotran.org).<br> Conceptual model of the BDZ and equivalent permeability was derived from Rousseau and Pabst (in press) and Mourzencko et al. Snow pit dataset from "Comparison of snowpack structure in gaps and under the canopy in a humid boreal forest"
<p>This original dataset contains snow pit measurements collected at Montmorency Forest (47.29°N, 71.17°W) from 22 November, 2018 to 6 June, 2019. The study site is a balsam fir – whit birch stand on a 12° slope of north-east aspect. FS1200 Palatki Roasting pit Panel 27 petroglyph
This area of petroglphs and pictographs in the Palatki Heritage Site is considered at risk due to natural erosion of the rock surface. The model area is approximately 8 x 8 inches. The Red Rock District of the Coconino Forest was awarded the 2017 Chief's Award for Fostering Volunteerism and Service. The national level award acknowledges the Forest Service and Friends of the Forest development and implementation of new technologies to assist in protecting and preserving the forest. The application of 3D photographic models in the documentation and evaluation of archaeological sites is one of those techniques being used.
