Data from: Dynamic measurements of black oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) predation on mussels (Mytilus californianus)

Intertidal zone mussels can face threats from a variety of predatory species during high and low tides, and they must balance the threat of predation against other needs such as feeding and aerobic respiration. Black oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) on the Pacific coast of North America can depend on the mussel Mytilus californianus for a substantial portion of their diet. Observations suggest that oystercatchers tend to focus on mussels beginning to gape their valves during rising tides, following periods of aerial emersion. We present detailed, autonomous field measurements of the dynamics of three such predation events in the rocky intertidal zone. We measured accelerations of up to 4 g imposed on mussels, with handling times of 115 to 290 s required to open the shell and remove the majority of tissue. In each case a single oystercatcher attacked a mussel that had gaped the shell valves slightly wider than its neighbors as the rising tide began to splash the mussel bed, but no other obvious characteristic of the mussels, such as body temperature or orientation, could be linked to the oystercatcher's individual prey choice.

Interactive effects of ZnO nanoparticles and temperature on molecular and cellular stress responses of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis

<p>We investigate the molecular and cellular stress responses of tissues (gills and digestive glands) in the mussels <em>Mytilus edulis&nbsp;</em>exposed for 21 days to either ambient (10 &deg;C in winter and 15 &deg;C in summer) or elevated (by 5 &deg;C) temperature combined with different concentrations (0, 10, 100 &micro;g l<sup>-1</sup>) of ZnO nanoparticles or dissolved zinc. In this data set, we used a biomarker-based approach focusing on oxidative stress indicators (&nbsp;lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyls) and transcription pattern of marker genes in the pathways related to cell survival and proliferation (caspase 3, Bcl-2, p53, p38 and JNK) and inflammation (COX, NF-&kappa;B, and TGF-&beta;) of <em>M. edulis</em>.&nbsp;</p>

Novel insights into habitat suitability for Amazonian freshwater mussels linked with hydraulic and landscape drivers

<p><span>Novel insights into habitat suitability for two Unionida freshwater mussels, <i>Castalia ambigua</i> Lamarck, 1819 (Hyriidae) and <i>Anodontites elongatus </i><span>(Swainson, 1823) (Mycetopodidae)</span><i>,</i> is presented on the basis of hydraulic variables linked with the riverbed in six 500 m reaches in an eastern Amazonian river basin. Within the reaches, there was strong habitat heterogeneity in hydrodynamics and substrate composition. In addition, we investigated stressors based on landscape modification that are associated with declines in mussel density. We measured hydraulic variables for each 500 m reach, and landscape stressors at two spatial scales (subcatchment and riparian buffer forest). W<span>e used </span><span>the</span> <span>R</span><span>andom </span><span>F</span><span>orest algorithm,</span> a tree-based model, to predict the hydraulic variables linked with habitat suitability for mussels, and to predict which landscape stressors were most associated with mussel density declines. Both mussel species were linked with low substrate heterogeneity and greater riverbed stability (low Froude and Reynolds numbers), especially at high flow (low stream power). Different sediment grain size preferences were observed between mussel species: <i>Castalia ambigua</i> was associated with medium sand, and <i>Anodontites elongatus</i> with medium and fine sand. Declines in mussel density were associated with modifications linked to urbanization at small scales (riparian buffer forest), especially with percent of and distance from rural settlements, distance to the nearest street, and road density. In summary, the high<span> variance </span><span>explained </span><span>in both hydraulic and landscape models</span><span> indicated </span><span>high predictive power, </span><span>suggesting that our findings</span> <span>may be extrapolated </span><span>and used as a baseline to test </span><span><span>hypotheses of habitat suitability </span></span><span><span>in other Amazonian rivers</span></span><span><span> for </span></span><i><span>Castalia ambigua</span></i><span><span> and </span></span><i><span>Anodontites elongatus</span></i><span><span>, and also </span></span><span><span>for</span></span><span><span> other </span></span><span><span>freshwater </span></span><span><span>mussel species</span></span><span>. </span>Our results highlight the urgent need for aquatic habitat conservation to maintain sheltered habitats during high flow as well as mitigate the effects of landscape modifications at the riparian buffer scale, both of which are important for maintaining dense mussel populations and habitat quality.</span></p>

Long-term time series of mussel and scallop abundances in the Bay of Seine (Normandy, France).

