Assessing Grid Affordability for Universal Electricity Access in Sub-Saharan Africa

<p>This repository contains all the necessary original data for the publication&nbsp;<em>"Assessing Grid Affordability for Universal Electricity Access in Sub-Saharan Africa."</em> It includes the original documents detailing the tariff structures of 48 SSA countries, as well as population data, the Gini index, and gross national income per capita, which are used to simulate income distribution. Additionally, it provides calculator tools for estimating electricity bills based on the Multi-Tier Framework and assessing grid electricity affordability by comparing simulated income with electricity costs.</p> <p>The related code and result datasets supporting this publication are available through the GitHub public repository: <a href="https://rb.gy/f68tx5" target="_new" rel="noopener">https://rb.gy/f68tx5</a>.</p>

Adaptation of the Texas Christian University Organisational Readiness for Change Short Form (TCU-ORC-SF) for use in primary health facilities in South Africa

<p><b>Objectives: </b>The Texas Christian University Organisational Readiness for Change Scale (TCU-ORC) assesses factors influencing adoption of evidence-based practices. It has not been validated in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This study assessed its psychometric properties in a South African setting with the aim of adapting it into a shorter measure.</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>This study was conducted in 24 South African primary health care clinics in the Western Cape Province. The TCU-ORC and two other measures, the Organisational Readiness to Change Assessment (ORCA) and the Checklist for Assessing Readiness for Implementation (CARI) were administered. The questionnaire was re-administered after 2 weeks to obtain data on test-retest reliability. Three hundred and ninety-five surveys were completed: 281 participants completed the first survey, and 118 re-completed the assessments.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify latent dimensions represented in the data. Cronbach's alpha for each subscale was assessed and we examined the extent to which the subscales and total scale scores for the first and retest surveys correlated. Convergent validity was assessed by the correlation coefficient between the TCU-ORC, ORCA and CARI total scale scores. EFA resulted in a three-factor solution.<b> </b>The three subscales proposed are Clinic Organisational Climate (8 items), Motivational Readiness for Change (13 items), and Individual Change Efficacy (5 items) (26 items total). Cronbach's alpha for each subscale was &gt;.80. The overall shortened scale had a test-retest correlation of <i>r = </i>.80, <i>p </i>&lt; 0.01, acceptable convergent validity with the ORCA scale (<i>r</i> = .56, <i>p </i>&lt; .05), moderate convergence with the CARI (<i>r = </i>39, p<i>&lt;</i>.05) and strong correlation with the original scale (r = 0.79, p <i>&lt; </i>.05).</p> <p><b>Conclusions: </b>This study presents the first psychometric data on the TCU-ORC from a LMIC.  The proposed shortened tool may be more feasible for use in LMICs.</p>

Evaluating refugia in recent human evolution in Africa: Supplementary information

<p><em>Homo sapiens</em> have adapted to an incredible diversity of habitats around the globe. This capacity to adapt to different landscapes is clearly expressed within Africa, with Late Pleistocene <em>Homo sapiens</em> populations occupying savannahs, woodlands, coastlines and mountainous terrain. As the only area of the world where <em>Homo sapiens</em> have clearly persisted through multiple glacial-interglacial cycles, Africa is the only continent where classic refugia models can be formulated and tested to examine and describe changing patterns of past distributions and human phylogeographies. The potential role of refugia has frequently been acknowledged in the Late Pleistocene palaeoanthropological literature, yet explicit identification of potential refugia has been limited by the patchy nature of palaeoenvironmental and archaeological records, and the low temporal resolution of climate or ecological models. Here, we apply potential climatic thresholds on human habitation, rooted in ethnographic studies, in combination with high resolution model datasets for precipitation and biome distributions to identify persistent refugia spanning the Late Pleistocene (130-10 thousand years ago). We present two alternate models suggesting that between 27-66% of Africa may have provided refugia to Late Pleistocene human populations, and examine variability in precipitation, biome, and ecotone distributions within these refugial zones.</p>

