Interactive effects of arrival date, territory quality and male polyterritorial behaviour on the mating system of the sedge warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus – a path analysis
<p>Classical models predict that male fitness is based on resources monopolized and invested in reproduction, and/or on individual quality providing offspring with sexually attractive traits or viable genes. However, these factors are frequently correlated, making their relative influence on male fitness difficult to describe and quantify. We analysed the relative influence of the main features of the sedge warbler's (<em>Acrocephalus schoenobaenus</em>) breeding system, i.e. age, arrival date, territory quality, male sexual activity (song and polyterritorial behaviour), on males' mating success, fledging success and local recruitment. Results show that this species' breeding system involves three main paths: (1) earlier-arriving males have higher mating success, regardless of territory quality, (2) the quality of territories pre-empted by earlier males directly influences recruitment, and (3) mating success is influenced by male sexual activity (polyterritorial behaviour), but an additional territory also affects recruitment directly. As arrival date plays a significant role in all the paths, the whole system seems to depend on male quality; although the benefits accruing to male fitness are obtained not only through sexual selection but also through resource monopolization.</p>
Comparative analysis of chloroplast genomes of Sanguisorba species and insights into phylogenetic implications and molecular dating
<pre class="js_message_plain ng-binding"><em>Sanguisorba</em> is a small genus, which consists of about 15 species widely distributed in North America and Eurasia. Previous studies on <em>Sanguisorba</em> are useful for understanding of phylogeny and chloroplast (cp) genome evolution of <em>Sanguisorba</em>. However, the cp genome resources of <em>Sanguisorba</em> are still limited, and the phylogeny and molecular dating for <em>Sanguisorba</em> and its relatives still need further explored. Here, we reported four cp genomes of <em>Sanguisorba</em> and conducted comparative analysis of the four <em>Sanguisorba</em> cp genomes plus five previously published ones. The nine cp genomes of <em>Sanguisorba</em> have typical tetrad quadripartite structure, with a total length of 154 282 to 155 730 bp, and their gene content, gene structure, and gene order are relatively conservative. The analysis of single copy (SC)/inverted repeat (IR) boundaries shows very slight boundary differences in <em>Sanguisorba</em> cp genomes. Eight variation hotspots were screened as excellent candidate markers of <em>Sanguisorba</em>. Phylogenetic analysis indicated <em>Sanguisorba</em> was monophyletic and was a member of tribe Agrimonieae subtribe Sanguisorbinae. Within <em>Sanguisorba</em>, <em>S. filiformis</em> is a sister group of six other taxa in the present sampling. Estimation of the divergence times indicated that subtribes Agrimoniinae and Sanguisorbinae diverged at the transition between the Oligocene and the Miocene, and divergent times of Agrimonieae genera ranged from the late Miocene to the Middle Pleistocene. This study enriches the available cp genome resources of <em>Sanguisorba</em>, and it is of great significance to further study the phylogeny and evolution of <em>Sanguisorba</em> and its relatives.</pre>

Arivurichardich - Name & Date On Wall
Arivurichardich is a remote mid 19 th century croft consisting of a shepherd's cottage and adjoining sheepfank on the slopes of Meall Odhar, in the hills to the N of Callandar. The complex has a significant effect upon the spectacular landscape, visible on the mountainside from far down the valley from which it is approached. Modern farming practises are less likely to use these distant fanks and are therefore becoming more rare. The sheepfank is fairly large, and the walls (ruinous) that enclose the fank and cottage form a rare and reasonably complete example of a remote sheep station. A grade C listed building. This carving is on the N facing gable wall. It reads 1844 John Fisher(?). The cottage is on the Drummond Estates and is used as a private bothy by the Stovie Club. It is kept securely locked. 18th C. Dated Stone Killagule, Co. Galway
This stone was discovered in Killaguile Co. Galway. Located in a woodland, along a boundry wall the stone may have come from an 18th cottage or building. The stone is damaged at the start of the inscription but appears to read ?M 1788 followed by ?? MPC 1784. The later date is added before the eariler carving, and may represent the names of people who used the building. The stone may have been a lintel above a window or door. Griffiths Valuation notes that James E. Jackson held the lands in fee in the 1830s (Lands held 'in fee' were freehold tenures, derived from a grant from the Crown.)  The buildings appear on the 1st Edition of the OS Maps, but not later editions, indicating that they were abadoned during the famine, many of the clusters of houses in the areas have since vanished. Distribution dataset of the 140 Chinese mountain floras and dated phylogenetic tree
<p>We compiled<strong> </strong>checklists of species of angiosperm for 140 Chinese mountain flora from previously published, comprehensive species checklists, white papers, and research papers. From our initial checklists, we excluded all nonnative species, and we reconciled taxonomy to the Leipzig Catalogue of Vascular Plants (LCVP), with infraspecific taxa combined under their respective species. Following taxonomic reconciliation and categorization within higher ranks, our dataset comprised a total of 17,576 species in 2,585 genera belonging to 251 families and 56 orders.</p> <p>In addition, six dated phylogenetic trees by the V.PhyloMaker2 approach are provided.</p> <p> </p>
Selection favors high spread and asymmetry of flower opening dates within plant individuals
