Influence of suspended particulate matter on salinity measurements
<p>Data from a laboratoy study on the influence of suspended particulate matter on salinity measurements. Measurements were carried out in mud samples from the German Wadden Sea and from the Ems estuary.</p> <p>Prior to the measurements, the mud samples were desalinated. This was done with a combination of dialysis tubing and distilled water over several days.</p> <p>The desalted mud was then diluted with distilled water to produce solutions with sediment concentrations of 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200 and 300 g/l. Then the salintiy was stepwise increase by adding NaCl. The adjusted salinities were 0, 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 g/kg. The conductivties were measured in each step with a handheld salinometer (CON 3310 by WTW) and a CTD (Sea & Sun Technology CTD90). These measurements were carried out at the Institute of Geosciences at Kiel University (Germany) in September 2011.</p> <p>The data were stored in .ods format (OpenOffice / LibreOffice).</p>

Terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) and destructive measurements in short-rotation woody crops (SRWCs) in NE of Romania
<p>The data are obtained from hybrid poplar crops installed in NE Romania, managed in short rotation (SRWCs) between 5, 6, and 7 growing seasons. Planted every spring, outside the growing season, at a depth of 0.6 m in the ground with two clones: AF8 and Pannonia. Rods (2 m long cuttings) were used as planting material for a density of 1667 trees/ha (3 x 2 m). For the estimation of volume and biomass, scans and gravimetric measurements were performed on tree component parts (trunk/stem and branches). Scanning of the sample areas (3 x 10 trees for each variant) was carried out using the Z+F Imager 5010. The scanning period was outside the growing seasons. The destructive (gravimetric) method of estimating biomass involves weighing the trees (184 in total) by component parts: trunk and branches (10 g accuracy). The moisture content of the components was determined by drying the samples (wood discs and branches) at a temperature of 105 °C to a constant mass. The QSM Model in MatLab was used for tree volume reconstruction. Where d is the diameter (cm) - measured at the base and at 1 m height, h (m) is the total height - measured after harvesting by roulette and by QSM reconstruction (after TLS scan). B (kg) is the dry mass of the whole tree (tot = branches + stem) and stem, and V (litres/ dm3) is the tree volume (tot) for the whole tree and stem. Branch weight results by difference for both variables.</p>

Each sample was processed in ChromaToF(version 4.72.0.0) by LECO corp. The processing step was executed at the signal-to-noise (SN) ratio levels 100, 300, and 500 (human scent samples chromatograms).</p>

The full-turn observational simulation: measured dual effects of the path difference and beam shifts
<p>This is part of work for the preprint entitled "1887 Michelson-Morley experiment: a new analysis with computer assistance".</p> <p>Each grouped Excel form and CAD drawing under the same filename presents the detailed process to simulate the full-turn observation of the apparatus, from which the dual effects of path difference between the two arms and lateral shifts of the two beams were measured for calculating the positioning of the fringes.</p>