Satellite telemetry data for Egyptian Geese in southern Africa

<p>This archive contains all currently available satellite GPS telemetry data for Egyptian Geese in southern Africa over the period from 2008 to 2016. The data were collected with two primary aims: (1) to understand the movement ecology of this species; (2) to better evaluate the potential role of Egyptian Geese in spreading avian influenza in southern Africa. Data colelction was undertaken in several phases. The first phase focused on just three sites (Manyame, Barberspan, Strandfontein) and occurred at the same time as a series of extensive bird counts and captures. Birds captured during this period were tested for avian influenza. We also undertook an extensive colour-ringing exercise on Egyptian Geese during the first phase. The second phase of the program involved extending our activities to some new locations (Voelvlei, Jozini) to test specific hypotheses about movement and the timing of moult, and to improve the generality of our findings. The third phase involved a translocation experiment in which six birds were moved from Barberspan to Strandfontein. The data have been analysed and published in a number of different venues and publications, as listed in the associated metadata.</p>

Hotspots in the grid: Avian sensitivity and vulnerability to collision risk from energy infrastructure interactions in Europe and North Africa

<p>Wind turbines and power lines can cause bird mortality due to collision or electrocution. The biodiversity impacts of energy infrastructure (EI) can be minimised through effective landscape-scale planning and mitigation. The identification of high-vulnerability areas is urgently needed to assess potential cumulative impacts of EI while supporting the transition to zero-carbon energy.</p> <p>We collected GPS location data from 1,454 birds from 27 species susceptible to collision within Europe and North Africa and identified areas where tracked birds are most at risk of colliding with existing EI. Sensitivity to EI development was estimated for wind turbines and power lines by calculating the proportion of GPS flight locations at heights where birds were at risk of collision and accounting for species' specific susceptibility to collision. We mapped the maximum collision sensitivity value obtained across all species, in each 5x5 km grid cell, across Europe and North Africa. Vulnerability to collision was obtained by overlaying the sensitivity surfaces with density of wind turbines and transmission power lines.</p> <p>Results: Exposure to risk varied across the 27 species, with some species flying consistently at heights where they risk collision. For areas with sufficient tracking data within Europe and North Africa, 13.6% of the area was classified as high sensitivity to wind turbines and 9.4% was classified as high sensitivity to transmission power lines. Sensitive areas were concentrated within important migratory corridors and along coastlines. Hotspots of vulnerability to collision with wind turbines and transmission power lines (2018 data) were scattered across the study region with highest concentrations occurring in central Europe, near the strait of Gibraltar and the Bosporus in Turkey.</p> <p>Synthesis and Applications: We identify the areas of Europe and North Africa that are most sensitive for the specific populations of birds for which sufficient GPS tracking data at high spatial resolution were available. We also map vulnerability hotspots where mitigation at existing EI should be prioritised to reduce collision risks. As tracking data availability improves our method could be applied to more species and areas to help reduce bird-EI conflicts.</p>

Molecular tracking and prevalence of the red colour morph restricted to a harvested leopard population in South Africa

<p>The red leopard (<em>Panthera pardus</em>) colour morph is a colour variant that occurs only in South Africa, where it is confined to the Central Bushveld bioregion. Red leopards have been spreading over the past 40 years, which raises the speculation that the prevalence of this phenotype is related to low dispersal of young individuals owing to high off-take in the region. Intensive selective hunting tends to remove large resident males from the breeding population, which gives young males the chance to mate with resident females that are more likely to be their relatives, eventually increasing the frequency of rare genetic variants. To investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying the red coat colour morph in leopards, and whether its prevalence in South Africa relates to an increase in genetic relatedness in the population, we sequenced exons of six colour coat associated genes and 20 microsatellite loci in twenty wild-type and four red leopards. The results were combined with demographic data available from our study sites. We found that red leopards own a haplotype in homozygosity identified by one non-synonymous SNP and a 1 bp deletion that causes a frameshift in the Tyrosinase Related Protein 1 (TYRP1), a gene known to be involved in the biosynthesis of melanin. Microsatellite analyses indicate clear signs of a population bottleneck and a relatedness of 0.11 among all pairwise relationships, eventually supporting our hypothesis that a rare colour morph in the wild has increased its local frequency due to low natal dispersal. This was backed by a high human-induced mortality rate (40%).</p>