<p>In Normandy (France), and particularly in the Bay of Seine, the great scallop Pecten maximus and the blue mussel Mytilus edulis are the main bivalve molluscs species harvested by the local fishing fleet. In this area, the scallop stock is one of the most important in Europe and appears to be growing since a few years. Its exploitation actually sustains an important economic activity (with a landed volume&nbsp;of 15.000 tons per year). However, population growth is not monotonous and yearly recruitment of young scallops seems to be very variable. For mussels, a fleet of nearly 40 boats exploited the natural banks in the subtidal area, with a landed volume ranging between 1.000 and 5.000 tons, exceptionally reaching 30.000 tons per year depending of the yearly fluctuations of the juvenile mussels&rsquo; settlement. Since 2014, however, the yearly prospective campaigns have pointed a dramatic decline of the recruitment throughout the area.</p> <p>Long-term data series on bivalve settlement usually show strongly fluctuating patterns, due to the environmental sensitivity of mollusk-recruitment process. While scallop and mussel stocks historically presented strong fluctuations of abundance, yearly monitoring programs were required to estimate annual abundance, and to adjust the fishing effort in line with the available resources. In accordance with stakeholders and fishermen, Ifremer (the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) and the Regional Fisheries Committee conducted these campaigns since 1992 for scallops and 1982 for mussels. Here, we present the dataset synthetizing the results of these campaigns in order to extend the reuse potential of these data. Particularly, database may help to quantify the effects of environmental variations on recruitment of two marine bivalve species and forecast simulations of recruitment under climate change scenario</p> <p>For scallops, a various number of one nautical mile squares were sampled each year in the southern part of the Bay of Seine (approximately south of 49&deg;35 north latitude). This number was determined following the results of the campaigns conducted in the previous years, to ensure the representativeness of the abundance estimators. In each sampling unit, the fisher boat hauled 2 survey dredges with a 2 meters wide aperture. Harvested individuals were then classified by age-class, and numbered. Later, we calculated back an abundance index per age-class and per surface unit covered by the dredges.</p> <p>For mussels, 5 small banks located in the south-western part of the Bay of Seine were prospected each year. Grandcamp bank is approximately located between 1&deg;07&rsquo; W and 0&deg;56&rsquo; W, and 49&deg;26&rsquo; N. and 49&deg;23&rsquo; N. Ravenoville bank boundaries are 1&deg;16&rsquo; W-1&deg;07&rsquo; W, and 49&deg;32&rsquo; N-49&deg;25&rsquo;N. R&eacute;ville bank boundaries are 1&deg;15&rsquo; W and 1&deg;10&rsquo; W, and 49&deg;37&rsquo; N and 49&deg;34&rsquo; N. Moulard bank boundaries are 1&deg;15&rsquo; W and 1&deg;10&rsquo; W, and 49&deg;41&rsquo; N and 49&deg;38&rsquo; N. Barfleur bank boundaries are 1&deg;21&rsquo; W and 1&deg;10&rsquo; W, and 49&deg;48&rsquo; N and 49&deg;40&rsquo; N. During the annual campaigns, chartered fishermen vessels prospected the different banks by dredging, following a sampling design adapted to the mussel distribution and divided by a various number of one mile squares. Each year and for each bank, they realized one haul in the sampling squares located in the periphery of the bank to determine the mussel coverage. Once the boundaries of the bank delimited, the sampling effort was uniformly distributed within the area. In any one haul, the mussels were weighted and a subsample of the harvested individuals were numbered, measured and weighted individually. Later, we estimated the mean individual mass per size-class, and deduced the number of mussel per size-class and per sampling unit. In this case, the abundance index consists in an index of dredging-yield, expressed in kilograms per minute of hauling one dredge. This index was calculated for the commercial-sized mussels (&gt; 40 mm) only, because of the reduced catchability of smaller mussels.</p> <p>The dataset contains 4 columns and 186 rows. Circadian and circatidal rhythms of protein abundance in the California mussel (Mytilus californianus)

