<p>This record contains raw data related to article “Charlson comorbidity index and G8 in older old adult(≥80 years) hepatocellular carcinoma patients treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy"</p> <p><strong>Introduction: </strong> Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is characterized, in Western countries, by higher incidence and mortality rates in the older adult population. In frail patients, limited therapeutic resources are available due to limited expected benefit concerning the risk of treatment-related toxicity. The aim of our study is to evaluate the role of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) in the clinical management of older old adults (age ≥ 80 years) HCC patients and to identify predictors of efficacy and toxicity.</p> <p><strong>Material and methods: </strong> Clinical and treatment-related data of older old adults HCC patients treated with SBRT at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Statistical analysis was carried out to identify variables correlated with impaired outcome and toxicity.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong> Forty-two patients were included, accounting for 63 treated tumors. Median age was 85 (range 80-91) years. Median Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and G8 scores were 10 (range 7-16) and 11 (range 8-14), respectively. SBRT was administered to a median BED10 of 103 Gy10. Median follow-up interval was 11 (range 3-40) months. Two years Local Control (LC), Progression-Free Survival (PFS), and Overall Survival (OS) were 93%, 31%, and 43%, respectively. Acute toxicity occurred in 28% (n = 13) of treatments. A G8 score > 10 was associated with improved survival (p = 0.045), while a CCI ≥10 was correlated with increased acute toxicity (p = 0.021).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong> SBRT is a safe and effective option in older old adults HCC patients. A comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is advised before treatment decisions to select optimal candidates for SBRT.</p>
Age and Gender in the Classroom: Exploring the Well-being of Older Adults in Continuing Education through a Pilot Study
<p><span>This pilot study, a precursor to more in-depth research, examines the relationship between age, gender, and well-being in older adults participating in educational programs. Employing a quantitative design, descriptive analyses, T-Tests, ANOVA, and correlations were used to assess participants' responses. The results highlight an imbalanced age and gender distribution, with a predominance of individuals aged 66-75 and a higher proportion of women. The analyses reveal significant differences in well-being based on gender and age. Correlations indicate that as age increases, so does satisfaction with past and future life, although interest in new challenging experiences decreases. This study underscores the importance of considering demographic differences when designing and implementing educational programs for older adults, emphasizing the need for specific adaptations to maximize well-being and participation</span></p>

Psychological interventions for depression among informal caregivers of older adult populations: protocol of a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Increased life expectancy has led to an increased demand for family members to provide informal care for their older relatives in the home. Many studies suggest informal caregivers are at greater risk of experiencing symptoms of depression. However, there is a lack of research examining the effectiveness of psychological interventions targeting these symptoms alongside clinical and methodological moderators potentially associated with intervention effectiveness. This review aims to address this gap and will inform the development of a psychological intervention targeting depression among adult-child caregivers of older parents, given many studies show that among informal caregivers of older adults, adult children experience specific difficulties and needs for psychological support. Further, the lack of studies targeting adult children specifically necessitates conducting this review targeting caregivers of older adults in general.</p> <p><strong>Methods and analysis:</strong> Randomised controlled trials of psychological interventions targeting symptoms of depression among informal caregivers will be identified via a systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Excerpta Medica DataBase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and Web of Science) and supplemented by handsearching of previous systematic reviews, reference and forward citation checking, and expert contact. If possible, a meta-analysis will be conducted to examine the: (1) effectiveness of psychological interventions for depression among informal caregivers of older adults, (2) effectiveness of psychological interventions for secondary outcomes such as anxiety, stress, caregiver burden, psychological distress, quality of life, well-being and self-efficacy and (3) moderating effects of clinical and methodological factors on effectiveness. </p>

Hematopoietic progenitor cell liabilities and alarmins S100A8/A9-related inflammaging associate with frailty and predict poor cardiovascular outcomes in older adults
<p>Frailty affects the physical, cognitive, and social domains exposing older adults to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death. The mechanisms linking frailty and cardiovascular outcomes are mostly unknown. Here, we studied the association of abundance (flow cytometry) and gene expression profile (RNAseq) of stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) and molecular markers of inflammaging (ELISA) with the cardiorespiratory phenotype and prospective adverse events of individuals classified according to levels of frailty. Two cohorts of older adults were enrolled in the study. In a cohort of pre-frail 35 individuals (average age: 75 years), a physical frailty score above the median identified subjects with initial alterations in cardiorespiratory function. RNA sequencing revealed S100A8/A9 upregulation in HSPCs from the bone marrow (>10-fold) and peripheral blood (>200-fold) of individuals with greater physical frailty. Moreover higher frailty was associated with increased alarmins S100A8/A9 and inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood. We then studied a cohort of 104 more frail individuals (average age: 81 years) with multidomain health deficits. Reduced levels of circulating HSPCs and increased S100A8/A9 concentrations were independently associated with the frailty index. Remarkably, low HSPCs and high S100A8/A9 simultaneously predicted major adverse cardiovascular events at 1-year follow-up after adjustment for age and frailty index. In conclusion, inflammaging characterized by alarmin and pro-inflammatory cytokines in pre-frail individuals is mirrored by the pauperization of HSPCs in frail older people with comorbidities. S100A8/A9 is upregulated within HSPCs, identifying a phenotype that associates with poor cardiovascular outcomes.</p>
