Model data created by MANDIFORE using ED2 simulating structure and biomass under harvest legacies and climate change as the Morton Arboretum, IL, USA, 2007-2099"

The data in this archive was used to investigate the long-term impacts of harvest-based management strategies on structure and resistance to climate-induced biomass loss using a process-based ecosystem model and an ensemble of climate change drivers in a midwestern USA hardwood forest. The model used was a modified version of the Ecosystem Demography model version 2.1 (ED2) where trees could be grouped based on plant functional type and size allowing for different management regimes to be simulated. The simulation site was an actively managed mid-continental North American temperate deciduous forest at The Morton Arboretum (TMA) near Chicago, USA. The initial conditions (composition and structure) of the forest simulated were initialized using field survey data from 487, 8.92-m radius plots collected in 2018. Different levels of tree removal based on traditional forestry management techniques for temperate deciduous forests were simulated and evaluated for their effects on forest structure and resistance to drought induced mortality for the period of 2006 to 2100. Model initialization and spin up occurred from 2006-2020 at which point management was simulated for the period of 2020-2024 before running without management for 2024 to 2100. Fourteen CMIP5 GCMs were used for meteorological drivers for 2006 to 2100 for both RCP4.5 and RCP 8.5 warming scenarios. CO2 concentration was held constant at 380 ppm over the simulation period. Four management regimes were simulated for each of these GCM-RCP pairings leading to a total of 112 distinct model runs. The four management regimes were group selection, shelterwood, understory thinning and an additional no management scenario served as a control. Data in this archived is separated into the 112 distinct model runs.

Community Land Model version 4.5 (CLM4.5) simulations of water, energy, and carbon fluxes for Saddle vegetation communities, 2008 - 2013

Single point simulations of CLM4.5 that include (1) forcing data that were input to the model and subsequent (2) model output for simulations that approximate conditions in fellfield, dry meadow, moist meadow, wet meadow, and snowbed vegetation communities. Forcing data were generated with observed atmospheric conditions from Tvan, Saddle precipitation, and incoming shortwave radiation measured from the AmeriFlux tower site (US-NR1) from 2008-2013. Wintertime precipitation inputs were modified to approximate average snow depth for each vegetation community observed across the Saddle grid. Land models, like CLM, provide a cohesive framework to investigate biogeophysical and biogeochemical effects of environmental change on ecosystem processes. We used CLM4.5 to investigate if a global-scale model can represent local-scale patterns of water, energy, and carbon fluxes in a heterogeneous mountain environment. Specifically, we were interested in generating testable projections of potential ecosystem responses to climate change. Model output includes half-hourly data on fluxes of energy, water, and carbon, as well as vegetation carbon stocks and edaphic conditions. We also conducted sensitivity analyses to look at ecosystem responses to modifications intended to extend growing season length by decreasing snow albedo and warming air temperatures (black sand and M-A warm, respectively). Information on the variables, units, and data are included as attributed in the network Common Data Form (NetCDF) files for this dataset. For users unfamiliar with using NetCDF files, we have included R scripts that write (forcing data) and read (model output) .nc files include in this data archive. More information about NetCDF files is available at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/index.html.

Simulation data of barrier-shrub interactions from the Barrier3D model

Barrier3D (version 1.0) simulation results of shrub expansion and barrier migration behavior and morphology across a range of input conditions. Simulations vary by the presence or absence of shrubs, the characteristic dune growth rate (0.3-0.9 yr-1), relative sea-level rise rate (3-15 mm/yr), the maximum flow reduction coefficient (0.05-0.35), and the width of initial barrier morphology. Each row in the spreadsheet represents a unique model simulation, and each simulation belongs to one of two different experiments: 1) Barrier_evolution, which is designed to assess the ways in which shrubs alter barrier morphology and the rate and style of barrier retreat by running simulations with and without shrubs across broad ranges of relative sea-level rise rates and dune growth rates; and 2) Shrub_expansion, which explores the ways in which barrier morphologic evolution influences the rate and pattern of shrub expansion. To account for storm stochasticity in the model, each unique combination of parameter values was simulated 100 times. Simulations run for 1,000 model years for the Barrier_evolution experiment, and 150 years for the Shrub_expansion experiment, or until the barrier drowns. The location of the initial cluster of shrub establishment is randomly determined in the Barrier_evolution experiment, but is constrained to the first 100 m (2%) alongshore in the Shrub_expansion experiment. Results from the two experiments are contained in two different files: barrier_island_evolution.csv and shrub_expansion.csv. A table of parameter values, definitions, and sources for the shrub module used in the experiments is given in the file: parameter_values_sources.csv
