Forest Inventory of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Watershed 6 2002, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

Forest inventory surveys were initiated in 1965, repeated in 1977, and repeated at 5 year intervals after that; this data set was collected in summer of 2002. The inventory consists of a total inventory of all trees >=10 cm diameter-at-breast-height (dbh) on the whole of the watershed (13.23 ha), as measured in each of the 208 25 m x 25 m plots. Trees >=2 to <=10 cm dbh were subsampled using a 3 meter wide strip along one edge of each 25 m x 25 m plot. With the addition of tree tags in 2002 on all trees >=10 cm dbh, tracking of individual trees is now possible. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest Watershed 1 Temporal Canopy Leaf Chemistry, 1999 - 2002

Overstory foliage is collected in late summer from calcium-treated forest on watershed 1. Nutrient concentrations in foliage are measured. This allows us to estimate the pool of nutrients in foliage in combination with litterfall estimates of foliage biomass. We can compare foliar chemistry in W1 with that in W6 to quantify calcium treatment effects. Long-term measurements continue with the aim of detecting trends in foliage chemistry over long time scales. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Fine root production and mortality from minirhizotrons at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

This data set reports observations of fine root growth, mortality and lifespan in the mature forest. The lifespan data can be combined with fine root biomass data to estimate fine root production in the forests (Fahey et al. 2005). This data set was from reference plots for a snow manipulation experiment and the results are summarized in Tierney et al. (2001). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Continuous Revegetation Survey Data, Watershed 5, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1984 - 1989

During the first five years after harvest of Watershed 5, detailed measurements of recovering vegetation were conducted on a large set of permanent plots. Results are summarized in Hughes and Fahey (1991) and Pu et al. (1993). Measurements on these plots were discontinued in 1989 and replaced by measurements on a smaller set of larger plots. Those data are not included in this dataset. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (USDA Forest Service): Soil Temperature Measurements, 1959 - 1998

Soil temperature data were collected approximately weekly at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest from 1959 - 1998. Colman temperature-moisture sensors were installed at one location west of weir 4 and replicated (1 and 2) at depths of 3, 8, 15, 30, 46 and 61 cm. Soil resistance was recorded using a manually-operated AC resistance meter then converted to temperature. In 1998 the battery needed to operate the meter to read the sensors was no longer available. No soil temperature data were collected from the last Colman reading in 1998 until the start of a new network collocated with the Colman plots. Two sets of hydroprobes run from a SCAN site (Soil Climate and Analysis Network operated by the NRCS) were placed at the original depths and as close as possible to the original location. Hubbard Brook SCAN data are now available at the NRCS SCAN website from 2002 – present and serve to extend the soil temperature dataset first initiated in 1959 in to the future. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