<p>Coastal habitats fluctuate with the 12.4 h tidal and 24 h light/dark cycle to predictably alter conditions such as air exposure, temperature, and food availability. Intertidal sessile bivalves exhibit behavioral and physiological adjustments to minimize the challenges of this environment. We investigated a high-resolution time course of the changes in protein abundance in the gill tissue of the intertidal mussel <i>Mytilus californianus</i> in a simulated tidal environment of 12:12 h light:dark cycles and a matching 6:6 h high:low tide cycle within each 12 h period. Approximately 38% of detected proteins showed significant rhythms in their abundances, with diversity in the phases of rhythmic isoforms. The circadian rhythm was dominant in protein abundance changes, particularly with oxidative metabolism. A tidal cycle elicited changes within functional groups, including in cytoskeletal proteins, chaperones, and oxidative stress proteins. In addition to protein abundance changes, we found the possibility for post-translational modifications driving rhythms, including methylation, mitochondrial peptide processing (proteolysis), and acylation. Dynamic changes in the proteome across functional categories demonstrate the importance of the tidal environment in entraining cellular processes, confirming that differential expression studies should not assume a static baseline of cellular conditions in intertidal organisms.</p>

Ocean acidification and predation risk, in isolation and in combination, show strong effects on marine mussels

<p><span>Carbon dioxide-induced ocean acidification are producing a range of new selection pressures on marine calcifying organisms that show phenotypic plasticity in their shell morphology in response to predators. Although there are numerous studies on the effects of ocean acidification and predation risk on marine bivalves in isolation, the understanding concerning their combined effects is still lacking. To bridge this gap, we conducted a long-term mesocosm experiment using mussel populations with different history of predator exposure: crab-experienced and crab-naïve. Mussels were exposed to either lower pH or crab cue and the combination of both these treatments for four months. We demonstrate that both crab-experienced and crab-naïve mussels have heavier, thicker, rounder and, thus, stronger shells in response to crab cues, whereas low pH significantly decreased shell mass, thickness and strength. Mussels with previous experience to crabs showed greater plasticity in response to crab cues than crab-naïve mussels. However, this differential response was eliminated by ocean acidification. Exposure to low pH and crab cue resulted in antagonistic interactions for all traits, except for shell length where the combined effect was additive. However, there was no difference among populations in the interaction type for any of the traits. Our study may provide implications for the management of mussel populations under climate change.</span></p>

Invertebrates, including bivalves, received limited attention even though they make up a significant part of the marine biomass and are very important for higher trophic levels. Behavioural studies are critical to evaluate individual and potentially population-level impact of noise and can be used to compare the effects of different sounds. In the current study, we examined the effect of impulsive sounds with different pulse rates on the valve gape behaviour and phytoplankton clearance rate of blue mussels (<em>Mytilus</em> spp.<em>)</em>. We monitored the mussels&rsquo; valve gape using an electromagnetic valve gape monitor, and their clearance rate using spectrophotometry of phytoplankton densities in the water. We found that the mussels&rsquo; valve gape was positively correlated with their clearance rate, but the sound exposure did not significantly affect the clearance rate or reduce the valve gape of the mussels. They did close their valves upon the onset of a pulse train, but the majority of the individuals recovered to pre-exposure valve gape levels during the exposure. Individuals that were exposed to faster pulse trains returned to their baseline valve gape faster. Data from: Two for the price of one: eDNA metabarcoding reveals temporal and spatial variability of mussel and fish co-distributions in Michigan riverine systems

