Expanding the Miscanthus market in the UK: Growers in profile and experience, benefits and drawbacks of the bioenergy crop

To achieve net zero greenhouse gas emission by 2050 as set out by the 2019 amendment to the 2008 UK Climate Change Act, a major shift towards renewable energy is needed. This includes the development of new methods along with improving and upscaling existing technologies. One example of new methods in bioenergy is developing new Miscanthus cultivars for electricity generation via thermal power station furnaces. Miscanthus is still relatively new compared to other agriculture practices, so market assessments and improvements are needed to reduce the barriers of entry for prospective growers. This publication provides a profile of UK Miscanthus growers and their businesses, their experiences of benefits and drawbacks of the crop, and what they see as potential barriers to entry for prospective farmers. A survey of current Miscanthus growers in England and Wales was conducted and indicated that most farmers were content with the crop and that its environmental and economic benefits were noted. However, it was evident that with a geographically limited UK market, growers wanted to see a better distribution of biomass processing stations to reduce the ongoing costs of transport. With growing demand for renewables, including bio-energy sources, it was determined important to provide information and support for stable farming operations and to incentivise the adoption of Miscanthus. Such incentives include ongoing development of new cultivars, focussing on traits such as production potential and stressor resilience, and growers indicated preference for an annual planting grant. These developments are predicted to further improve the crop's profit margin, making it a more cost-effective crop for farmers. Sensitively managed Miscanthus also has the potential to contribute to carbon sequestration, soil health and aspects of farmland biodiversity. Incentivising such management in government land-based environmental schemes would offer additional income streams and help to promote environmental positive crop planting.

Dataset: Global market drivers for sustainable cephalopod food systems

1. Aquatic food systems are important contributors to global food security to satisfy an intensifying demand for protein-based diets, but global economic growth threatens marine systems. Cephalopod (octopus, squid, cuttlefish) fisheries can contribute to food security; however their sustainable exploitation requires understanding connections between nature's contributions to people (NCP), food system policies and human wellbeing.

2. Our global literature review methodology examined what is known about cephalopod food systems, value chains and supply chains and associated market drivers. For analysis, we followed the IPBES conceptual framework to build a map of the links between cephalopod market drivers, NCP and good quality of life (GQL). Then we mapped cephalopod food system dynamics onto IPBES (in)direct drivers of change relating to catch, trade and consumption.

3. This research contributes knowledge about key factors relating to cephalopods that can support transitions towards increased food security: the value of new aquatic food species; food safety and authenticity systems; place-based innovations and empowerment of communities; and consumer behaviour, lifestyle and motivations for better health and environmental sustainability along the food value chain. We outline requirements for a sustainable, equitable cephalopod food system policy landscape that values nature's contributions to people, considers UN Sustainable Development Goals and emphasises the role of seven overlapping IPBES (in)direct drivers of change: Economic, Governance, Sociocultural and Socio-psychological, Technological, Direct Exploitation, Natural Processes and Pollution. We present a novel market-based adaptation of the IPBES conceptual framework – our 'cephalopod food system framework', to represent how the cephalopod food system functions and how it can inform processes to improve sustainability and equity of the cephalopod food system.

4. This synthesised knowledge provides the basis for diagnosing opportunities (e.g. high demand for products) and constraints (e.g. lack of data about how supply chain drivers link to cephalopod NCP) to be considered regarding the role of cephalopods in transformations towards a resilient and more diversified seafood production system. This social-ecological systems approach could apply to other wild harvest commodities with implications for diverse marine species and ecosystems and can inform those working to deliver marine and terrestrial food security while preserving biodiversity.

Demonstration of Simulation Tools for Electricity Markets considering Power Flow Analysis

Two novel publicly available web services for electricity market (EM) simulation and study and power flow evaluation and validation are proposed, namely the Electricity Market Service (EMS) and Power Flow Service (PFS). EMS enables the simulation of two auction-based algorithms and the execution of three wholesale EMs. PFS provides the creation and evaluation of electrical grids from the transmission to distribution grids. Combining both services one can simulate EMs from wholesale to local markets and test if the results are compatible with a specific electrical grid. This dataset publishes the input and output data of a case study simulation scenario.

Dataset to Study Flexibility Service Providers' Gaming Potential and its Impact on TSO-DSO Coordinated Markets

We publish the dataset and nomenclature table used to study the Flexibility Service Providers’ Gaming Potential and its Impact on TSO-DSO Coordinated Markets (paper published in the 2023 SEST conference).

The dataset is composed by an interconnected system consisting of the IEEE 14-bus (TN) transmission network connected to two distribution networks: the Matpower systems 69-bus (DN_69), and 141-bus (DN_141). All systems topology and some parameters are based on the corresponding cases in Matpower [1]. Injections and loads of the nodes are adapted to create an anticipated negative imbalance (total load surpassing total generation) in the interconnected system, resolved by upward flexibility. In addition, the lines’ upper limits are adjusted to create anticipated congestion in the networks. The interconnected system is fully represented in "Network.xlsx".
Upward and downward flexibility bids are randomly generated and allocated to the nodes. Their quantities are aligned with the nodes’ base injection/load and their marginal values are in the range [10, 26] euro/MW for downward, and marginal costs in the range [30, 73] euro/MW for upward, totaling 536 bids.

4 bids lists are available in this dataset, to allow the strategic behavior analysis with different levels of liquidity:

- In the list of bids "case 0", all 536 bids are present.

- In the list of bids "case 1", 40% of bids in the transmission list are deleted (distribution bids are the same as in case 0).

- In the list of bids "case 2", 98% of the bids in the distribution bids are deleted (transmission bids are the same as in case 0).

- In the list of bids "case 3", only bids needed to solve distribution systems congestions are kept (all the others are deleted) (transmission bids are the same as in case 0).

Source of the systems' topology:

[1] R. D. Zimmerman, C. E. Murillo-Sanchez, and R. J. Thomas, “Mat-power: Steady-state operations, planning, and analysis tools for power systems research and education,” IEEE Transactions on power systems, vol. 26, no. 1, pp. 12–19, 2010.

Please notice that this dataset does not replace the information provided by Matpower related to the aforementioned systems. It rather uses those systems topology and some of their parameters to build a case study to investigate TSO-DSO coordination market models for the procurement of flexibility. Data for: Does capital account liberalization drive the systemic importance of mainland China stock market? A network perspective

Even though Chinese government has launched a series of capital account liberalization schemes to promote the systemic importance of mainland China stock market, the mainland China market still remains relatively marginal in the global stock markets, that is, China’s capital account liberalization does not seem to work as expected. This paper measures the systemic importance of mainland China stock market based on dynamic tail correlation networks, and further analyzes the impact of China’s capital account liberalization on it. Empirical results manifest that, capital account liberalization indeed contributes to improving the systemic importance of mainland China stock market. Besides, the systemic importance is also significantly and positively affected by economic policy uncertainty and direct investment. More specially, investor sentiment in mainland China stock market has the apparent impact on systemic importance only when extreme events occur.
