Combined palaeohistological and isotopic inferences of thermometabolism in extinct Neosuchia, using Goniopholis and Dyrosaurus (Pseudosuchia: Crocodylomorpha) as case studies

<p>The evolution of thermometabolism in pseudosuchians (Late Triassic to the present) remains a partly unsolved issue: extant taxa (crocodilians) are ectothermic, but the clade was inferred ancestrally endothermic. Here we inferred the thermometabolic regime of two neosuchian groups, Goniopholididae (Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous) and Dyrosauridae (Middle Cretaceous to Late Eocene), close relatives of extant crocodilians, in order to elucidate the evolutionary pattern across Metasuchia (Early Jurassic to the present), a clade comprising Neosuchia (Early Jurassic to the present) and Notosuchia (Middle Jurassic until Late Miocene). We propose a new integrative approach combining geochemical analyses to infer body temperature from the stable oxygen isotope composition of tooth phosphate and palaeohistology and phylogenetic comparative methods to infer resting metabolic rates (RMR) and red blood cells dimensions. †Dyrosaurus and †Goniopholis share with extant crocodilians similar lifestyles, body forms, bone tissue organization, body temperatures (Tb), metabolic rates and red blood cells dimensions. Consistently, we infer ectothermy for †Dyrosaurus and †Goniopholis with the parsimonious implication of neosuchians and metasuchians as being primitively ectothermic.</p>

Using genomics to guide seed-sourcing at the right taxonomical level for ecological restoration projects: the complex case of Carex bigelowii s.lat. in Norway

<p>There is a growing demand for ecological restoration using suitable seeds following international standards or national legal demands for local seed-sourcing. However, before selecting the appropriate geographic origin of seeds, it is vital to explore taxonomic complexity related to the focal taxa. We used ddRAD-seq to screen genomic diversity within <i>Carex bigelowii</i> s.lat. focussing on Norway. This species complex is considered a candidate for seeding, but presents considerable morphological, ecological, and genetic variation. The genetic structure of 132 individuals of <i>C</i>. <i>bigelowii</i> s.lat., including <i>C</i>. <i>nigra</i> as an outgroup, was explored using ordinations, clustering analyses, and a genetic barrier algorithm. Two highly divergent clusters were evident, supporting the recognition of two taxonomic units '<i>C</i>. <i>dacica</i>' and 'subsp. <i>bigelowii</i>'. Previously defined seed-sourcing regions for <i>C</i>. <i>bigelowii</i> s.lat. did not consider the known taxonomic complexity, and therefore interpreted the overall genetic structure as seed-sourcing regions, not taxa. We estimated genetic neighbourhood sizes within each taxon to be 100-150 km and 300 km, respectively, indicating species-specific delimitations of local seed-sourcing regions. Frequent hybrids, local genetic distinctiveness, and suggested ecotypes add complexity to the discussed seed-sourcing regions. Our results show how genomic screening of diversity and structure in a species complex can alleviate the taxonomic impediment, inform practical questions and legal requirements related to seed-sourcing, and together with traditional taxonomic work provide necessary information for a sound management of biodiversity.</p>

Using inbreeding to test the contribution of non-additive genetic effects to additive genetic variance: A case study in Drosophila serrata

<p>Additive genetic variance, <em>V<sub>A</sub></em>, is the key parameter for predicting adaptive and neutral phenotypic evolution. Changes in demography (e.g., increased close-relative inbreeding) can alter <em>V<sub>A</sub></em>, but how depends on the, typically unknown, gene action and allele frequencies across many loci. For example, <em>V<sub>A</sub></em> increases proportionally with the inbreeding coefficient when allelic effects are additive, but larger (or smaller) increases can occur when allele frequencies are unequal at causal loci with dominance effects. Here, we describe an experimental approach to assess the potential for rare, recessive alleles to inflate <em>V<sub>A</sub></em> under inbreeding. Applying a powerful paired pedigree design in <em>Drosophila serrata</em>, we measured 11 wing traits on half-sibling families bred via either random or sibling mating, differing only in homozygosity (not allele frequency). Despite close inbreeding and substantial power to detect small <em>V<sub>A</sub></em>, we detected no deviation from the expected additive effect of inbreeding on genetic (co)variances. Our results suggest the average dominance coefficient is very small relative to the additive effect, or that allele frequencies are relatively equal at loci affecting wing traits. We outline the further opportunities for this paired pedigree approach to reveal the characteristics of <em>V<sub>A</sub></em>, providing insight into historical selection and future evolutionary potential.</p>

Data for: The role of ecdysis in repair of an attachment system: a case study using geckos

