High-frequency water quality data for three urban streams in Boston, MA (USA), 2021-2022

This dataset contains high-frequency water quality data for three urban stream locations in the great Boston, Massachusetts metropolitan area. Multiparameter sondes with sensors to measure temperature, pH, specific conductivity, optical dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and optical brighteners (OB) were deployed from 23 November 2021 to 20 December 2022. Data were collected at 15-minute intervals.

This dataset contains dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics from surface water samples collected at 100 urban stream locations in the greater Boston, Massachusetts metropolitan area. Samples were collected four times (September 2021, November 2021, April 2022, and July 2022) to capture spatial and seasonal variation in DOM characteristics. Fluorescent optical properties were measured on filtered water samples to understand the chemical composition of DOM. Excitation-Emission Matrices (EEMs) were measured using a Horiba Aqualog spectrometer. DOM characteristics were quantified using both standard fluorescence and absorbance metrics as well as through parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. These data were collected as part of the Carbon in Urban Rivers Biogeochemistry (CURB) Project. Stable isotope and conservative tracer data used to estimate uptake of stream water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) through a whole-stream addition of a ¹³C-DOC tracer coupled with laboratory measurements of bioavailability of the tracer and stream water DOC using lability profiling with bioreactors

We performed a whole-stream addition of a ¹³C-DOC tracer and made laboratory measurements of the biological availability of the tracer as well as stream water DOC. The study was performed in October 2002 in a 1.27 km stretch of the third-order White Clay Creek in southeastern Pennsylvania. The tracer was prepared as a cold-water leachate of ¹³C-labeled tulip poplar saplings and it was added to the stream along with sodium bromide, a conservative tracer, over a 2-h period. Stream water samples were collected at 8 downstream stations over an 8-h period, filtered, and analyzed for concentrations of bromide and DOC. DOC was measured by Pt-catalyzed, persulfate oxidation, Br- was analyzed by ion chromatography, and C isotope samples were rotary evaporated, acidified, lyophilized, combusted, and the CO₂ analyzed with an elemental analyzer interfaced with an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Lability profiling of the ¹³C-DOC tracer and stream water DOC were performed with a series of plug-flow bioreactors of increasing empty-bed contact times with the concentration of biodegradable DOC operationally defined as the difference between the DOC concentrations in the influent and effluent waters of the bioreactors. The bioreactor measurements were performed 2 days after the whole-stream release. Data were analyzed to estimate the uptake of stream water DOC associated with labile and semi-labile fraction of biodegradable DOC. Stream Metabolism in Marsh Creek, Idaho, USA 2016-2017

Most research on stream metabolism uses a single reach to characterize a stream. We aimed to characterize variation in stream metabolism rates and the controls on metabolism along a 75-km agricultural stream. We continuously measured dissolved oxygen, discharge, conductivity, temperature, light, and turbidity using a variety of sensors deployed at 6 locations along Marsh Creek, a stream in southeastern Idaho. Monthly grab samples were collected for water chemistry throughout the study period, and aquatic vegetation was surveyed from May through September. Data were collected from October 2016 through October 2017.

Stream network from 1997 survey and 2008 LiDAR flight, Andrews Experimental Forest

HJ Andrews stream network from 1994 base prepared from Lienkaemper's 1976 stream survey field data and contours generated from GSC Digital Elevation Model (DEM) maps, and generated from 2008 LiDAR 1 meter bare earth DEM. The 1994 base matches the 30 and 10 meter DEMs and the 2008 LiDAR version matches the LiDAR base layers. Stream order was added to hf01302.

Stream, hyporheic, and ground water chemistry of McRae Creek in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1989 to 1992

Measurements of nitrogen concentrations from grab samples collected from McRae Ck, and from a network of shallow wells located adjacent to the stream. All samples were analyzed for NO3 and NH4. Some samples include additional data such as DON and Total N, and sometimes temperature and dissolved oxygen concentrations were measured at the time the water samples were collected for analysis. Data were collected from September 1989 to September 1992 on an irregular basis to sample both baseflow periods and storm events across seasons of the year. Water samples were collected from the stream as grab samples; samples from shallow wells were pumped into a small flask using a vacuum pump and then transferred into a sample bottle.

Dynamics of large wood in streams: Tagged log inventory, Mack Creek, Andrews Experimental Forest, 1985 to 2008

Although many studies have identified the characteristics of wood stored in streams, few have attempted to measure the long-term dynamics of large wood. From 1982-1985, we developed a long-term study of input, storage, decomposition, and redistribution of large wood in Mack Creek. Each year from 1985 to the present, we have surveyed a 1.1 km section of this stream. This annual survey has allowed us to quantify the standing stocks and characteristics of large wood within the stream and floodplain of an old-growth forest and an older (ca. 1963) clear-cut. In addition, these data allow us to measure rates of input, fragmentation and movement.
