Atmospheric particle deposition on mesquite leaves in the central Arizona-Phoenix area
One technique that has been used to analyze individual atmospheric particles is automated electron microscopy. This technique gives the size, shape, and elemental composition of individual particles and has been used successfully for particles collected on filters in particle samplers. The goal of the current project is to mimic this electron microscopy analysis technique for particles deposited on leaf surfaces. Preliminary results demonstrate that electron microscopy can be used successfully to analyze individual particles on leaf surfaces. The ability to analyze atmospheric particles on leaf surfaces leads to a specific application: determining the spatial distribution of atmospheric particles throughout urban areas, namely Phoenix. Evidence from past studies in Phoenix indicate that the distribution of particle types is non-uniform, and sampling with a limited number of particle samplers is not adequate for capturing this variability. Using leaves gives the ability to sample in more locations. In a preliminary study, three sampling locations from the Phoenix area - a desert, an urban, and a suburban site - were chosen as test sites to determine whether different particle types could be observed on leaf surfaces from the different sites. The particle types from the desert site contain only elements comprising desert dust. The particle types from the urban and suburban sites consist partially of elements found in desert dust, but they also contain sulfur, which is likely from anthropogenic sources within the urban area. These preliminary results indicate that the distribution of particle types throughout an urban area can be determined from the analysis of particles on leaf surfaces. A more detailed study is in progress. Leaves from twenty-eight sampling sites around the Phoenix area have been collected and will be analyzed with a method similar to that used in the preliminary study. The cross section data are used for the production of Flood Insurance Rate Maps. The Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) show different floodplains with different zone designations. These are primarily for insurance rating purposes, but the zone differentiation can be very helpful for other floodplain management purposes. The differentiated floodplain zones are used for the production of Flood Insurance Rate Maps. Maricopa County has been subdivided into FIRM panels for the publication and distribution of FIRMs. Profile baselines are for the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM).

MASTER: Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEMx), California-Arizona, Summer 2023
This dataset includes Level 1B (L1B) and Level 2 (L2) data products from the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) instrument. The spectral data were collected during 13 flights aboard a NASA ER-2 aircraft over California, Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona, US, from 2023-04-25 to 2023-09-26. The Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEMx) research project used NASA's Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS), Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer (HyTES), and MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) instruments to collect the measurements over the country's arid and semi-arid regions, including parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, to map portions of southwest US for critical minerals. Data products include L1B georeferenced multispectral imagery of calibrated radiance in 50 bands covering wavelengths of 0.460 to 12.879 micrometers at approximately 50-meter spatial resolution. Derived L2 data products are emissivity in five bands in thermal infrared range (8.58 to 12.13 micrometers) and land surface temperature. The L1B file format is HDF-4, and L2 products are provided in ENVI and KMZ formats. In addition, the dataset includes the flight path, spectral band information, instrument configuration, ancillary notes, and summary information for each flight, and browse images derived from each L1B data file.
MASTER: Jornada Experiment - TES algorithm, Arizona-New Mexico, April-May, 2003
This dataset includes Level 1B (L1B) data products from the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) instrument. The spectral data were collected during three flights aboard a DOE B-200 aircraft over Phoenix, Arizona, and the Jornada Experimental Range (JORNEX) in New Mexico, U.S., on 2003-04-28 to 2003-05-02. These data were used to evaluate the Temperature Emissivity Separation (TES) algorithm for extracting land surface temperature and emissivity data from thermal infrared data from ASTER. This deployment was coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy's Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL) located at Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas, Nevada. Data products include L1B georeferenced multispectral imagery of calibrated radiance in 50 bands covering wavelengths of 0.460 to 12.879 micrometers at approximately 10-meter spatial resolution. The L1B file format is HDF-4. In addition, the dataset includes flight paths, spectral band information, instrument configuration, ancillary notes, and summary information for each flight, and browse images derived from each L1B data file.