<p>Freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) are among the world's most endangered taxa, with almost 75% of North American taxa classified as a species of concern, threatened, or endangered. Despite the critical importance of comprehensive distributional data for the conservation of unionids and fishes, these data are often lacking because of the labor and resources associated with traditional survey methods. During their larval stage, unionid mussels use various fish species as obligate hosts, making native fish species vital to unionid persistence and an understanding of host distribution similarly important. Here, we utilized an eDNA metabarcoding approach to evaluate patterns of co-distribution of unionid mussels and fishes along ~362 km of the densely sampled Grand River network as well as the outlets of 19 tributaries along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, USA. We detected a total of 21 mussel and 40 fish taxa, with distinctive composition of both mussel and fish assemblages across tributaries and differences in fish taxa between sampling periods. Notably, we detected more mussel taxa within the Grand River watershed than at the outlets of all 20 rivers combined. Within the Grand River network, two fish taxa (<em>Pylodictus</em> <em>olivaris</em> and <em>Cyprinella</em>) were found more frequently in areas of high mussel diversity, and three fish taxa more frequently in areas of low mussel diversity (<em>Umbra</em>, Leuciscidae, and <em>Etheostoma</em>). There was little difference between eDNA detections of mussels from samples collected in June versus August, but we detected significantly more fish taxa in August compared to June. Taken together, our findings demonstrate the value of eDNA metabarcoding for evaluating co-distribution of ecologically connected taxa. The use of eDNA as a tool for determining distributions of mussels and their obligate hosts may facilitate conservation efforts for these imperiled taxa.</p>

Invertebrates, such as bivalves, have so far received limited attention despite their important role in the marine ecosystem. Several studies have examined the impact of sound on anti-predator behaviour using simulated predators, but studies using live predators are scarce. In the current study, we examined the separate and combined effects of boat sound playback and predator cues from shore crabs (<em>Carcinus maenas</em>) on the behaviour of mussels (<em>Mytilus</em> spp.). We examined the behaviour of the mussels using a valve gape monitor and scored the behaviour from the crabs in one of two types of predator test conditions from video footage to control for effects from potential, sound-induced variation in crab behaviour. We found that mussels closed their valve gape during boat noise and with a crab in their tank, but also that the stimulus combination did not add up to an even smaller valve gape. The sound treatment did not affect the stimulus crabs, but the behaviour of the crabs did affect the valve gape of the mussels. Future research is needed to examine whether these results stand <em>in situ</em> and whether valve closure due to sound have fitness consequences for mussels. The effects on the well-being of individual mussels from anthropogenic noise may be relevant for population dynamics in the context of pressure from other stressors, their role as ecosystem engineers, and in the context of aquaculture.</span></p>

Data from: A comparison of non-destructive visceral swab and tissue biopsy sampling methods for genotyping-by-sequencing in the freshwater mussel Fusconaia askewi

<p>Limiting harm to organisms via genetic sampling is an important consideration for rare species. Nondestructive sampling techniques have been developed to address this issue in freshwater mussels. Two methods, visceral swabbing and tissue biopsies, have proven to be effective for DNA sampling, though it is unclear as to which method is preferable for genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS). Tissue biopsies may cause undue stress and damage to organisms, while visceral swabbing potentially reduces the chance of such harm. Our study compared the efficacy of these two DNA sampling methods for generating GBS data for the Unionid freshwater mussel, Texas Pigtoe (<em>Fusconaia askewi</em>). Our results find both methods generate quality sequence data, though some considerations are in order. Tissue biopsies produced significantly higher DNA concentrations and larger numbers of reads when compared to swabs, though there was no significant association between starting DNA concentration and number of reads generated. Swabbing produced greater sequence depth (more reads per sequence) while tissue biopsies revealed greater coverage across the genome (at lower sequence depth). Patterns of genomic variation as characterized in principal component analyses were similar regardless of the sampling method, suggesting that the less invasive swabbing is a viable option for producing quality GBS data in these organisms.</p>