<p>Skin provides functions such as protection and prevention of water loss. In some taxa, the outer surface of skin has been modified to form structures that enable attachment to various surfaces. Constant interaction with surfaces is likely to cause damage to these attachment systems and reduce function. It seems logical that when skin is shed via ecdysis, its effectiveness will increase, through repair of damage or other rejuvenating mechanisms. We address two questions using three diplodactylid geckos as model species. (1) Does repeated mechanical damage affect clinging ability in geckos to the point that they cannot support their own body weight? (2) Does use without induced damage reduce effectiveness of the attachment system, and if so, does ecdysis restore clinging ability? We found that repeated damage reduced clinging ability in all three species, although at different rates. Additionally, use reduced clinging ability over time when no apparent damage was incurred. Clinging ability increased after ecdysis in all three species, both when damage was specially induced, and when it was not. After normal use without induced damage, the increase in clinging ability after ecdysis was statistically significant in two of three species. Our findings show that use decreases clinging ability, and mechanical damage also affects geckos' capacity to exert shear forces consistently. Thus, ecdysis improves clinging ability both in scenarios where damage is induced and more generally. In addition to the physiological functions provided by skin, our study highlights an important function of ecdysis in a speciose vertebrate group.</p>

Design Of A Condition Monitoring System (CMS) For A Gas Compressor Using Shell Bonny Terminal As A Case Study

<p><strong>Subcontracted</strong> <strong>Researcher</strong> <strong>&amp;</strong> <strong>Field</strong> <strong>Electrical</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Electronics</strong> <strong>Engineer</strong>, <em>Shell</em> <em>Bonny</em> <em>Terminal, Nigeria</em>&mdash; 2013</p> <p>I served as a Hooks Electric subcontracted researcher and field electrical and electronics engineer at Shell Bonny Terminal, spearheading a groundbreaking project to design and construct a state-of-the-art software condition monitoring system (CMS) for a gas compressor. In addition to my technical responsibilities, I also took charge of integrating this innovative design into the existing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) infrastructure of the plant.</p> <p>Working collaboratively with a team of four talented engineers, I successfully managed and coordinated their efforts throughout the project. Together, we leveraged our collective expertise to develop and implement a fully functional software condition monitoring system. This collaborative approach ensured that our project benefitted from diverse perspectives and skill sets, leading to a comprehensive and robust solution.</p> <p>Utilizing my proficiency in LabVIEW, C#, native C, Java and ActiveX library, I led the development of a cutting-edge data acquisition (DAQ) device for CM system. This device seamlessly captured sensor readings from the live gas compressor in real-time, while the systemic algorithm I designed skillfully tracked false alarms using fallback sensors. By monitoring critical parameters such as ambient and self-temperature, axial speed, vibration, inflow pressure, and outflow pressure, we were able to enhance the system&#39;s reliability and performance.</p> <p>Furthermore, I effectively integrated the software condition monitoring system into the plant&#39;s existing SCADA infrastructure, ensuring seamless communication and compatibility with the overall plant monitoring and control system. This integration facilitated centralized data management and provided comprehensive insights into the gas compressor&#39;s operation, enabling proactive maintenance and efficient decision-making.</p> <p>By successfully managing the team and overseeing the integration process, I ensured that our project aligned seamlessly with the plant&#39;s existing infrastructure, resulting in an optimized and harmonized system.</p> <p>Through our collective efforts, we delivered a highly sophisticated and fully integrated software condition monitoring system that significantly improved the management and performance of the gas compressor at Shell Bonny Terminal.</p> <p>I have curated all the resource files that will enable anyone replicate our work. This is shared under the CC-by-4 license.</p> <p>The LabVIEW codes are documented in Work.zip file and all manuals and equipment specifications have been uploaded. I have created a test bench to help anyone quickly test the LabVIEW software in simulation mode.&nbsp;</p> <p>I have also provided a slide presentation that summarizes our work, including methodologies and results.</p>

Data to D3.3 - Institutional arrangements of water supply, distribution and uses within and across case studies -identifying the barriers and drivers in place

<p>The transition towards a water circular economy (WCE) in the sense of water reuse may generate new water loops with additional challenges to water governance such as new and different types or qualities of water, new associated risks, new responsibilities,and new sets of actors involved. These challenges demand for clear-defined responsibilities, well-engaging of the various stakeholders, strong cooperation, and coordination among actors to prevent risks. Institutional arrangements, build the formal, and informal, design schemes to ensure adequate procedures and standards to better catalyse such transition. This deliverable analyses the institutional arrangements associated to the water management on the demosites, to assess their preparedness for the implementation of the new water loops as those foreseen with use of Project &Ocirc; new technologies. Using the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework, the analysis showed that the more water uses and users a new water loop involves the more critical the institutional arrangements become. Nevertheless, the institutional arrangements of the demosites do not always configure severe barriers. This is the case of Omis (Croatia) where the water reuse loop is located inside a textile company, and Eilat (Israel) where the water reuse loop is located inside amariculture centre. On the contrary, on Almendralejo (Spain) and Lecce (Italy), there are different players involved in the management ofthe water loop,andinstitutional arrangements appear more critical. Among the different institutional design principles, the clearly defined boundaries of responsibilities among stakeholders, the congruence between appropriation and provision rules and local conditions, raise more concerns on the case studies and call for the attention of future research on water circular economy. Fairly share of cost, benefits, and risks, dedicated graduated sanctions, conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms also deserve particular attention given the limited awareness of stakeholders of their features and influence for a successful implementation of demosites. Trust building, stakeholder empowerment and investment on transparency mechanisms related to water monitoring and sharing of communities and environmental benefits and costs of water reuse may be powerful approaches to implement water circular economy.</p>