<p>Natural selection on traits expressed repeatedly by individuals is usually investigated with a focus on mean values, although within-individual trait distributions often differ also in other aspects, such as their spread and shape. In plants producing multiple flowers during a season, there might not be a single optimal flowering time, but rather an optimal distribution of flower opening dates. This optimal distribution might depend on both resource allocation patterns and interactions with the abiotic and biotic environment.</p> <p>In this study, we quantified mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis of 495 individual flowering schedules (5287 flowers) over three years, and assessed phenotypic selection on these aspects of the within-individual distribution of opening dates in the perennial herb <em>Lathyrus vernus</em>. We also explored how selection on within-individual variation in flowering schedules was related to effects on two fitness components: fruit set and the proportion of seeds escaping pre-dispersal predation.</p> <p>Within-individual variation in phenology was larger than, or at least similar to, among-individual variation in all years. We found phenotypic selection on several aspects of individual flowering schedules. In one year, selection favoured plants with higher variance in opening dates, and this coincided with a higher fruit set in plants with an increased spread of the flowering schedule. In two of the study years, selection favoured a higher asymmetry of the flowering schedule, and plants with more right-skewed distributions had higher fruit set and higher proportions of seeds escaping predation. Both fruit set and seed predation increased with an earlier mean flowering, resulting in no net selection on mean flowering date.</p> <p><em>Synthesis</em>. Our results suggest that phenotypic selection on the spread and shape of flower opening date distributions might be at least as important as selection on the mean flowering date. In a broad sense, this implies that we should consider the entire trait distribution if we aim to understand the evolution of traits that are expressed multiple times within individuals.</p>
A New Model and Dating for the Evolution of Complex Plastids of Red Alga Origin
<p>The zip files includes alignments of protein sequences in fasta format (SequenceAlignments.zip) and their concatenated sets used in our research project (ConcatenatedAlignments.zip). Additionally, we included raw (unaligned) protein sequences in fasta format (RawSequences.zip). In total, we employed 97 amino acid sequences of conserved plastid-encoded proteins, carefully selected from the NCBI reference sequence database (<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/refseq/">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/refseq/</a>), and GenBank (<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank/">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank/</a>), representing 112 organisms. Our dataset included 111 eukaryotes carrying red-alga derived plastids and the closest plastid cyanobacterial relative <i>Gloeomargarita lithophora</i> Alchichica D10. We performed independent alignments of each homologous protein group using a slow and accurate L-INS-i algorithm implemented in MAFFT v7.429 (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/molbev/mst010">https://doi.org/10.1093/molbev/mst010</a>). The resulting multiple sequence alignments were carefully assessed using AliView (<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btu531">http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btu531</a>), and phylogenetically informative sites were selected through trimAl <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btp348">https://doi.org/10.1093/bioinformatics/btp348</a>and ClipKIT (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3001007">https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3001007</a>). The trimmed alignments were concatenated into supermatrices using SequenceMatrix 1.8 (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1096-0031.2010.00329.x">https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1096-0031.2010.00329.x</a>)to generate comprehensive datasets for phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses. We also generated a supermatrix composed of untrimmed alignments.</p>
Extirpated species in Berlin, dates of last detections, habitats, and number of Berlin's inhabitants
<p>Species loss is highly scale-dependent, following the species-area relationship. We analysed spatio-temporal patterns of species' extirpation on a multitaxonomic level using Berlin, the capital city of Germany. Berlin is one of the largest cities in Europe and has experienced a strong urbanisation trend since the late 19th century. We expected species' extirpation to be exceptionally high due to the long history of urbanisation. Analysing regional Red Lists of Threatened Plants, Animals, and Fungi of Berlin (covering 9498 species), we found that 16 % of species were extirpated, a rate 5.9 times higher than at the German scale, and 47.1 times higher than at the European scale. Species' extirpation in Berlin is comparable to that of another German city with a similarly broad taxonomic coverage, but much higher than in regional areas with less human impact. The documentation of species' extirpation started in the 18th century and is well documented for the 19th and 20th centuries. We found an average annual extirpation of 3.6 species in the 19th century, 9.6 species in the 20th century, and the same number of extirpated species as in the 19th century were documented in the 21th century, despite the much shorter time period. Our results showed that species' extirpation is higher at small than on large spatial scales, and might be negatively influenced by urbanisation, with different effects on different taxonomic groups and habitats. Over time, we found that species' extirpation is highest during periods of high human alterations and is negatively affected by the number of people living in the city. But, there is still a lack of data to decouple the size of the area and the human impact of urbanisation. However, cities might be suitable systems for studying species' extirpation processes due to their small scale and human impact.</p>

The locations are uniformly sampled within known counties (FIPS), additional covariates of which are included.