Electronic Distance Measurements (EDM) on active Sicilian Volcanoes (1975-2009).
<p><strong>File descriptions</strong>: This dataset includes ca. 8000 Electronic Distance Measurements (EDM) collected from 1974 to 2009 on several networks installed on Sicilian Volcanoes (Vulcano, Stromboli, Etna and Pantelleria).<br> EDM represent one of the first methods to detect ground deformation on volcanoes having been used since 1964 on Kilauea (Hawaii). It is a precise technique that uses a laser to measure the transit time of light between a base station to the reflecting prisms positioned around the volcano; the repetition of these measurements in time allows one to monitor the slope distance variations.<br> EDM is a powerful tool for volcano monitoring that has been useful to define the features of magmatic and hydrothermal sources as their volume, position, geometry, and dynamics. Moreover, this technique has been largely used on volcanoes in 70th to 90th years until the 2000s when it has been gradually abandoned in favor of GPS.<br> This dataset reports data obtained on several Sicilian volcanoes (Etna, Vulcano, Stromboli and Pantelleria) from the early ’70 to until the 2000s, in which EDM measurements have played a major role in volcanic process knowledge and that make the Sicilian volcanoes among the ones with the longest geodetic record in the World.<br> Database has been organized on Microsoft Excel files and each file reports the network name (the networks list is in Table1.xls).<br> Inside each data file (in “database” directory), there are two sheets with a sheet reporting all measured distances and a table with associated errors. The position of each benchmark is reported on specific coordinate network files in “benchmarks coordinates” directory). All the coordinates have been obtained with GPS technique, except for the Ionica network where they have been derived from paper maps and therefore suffer by a bigger approximation.<br> In the data files, rows show the measurement date, the instrument model and recorded values; in the first column, the pairs of benchmarks considered are reported.<br> The networks Etna S and Etna NE have additional files, reporting the most frequent measurements taken during the eruptive crises of July 2001 (onset of 2001 eruption) and of October 2002 (onset of the 2002-03 eruption).<br> Almost all networks were measured using both the AGA6BL and the AGA 6000 Geodimeters. In the files, the survey in which the transition from one instrument to the other took place is highlighted. In those surveys, measurements were performed with both instruments in order to maintain the time-series continuity. Furthermore, in the tables “double” measurements related also to reflectors changes or new benchmarks have been highlighted.</p>
Experimental data: Low-velocity out-of-plane impact tests on double-wythe unreinforced brick masonry walls instrumented with optical measurements
<p>This dataset includes the results of laboratory impact tests conducted on natural-scale double-wythe unreinforced brick masonry walls. The walls were spanning vertically between two reinforced concrete slabs and were subjected to low-velocity drop-weight pendulum tests in which they were repeatedly hit until the opening of a breach in the center of the wall. The tests were instrumented with both hard-wired and optical measurements, the latter consisting of high-speed cameras and digital image correlation techniques. Investigated in these tests were the out-of-plane response of the walls and their capacity to resist the impacts. The axial load applied on the top of the walls was varied for two wall configurations and monitored throughout the tests to study the effect of arching on the failure mechanism produced and number of repeated hits needed to open the breach. Of interest was also the evidence of cracking, more specifically the way it initiated on the undamaged walls and next propagated upon consecutive hits. </p> <p>The data generated from the tests is made here available and documented to support further investigations on masonry structures subjected to extreme actions. Data from: A Method for Measuring B0 Field Inhomogeneity using Quantitative DESS (qDESS)
<p><strong>Purpose</strong>: To develop and validate a method for B0 mapping for knee imaging using the quantitative Double-Echo in Steady-State (qDESS) exploiting the phase difference (∆θ) between the two echoes acquired. Contrary to a standard two-gradient echo (2-GRE) method, the phase accumulation in qDESS depends only on the first echo time.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> Bloch simulations were applied to investigate the robustness to noise of the proposed methodology and all imaging studies were validated with phantoms and in vivo simultaneous bilateral knee acquisitions. Two phantoms and 5 healthy subjects were scanned using qDESS, water saturation shift referencing (WASSR), and multi GRE sequences. ∆B0 maps were calculated with the qDESS and the 2-GRE methods and compared against those obtained with WASSR. The comparison was quantitatively assessed by exploiting pixel-wise difference maps, Bland-Altman (BA) analysis, and Lin’s concordance coefficient (ρc). For in-vivo subjects, the comparison was assessed in cartilage using average values in 6 sub-regions.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> The proposed method for measuring B0 inhomogeneities in phantom and in-vivo scans from a qDESS acquisition provided ∆B0 maps that were in good agreement with those obtained using WASSR. ∆B0 Lin’s coefficients were greater than or equal to 0.98 and 0.90 in phantoms and in vivo, respectively. The agreement between qDESS and WASSR was comparable to that of a standard 2-GRE method. Conclusion: The proposed method may allow B0 correction for qDESS T2 mapping using an inherently co-registered ∆B0 map without requiring an additional B0 measurement sequence. More generally, the method may help shorten knee imaging protocols that require an auxiliary ∆B0 map by exploiting a qDESS acquisition that also provides T2 measurements and high-quality morphological imaging.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The proposed method may allow B0 correction for qDESS T2 mapping using an inherently co-registered ∆B0 map without requiring an additional B0 measurement sequence. Aerosol measurements over the eastern China seas during 2017 to 2020
<p>This dataset contains the concentrations of trace elements and water-soluble ions in total suspended particles (TSP) over the eastern China seas on four cruises during (1) 27 March – 14 April 2017 (spring), (2) 27 June – 19 July 2018 (summer), (3) 28 December 2019 – 17 January 2020 (winter), and (4) 12 – 29 October 2020 (autumn). The air mass exposure to chlorophyll <em>a</em> (AEC), air mass retention ratio over the land (<em>R<sub>L</sub></em>), marine air mss retention ratio within the boundary layer (<em>R<sub>MBL</sub></em>), and harmonic means of boundary layer height along the air mass trajectory (BLH_traj) corresponding to each TSP sample are also presented. Measurement of Social Strain in People with Dementia: A Pre-liminary Study of the Reliability and Validity of the Negative Relationship Quality Questionnaire in Indonesia
<p>People<strong> </strong>with dementia (PWD) may exhibit symptoms that negatively affect their relationships with their families or friends which could cause social strain. The Negative Relationship Quality (NRQ) questionnaire can be used to measure social strain in PWD. There has never been an Indonesian adaptation of the NRQ. This preliminary study aimed to measure the validity and reliability of the NRQ among PWD in Indonesia (NRQ-INA). This study used a cross-sectional design. Forward–backward translation methods were conducted first. Pearson’s correlation and factor analysis were employed for the validity test. Cronbach’s alpha and test–retest were used to determine reliability. The NRQ-INA has four parallel items related to social strain that are divided into three subscales and asked to spouse/partner, family members, and friends, leading to a total of 12 questions. The results of validity testing from 60 respondents showed that all items in the NRQ-INA were strongly valid with correlation coefficients (<em>r</em>) of >0.8 (<em>p</em><0.01). Factor analysis showed a convergence with the variance explained of more than 50% for all items in each subscale, which also indicated that NRQ-INA had acceptable construct validity to measure social strain. Cronbach’s alpha values (α) were 0.926, 0.942, and 0.938 for the subscales of spouse, friends, and family members, respectively. The correlations of test–retest reliability for all items were >0.7 (<em>p</em><0.01), demonstrating a reliable NRQ-INA measurement. In conclusion, NRQ-INA had a good validity and reliability to measure social strain in PWD. Further study of the concurrent validity among PWD is still needed.</p>
