FAB 1 Forests and Biodiversity Experiment - High density diversity experiment:Soil lipid (P/NLFA) and AMF (spore and sequence) data from selected plots
A forest biodiversity experiment (FAB) focused on trees of our region investigates the consequences of multiple dimensions of tree diversity for soil, food webs, plant communities and ecosystems. FAB is designed to unravel effects of three forms of biological diversity: species richness (SR), functional diversity (FD), and phylogenetic diversity (PD). We define FD as the representation of multiple traits of leaves, roots, seeds, and the whole organism that are correlated with species positions along gradients of resource supply, growth, and decomposition. PD is the representation of evolutionary lineages measured as the genetic distances between species. While PD and FD are often correlated, convergent evolution and adaptive differentiation can decouple them. When functional traits that drive specific ecosystem functions are not phylogenetically conserved, PD and FD may give contrasting predictions. SR, PD, and FD are not independent, and we posit that PD may help explain SR effects, and FD may help explain both PD and SR effects. Thus FAB is designed to examine the separate and combined effects of all three components of diversity for multiple ecosystem functions and to distinguish between ???sampling??? and ???complementarity??? effects of biodiversity. Due to the long lag between planting tree seedlings and determining effects of tree composition and diversity on ecosystem functioning, fewer experiments have been established to elucidate the role of biodiversity in the functioning of forest ecosystems than grassland experiments. FAB will contribute to this gap and is a member of the IDENT and TreeDiv network of forest biodiversity experiments (www.treedivnet.ugent.be). Hypotheses: 1. Fine root biogenic silica in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum) on soil freezing and control plots at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
This dataset presents biogenic silica (BSi) concentrations in sugar maple (Acer saccharum) fine roots collected from a snow manipulation experiment at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (New Hampshire, USA). BSi data are reported as percent dry biomass. The samples were collected from control and treatment plots in April 2009, May 2009, and April through July 2010. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Abundance of trees and seedlings, climatic, and soil variables in 36 20x20 m permanent plots in peri-urban Andean forests of Colombia
<p>The study was conducted on the Eastern Andean Cordillera of Colombia, in remnant forests occurring in the high-plain where Bogotá lies, one of the largest cities in Latin America. The high-plain covers an area of about 185,000 ha at an average altitude of 2600 meters above sea level (m a.s.l.). We selected six study sites, distributed in the Eastern and Western slopes of the mountain range that surrounds the high-plain, which exhibit different climatic and edaphic characteristics. Five of the sites were located in the suburban municipalities of Soacha (So), San Francisco (Sf), Guasca (Gu), Tabio (Ta), and the last one, Torca (To), located in a large forest fragment at the periphery of Bogotá. Sites were selected so that they encompassed both early- and late-successional or old-growth forest patches. <br> Within each site, we established three 20 m x 20 m plots in early-successional forests (E) and three 20 m x 20 m plots in late-successional (L) for a total of 36 permanent plots. Here, we present climatic and soil variables for each plot and also the abundances of all tree, shrub, palm, and tree-fern individuals with DAH> 5 cm included in each plot. For simplicity we refer to these as "trees" (-t). Within each plot, we additionally established four subplots of 2 m x 2 m, where we tagged and measured all seedlings> 5 cm in height and DAH ≤ 1 cm; we also present the abundances of the seedlings (-s).</p> <p>Vouchers were collected for each tree and seedling species or morphospecies and identified with the help of an expert botanist and using the resources of the herbarium of the Bogotá Botanical Garden (JBB). Vouchers specimens were stored at the herbarium of the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute (FMB). Overall, we recorded Vouchers that were not identified to species were assigned a standardized morphospecies and were all included in the analyzes.</p>

High-quality video records from forest sample plots located in Artvin, NE Turkey
<p>Natural forest plots were scanned using a handheld mobile laser scanning device, GeoSLAM ZEB-HORIZON, in Artvin (Northeastern Turkey). The videos uploaded here were recorded by the device's add-on camera, ZEB Cam. The visual interpretation of the 4K videos may be useful for understanding different stand characteristics.</p> <p>In this project, a total of 39 plots were modeled based on 3D point cloud data collected by ZEB-HORIZON. Their stand variables (the number of trees, mean diameter, dominant height, basal area, and stand volume) were calculated successfully. </p>

Open data for assessing habitats degree of conservation at plot level. An example dataset of forest structural attributes in Val d'Agri (Basilicata, Southern Italy)
<p>We provide a georeferenced dataset of vertical and horizontal structure of forest types belonging to 4 habitat types, sensu Council Directive 92/43/EEC. The dataset includes structural indicators commonly linked to old-growth forests in Europe, in particular the amount of standing and lying deadwood. We collected data on 32 plots (24 of 225 m<sup>2</sup>, and 8 of 100 m<sup>2</sup>, according to different forests type) during spring and summer of 2022, in Val d’Agri (Basilicata, Southern Italy). The dataset we provide follows the common national standard for field data collection in forest habitat types, published by ISPRA in 2016 (https://www.isprambiente.gov.it/public_files/direttiva-habitat/Manuale-142-2016.pdf) with the aim to promote a greater homogeneity in assessment of habitat conservation status at Country and biogeographical level, as requested by the Habitats Directive.</p> <p>Data were acquired by using a free Android application (VegApp, (https://vegapp.de/), and standardized field survey forms.</p> <p>The selection of the location of the sample sites were spatially balanced by using the sofware QGis vers. 3.22 (http://qgis.osgeo.org)</p> <p>plots_Table1 shows the characteristics of the sample sites, and information on type of management, when available.</p> <p>plots_Table2 provides the description and the measuring unit of all the attributes included in the dataset at plot level. It includes parameters used for assessing old-growth forests, linking them to the main type forests management, in order to both select indicators useful for assessing the conservation degree of forest habitat types, and identify good practices for nature conservation in these ecosystems.</p> <p>plots_Table3 contains information on living trees and deadwood at plot level.</p> <p>Trees describes the dataset related to single-tree data, and it contains the following fields for all living trees, exceeding 10 cm DBH, occurring in the plots. The nomenclature follows the Italian checklist available at https://dryades.units.it/floritaly/</p> <p>The shapefile "plots" contains the same information included in plots_Table1.</p>

CMS: Forest Aboveground Biomass from FIA Plots across the Conterminous USA, 2009-2019
This dataset provides forest biomass estimates for the conterminous United States based on data from the USDA Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. FIA maintains uniformly measured field plots across the conterminous U.S. This dataset, derived from field survey data from 2009-2019, includes statistical estimates of biomass at the finest scale (64,000-hectare hexagons) allowed by FIA's sample density. Estimates include the mean (and standard error of the mean) biomass for both live and dead trees, calculated using three sets of allometric equations. There is also an estimate of the area of forestland in each hexagon. These data can be useful for assessing the accuracy of remotely sensed biomass estimates.
Aspen Forest Cover by Stratum/Plot (SNF)
The purpose of the Superior National Forest (SNF) study was to improve our understanding of the relationship between remotely sensed observations and important biophysical parameters in the boreal forest. A key element of the experiment was the development of methodologies to measure forest stand characteristics to determine values of importance to both remote sensing and ecology. Parameters studied were biomass, leaf area index, above ground net primary productivity, bark area index and ground coverage by vegetation. Thirty two quaking aspen and thirty one black spruce sites were studied. For the aspen sites, in each plot a visual estimation of the percent coverage of the canopy, subcanopy and understory vegetation was made. The site averages of these coverage estimates are presented in this data set.
