Small mammals surveys, 1981 - 1996, Adirondack Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Program Project No. 10 by Adirondack Ecological Center of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Newcomb, New York. Environmental Data Initiative
Small mammals are important in forested ecosystems: they are key predators on seeds and invertebrates, provide food for larger predators and act as disease vectors. The objective of this study was to document small mammal abundance and population changes in managed and unmanaged forests of Huntington Wildlife Forest (HWF). Seven sites were sampled from 1981-1996. Fifty traps per site (250 total) were deployed for 4 nights and checked in the mornings. All captured small mammals were identified, sexed, weighed, and measured for reproductive condition, tagged, and brought into the lab for processing. Females with embryos or placental scars were noted in the lab. Over a five-year period, 671 deer mice; 261 woodland jumping mice, 594 southern redbacked voles, 248 short-tailed shrews, 373 masked shrews, 75 smoky shrews and small numbers of other species were captured and sexed/aged. According to Prachar and Sage (1988), weights of deer mice, redbacked voles, woodland jumping mice, short-tailed shrews, masked shrews and smoky shrews differed among years and age classes for 1983-1987. Weights differed between sexes for mice and voles but not shrews. Placental scar/embryo counts of mice and voles did not differ among years, habitats, mammal age classes or sexes. Reproductive rates of shrews exhibited patterns of fluctuation from 1983-1987.
Institutional Collaboration in the US LTER Network based on bibliometric information (1981-2018)
This is a dataset of supplementary materials of an accepted article in Bioscience entitled "Collaboration across time and space in LTER Network". It is based on the bibliography data maintained by LTER Network Office (https://www.zotero.org/groups/2055673/lter_network/items). The analysis was carried out in 2019 with the updated data collecting from individual sites. The dataset contains the basic information that the analysis relies on, and the temporal and spatial patterns of institutional collaboration in the US LTER Network.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Crayfish data include crayfish catch in cylindrical minnow traps baited with beef liver and occasional occurrence in other gear used to sample fish. Traps are placed at fyke net locations in nine study lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, Trout, Mendota, Monona, Wingra and Fish). Crayfish traps have been eliminated as gear in the Madison area lakes (Mendota, Monona, Wingra, and Fish) after 2003. Individuals are identified to species and counted. In Trout and Sparkling Lake more detailed surveys have been conducted during the summer on an ad hoc basis to track distribution and abundance of the invading species Orconectes rusticus. Additional data sets consist of pre-LTER sets (initiated in late June 1972) gathered by Capelli (Ph.D. dissertation) and Lorman (Ph.D. dissertation). Most of pre-LTER data is detailed distribution in Trout Lake, and community composition in other area lakes. Samplers are placed at fyke net and gill net locations in August and retrieved 3-4 weeks later. Macroinvertebrates are preserved in ethanol. This dataset contains counts of various groups of macroinvertebrates identified from specific samples. The majority of the identifications are at the genus level. The data table "Benthic Macroinvertebrate Codes" identifies the taxonomic group represented by each group code. Data are collected annually to enable us to track the fish assemblages of eleven primary lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, Trout, bog lakes 27-02 [Crystal Bog] and 12-15 [Trout Bog], Mendota, Monona, Wingra and Fish). Sampling on Lakes Monona, Wingra, and Fish started in 1995; sampling on other lakes started in 1981. Sampling is done at six littoral zone sites per lake with seine, minnow or crayfish traps, and fyke nets; a boat-mounted electrofishing system samples three littoral transects. Vertically hung gill nets are used to obtain two pelagic samples per lake from the deepest point. A trammel net samples across the thermocline at two sites per lake. In the bog lakes only fyke nets and minnow traps are deployed. Parameters measured include species-level identification and lengths for all fish caught, and weight and scale samples from a subset. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Mirror Lake Thermal Profiles 1981 - 2011
Numerous studies have been conducted on Mirror Lake since the mid-1960s, including extensive physical, chemical, biological, and paleoecological research (Likens 1985). This data set includes thermal profiles consisting of temperatures measured at discrete depths. Measurements were made using a hand-held instrument from a boat at an anchored buoy station located at the deepest part (11 m at full pool) of Mirror Lake during the open water (ice-free) season. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Benthos data from the Green Lakes Valley Flowage System, 1981 - 1982
Data were collected on benthic invertebrates in the Green Lakes flowage system during 1981 and 1982. Benthic organisms have been studied in terms of taxonomic community structure, diversity, and seasonal changes using rock-picking techniques in the lakes and Surber-sampling methods in the streams. Preliminary examination suggests a high degree of similarity in faunal components between years. In general, more taxa were found in streams than in lakes and there was a slight decrease in the number of taxa at most sites as elevation increased except for simuliids and chironomids in Stream 5. This trend was not noted for the Surber samples.
Snow water equivalent data for C1 Snotel, 1981 - 2010.
The U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) operates hundreds of Snotel sites throughout the western United States. One of these is on Niwot Ridge at C-1, located approximately 1.6 km, by road, from the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station at an approximate elevation of 3000 meters. The Snotel installations operate on the principle that the snowpack exerts pressure on liquid-filled stainless steel "pillows" that rest on the ground. Pressure transducers output a digital signal that is sent via radio telemetry to one of two receiving stations. The transducer output is calibrated by measuring snowpack depth and density on or about the 25th of each month from December through April. A Mt. Rose snow sampler was used to determine the depth and density of the snowpack at each of the "pillow's" four corners. These four values were averaged to determine the monthly snow water equivalent (SWE) in inches. NOTE: The LTER data portal display does not display important maintenance/log information or other EML metadata features. Please be sure to view the EML file (a text file that contains XML tags) which is included in the zip archive (click on "Download zip archive") pertaining to each dataset. The EML file name will have the following format: knb-lter-nwt.[3 digit dataset number].[version number].xml. Most web browsers can parse the EML so it's easier to read.

GLASS Land Surface Temperature product (1981-2000): instantaneous LST
<ul> <li>GLASS Land Surface Temperature product (1981-2000): instantaneous LST have been produced from historical NOAA AVHRR data. The LST data were generated by integrating several Split-Window Algorithms with the Random Forest method (RF-SWA). The individual SWAs and the RF-SWA were trained and tested on simulation datasets obtained from globally representative atmospheric profiles. The validation against <em>in-situ</em> LST shows that the GLASS LST product has a precision of 1.18 K.</li> <li>The dataset is organized by year and a sample data is provided in simple.zip</li> <li>Further details can be found in the readme.pdf.</li> </ul>
